Billy Sid Tate, Sr.
Billy Sid Tate, Sr., 68, of Sharon died Thursday, June 26 at
Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral services
were held Friday, June 27 at Pisgah Methodist Church. Burial
followed in the Pisgah Cemetery.
Mr. Tate was born in Rutherford to the late James W. and
Margaret Halliburton Tate. He was a member of the Pisgah
Methodist Church and a retired laborer from World Color.
He is survived by his wife, Loretta Ann Watts Tate of Sharon;
one son, Billy Tate, Jr. of Sharon; and one grandchild,
William Daniel Tate of Sharon.
He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Daniel Tate and
one brother, James Tate.
Carolyn Rae Smith
Carolyn Rae Smith, 69, of Martin died Saturday, June 28 at
Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. A memorial service will be
held Thursday, July 3 at Eastside Cemetery in Nashville at
11:00 a.m. Bro. Nathaniel Holmes will officiate.
Mrs. Smith was born January 24, 1939 in Gibbon, Nebraska to
the late Arnold Ray McNurlin and Ethel Irene Carpenter. She
was employed with the University of Tennessee at Martin as
an administrative assistant in the Department of Student
Affairs.
She is survived by three sons: Gregory Owen (Becky) Smith of
Brunswick, Georgia, Robert Allen (Sherry) Smith of Lima,
Ohio and Kenneth Rae Smith of Waverly; one brother, Stanley
Leu Edwards of Jackson; one sister, Sharon Edminston of
Loveland, Colorado; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sidney
Smith.
Memorials may be sent to the Patient Activity Fund and
VanAyer Manor Nursing Home.
Charles Ray Hunt
Charles Ray Hunt, 45, of Lowell, Indiana died Wednesday, June
25 at his workplace in Merrillville, Indiana. Funeral
services were held Sunday, June 29 at Gallimore Funeral
Home. Burial followed in the Hopewell Cemetery. Mike Stigall
and Darren Wilson officiated.
Mr. Hunt was born September 30, 1962 in Chicago, Illinois to
the late Raybon (Sonny) Hunt and Barbara (Holland) Hunt, who
survives. He was a machinist.
He is survived by his mother; one son, Brandon Hunt of
Schaumburg, Illinois; two daughters, Megan Rae Hunt and
Brittany Ann Hunt, both of Schaumburg, Illinois; one
brother, Kevin Hunt of Crown Point, Illinois; and three
sisters: Rhonda Foss of Romeoville, Illinois, Donna Stigall
of Martin, and Lisa Reiss of Elgin, Illinois.
Lavada May Prather
Lavada May Prather, 79, of McKenzie, died Monday, June 23,
2008, at Henry County Medical Center in Paris. Funeral
services were Thursday, June 26, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at
McKenzie Funeral Home with Bro. Richard Allen officiating.
Burial followed in Caledonia Cemetery near McKenzie.
Mrs. Prather was born January 13, 1929 in Atwood to the late
Felix and Ervie Gibson Smith. She was a retired Milan
Arsenal Ammunition Plant employee. Besides her parents, she
was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert
Laurence Prather; and one daughter, Jana Elizabeth Hodge.
Survivors include: four sons, Robert S. Prather of Dresden,
Stephen E. Prather, Terry D. Prather, and Jerry Prather, all
of McKenzie; her daughter's three daughters, Amanda, April
and Nina, all of McKenzie; two sisters, Addie Gallimore and
Martha Merrill, both of Dresden; seven grandchildren; and
six great-grandchildren.
George Emmett Tharp
George Emmett Tharp, 73, of Greenfield died Thursday, June 26
at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral services
were held on Saturday, June 28 at Williams Funeral Home.
Burial followed in the Highland Cemetery. Keith Pence
officiated.
Mr. Tharp was born January 11, 1935 in Kenton to the late
Hollis and Florine Elkins Tharp. He served in the U.S. Air
Force and was employed as truck driver.
He is survived by one nephew, Johnny Tharp of Greenfield.
Paul J. Curry
Paul J. Curry, 82, of Greenfield died
Wednesday, June 25. Funeral services were held Sunday, June
29 at Williams Funeral Home with burial following in the
Peace Chapel Cemetery in Scotts Hill.
Mr. Curry was born in 1926 in Decatur County to the late
Herbert and Ozzie Curry. He owned and operated a lumber shed
business and a real estate business.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Scates Curry; three
daughters: Elowese Curry Adkisson, Martha Curry Gordon, and
Trina Gail Pullam; three sons: Ronnie Curry, Tony Curry, and
Michael Scates; four sisters: Nema Curry Clenney, Helen
Clenney, Velma Curry and Marcella Curry Brown; seven
grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and three
step-grandchildren.
Roy (Rabbit) Windham
Roy (Rabbit) Windham, 81, of Martin,
formerly of Kemper County, Mississippi died Wednesday, June
25 at his home in Martin. Funeral services will be held
Tuesday, July 1 at 2:00 p.m. at the Martin Church of Christ.
Burial will follow in the Parham Cemetery in Martin. Bro.
James Mack will be officiating.
Mr. Windham was born October 15, 1927 in Mississippi to the
late Cameron Wesley and Ruth Windham. He was a retired
employee of Reelfoot Packing Company in Union City.
He is survived by his wife, Leora Windham of Martin; seven
daughters: Jewelene Edwards of Woodbridge, Virginia,
Ernestine (Vander) Scott of Martin, Nellie Rae (Gallian)
Fulton of Savannah, Loris (Charles) Askew of Lansing,
Michigan, Rita (Rodney) Royster of Nashville, Shirley (Tony)
Brock of Martin, Ruby (Michael) Miller of Dale City,
Virginia; two sons, Lee Roy (Doris) Windham of Lansing,
Michigan and Roy Lee Windham of Martin; thirty-nine
grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren, and two
great, great grandchildren; one brother, Guydell Windham of
Martin; a sister, Thelma; two sister-in-laws, Ollie Bell
White of Martin and Catherine Reed of Skuqualak,
Mississippi.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Johnnie M. McGraw
Windham; a daughter, Joeline Shane; a brother, Curtin and a
sister, Minnie.
Shirley Mae Sanders Copeland
Shirley Mae Sanders Copeland, 70, of Dresden, died Monday,
June 23, 2008, at her home. Funeral services for Mrs.
Copeland were held Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at
Beech Springs Baptist Church in Gleason. Burial followed in
Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Bro. Terry Griffin, Bro. Bob
Copeland, and Bro. James H. Hazlewood officiated the
services.
Mrs. Copeland was a housewife and a member of Beech Springs
Baptist Church. She was a native of Henderson County and the
daughter of the late Robert M. and Erleene Darby Sanders.
Mrs. Copeland is survived by her husband, Bro. Bob Copeland
of Dresden; three daughters, Susan Collins of Dresden,
Sabrina Panchikal of Memphis, and Freddie Ward of
Palmersville; two sisters, Jimmie Gail Parham of Dresden,
and Emzy Jean Lofton of Dresden; five grandchildren; and
four great-grandchildren.
Stewart Porter
Stewart Porter, 86, of Alma, Arkansas, died Wednesday, June
25, 2008, in a local nursing home. Funeral services for Mr.
Porter were held Saturday, June 28, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at
Ocker Chapel of Alma with burial with military honors in
Dyer Cemetery in Dyer, Arkansas.
Mr. Porter was a member of Dyer United Methodist Church. He
was a U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II flying 31
missions over Germany and earning the Purple Heart, Silver
Star Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross as well as many
others. He was a retired USDA Food Inspector for 30 years.
Mr. Porter was born August 12, 1921 in Dyer, Arkansas. He
was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Lea Roberts
Porter; his parents; and several brothers and sisters.
Mr. Porter is survived by his wife, Betty Porter (formerly of
Greenfield); two daughters, Donna E. Kendrick of Dyer,
Arkansas, and Cheryle A. Costner of Van Buren, Arkansas; a
stepdaughter, Patricia L. Stegall of Greenfield; a stepson,
Charles H. Stegall of Gleason; four grandchildren; one
step-grandchild; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Walter R. Herndon
Walter R. Herndon, 81, of Stone Mountain,
Georgia died Wednesday, June 25. There will be a memorial
service at 11:30 a.m., June 30 at the Tennessee Veterans
Cemetery in Knoxville. Visitation for this service will be
from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on June 29 at the Lake Hills
Presbyterian Church in Knoxville.
Another memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at St.
Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church in Stone Mountain on
July 5 with visitation being on July 4 from 5:00 p.m. until
7:00 p.m. at the church.
Mr. Herndon was born in Birmingham, Alabama and served in the
U.S. Navy before completing his Ph.D. degree at Vanderbilt.
He taught at Middle Tennessee State University and the
University of Alabama. He was a professor and head of the
botany department of the University of Tennessee at
Knoxville. While at Knoxville he served in college and
university administrative roles until 1984, when he resumed
teaching in the botany department until 1994.
He is survived by his wife, Faye Borthick; two daughters,
Martha Herndon of Martin and Susan Herndon of Knoxville; two
sons, Stephen (Beth) Herndon of Jupiter, Florida and Thomas
(Lora) Herndon of Knoxville; one brother, Buford Herndon and
one sister, Eleanor Herndon, both of Birmingham, Alabama.
