Betty Lou McKenzie
Betty Lou McKenzie, 82, of Springville, Tennessee, died
Tuesday, January 1, 2008, at Jackson-Madison County General
Hospital. Funeral services for Mrs. McKenzie were held
Saturday, January 5, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at Stockdale-Malin
Chapel in Big Sandy. Burial followed in McRae Chapel
Cemetery.
Mrs. McKenzie was a retired machine operator. She was
born February 6, 1925 in West Lebanon, Indiana to the late
Forrest Owens and Irene Shaughnessy Owens. In addition to
her parents, Mrs. McKenzie was also preceded in death by her
first husband, Marvin Watson; a sister; and three brothers.
Mrs. McKenzie is survived by her husband, Wilton
McKenzie; five daughters, Faye Warren (Robert) of McKenzie,
Barbara Ward of Mansfield, Cheryl Tillman (J.R.) of Gleason,
Diana Jackson (Rick) of Paris, and Karen Layton of
Indianapolis, Indiana; five sons, Richard Watson (Mary Lou)
of Mansfield, Marvin Watson (Betty) of McKenzie, Ronnie
Watson of McKenzie, James Watson (Kathy) of Dresden, and
Mike Watson of McKenzie; a sister, Doris Groff (Rudy) of
West Lebanon, Indiana; a brother, Herman Owens (Mary Jane)
of West Lebanon, Indiana; a sister-in-law, Freida Owens of
West Lebanon, Indiana; thirty grandchildren; forty-two
great-grandchildren; forty-six great-great-grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews.
Comple Q. "Jim" Jennings
Comple Q. "Jim" Jennings, 72, of Dresden, died
Wednesday, January 2, 2008, at Weakley County Rehab and
Nursing Center in Dresden. Memorial services for Mr.
Jennings were held Monday, January 7, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at
Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Bro. Nathan Horton
officiated the services.
Mr. Jennings was a riverboat engineer for Patton Tulley.
He was a native of Pawluska, Oklahoma and the son of the
late James and Thelma Richardson Jennings. In addition to
his parents, Mr. Jennings was also preceded in death by two
sons, James Jennings and Jose Jennings.
Mr. Jennings is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sharon
Jennings of Dresden; two daughters, Terri Jennings of
Jackson, and Sarah Grinder of Alabama; a sister, Vera Vigil
of Colorado; and four grandchildren.
Donny Lewis Garner
Donny Lewis Garner, 67, of Dresden, died Wednesday,
January 2, 2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin.
Funeral services for Mr. Garner were held Saturday, January
5, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in
Dresden. Burial followed in Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Bro.
Ricky Phillips officiated the services.
Mr. Garner was a factory employee for Haldex
Corporation and a member of Martin Church of Christ. He was
also an antique collector. Mr. Garner was born September 24,
1940 in Weakley County to the late Fonzo Thomas and Leslie
Eugene Insco Garner.
Mr. Garner is survived by his wife, Mrs. Judy Carol
Webb Garner of Dresden; a daughter, Danta (Tommy) Erwin of
Martin; a sister, Shirley (Tommy) Babb of Martin; two
brothers, Earl Garner of Dresden, and Gerald (Pat) Garner of
Union City; and one grandson, Payton Erwin of Martin.
Doris Marjorie "Marge" (Ash) Kean
Doris Marjorie "Marge" (Ash) Kean, 73, of Union City,
died Thursday, January 3, 2008, at her home. Services for
Mrs. Kean were held Sunday, January 6, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at
Calvary Baptist Church in Union City. Burial followed in
Mount Pelia Cemetery. The Rev. Melvin Poe officiated the
services.
Mrs. Kean was born January 21, 1934 on a farm in
Sumner, Illinois, the daughter of the late William Vernie
and Bessie Dee (Eaton) Heath Ash. She had lived in Chicago
and Vincennes, Indiana before moving to Dresden and had then
lived at Rives, where she attended Mount Pelia Baptist
Church. From 1976-1994, she was a member of Union City
Baptist Temple, where she was a Sunday school teacher, an
AWANA's leader, the puppet ministry coordinator and an
active volunteer in the Junior Church ministry. At the time
of her death, she was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist
Church. Mrs. Kean was also a Stanley Home product dealer. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Kean was also preceded in
death by her husband, Charles Robert Kean; three brothers,
Lloyd Ash, Durward Ash, and Dale Ash; and four sisters,
Margaret Ash, Annabelle Qualkinbush, Wilna Lockhart Cashmore,
and June Puckett.
Mrs. Kean is survived by her son and daughter-in-law,
Robert L. and Betty L. Kean of Union City; her daughter and
son-in-law, Bessie R. and John V. Nicks of Union City; four
grandsons and their wives, Robert Wayne and Shina Kean of
Grand Junction, Colorado, Shawn Gregory Kean of Virginia
Beach, Virginia, Christopher Brian and Sheila Nicks of
Murfreesboro and Jonathan Randall Nicks of Union City; her
granddaughter, Marjorie Puanani "Ann" Nicks of Union City;
two great-grandsons, Kody R. Kean of Grand Junction,
Colorado, and Riley C. Kean of Jacksonville, Florida; two
great-granddaughters, Jenifer L. Nicks and Michelle Nicks,
both of Murfreesboro; two brothers, Samuel Bernard Ash of
Sumner and Charles Eaton Ash of Albion, Illinois; her
sister, Virginia Faye (Ash) Evans of Bridgeport, Illinois,
and several nieces and nephews.
Dulcie P. Bates
Dulcie P. Bates, 85, of Greenfield, died Thursday,
January 3, 2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin.
Funeral services for Ms. Bates were held Saturday, January
5, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Williams Funeral Home Chapel in
Greenfield. Burial followed in Meridian Cemetery in
Greenfield. Joe Williamson and Mark Lynch officiated the
services.
Ms. Bates was a housewife and attended New Prospect
Baptist Church. She was born January 7, 1922 in Greenfield
to the late Bunk Parrish and Millie Rose.
Ms. Bates is survived by two sons, Ronnie Bates of
Gleason, and Stanley Bates of Nashville; two sisters, Rose
Williams of Greenfield, and Edith Westmoreland of Bradford;
five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Elvis L. Dick
Elvis L. Dick, 83, of Martin, died Friday, January 4,
2008, at Huntingdon Health and Rehab Center. Funeral
services for Mr. Dick were held Monday, January 7, 2008, at
11:00 a.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin. Burial followed
in East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Steve Blake officiated
the services.
Mr. Dick was a retired farmer and a Baptist by faith.
He was born May 29, 1924 in Hazel, Kentucky to the late Fred
Dick and Irene Hudson Dick.
Mr. Dick is survived by his wife, Mrs. Willease Price
Dick of Martin; a son, Joe Dick of Mississippi; a daughter,
Patricia Stauffer of Mesa, Arizona; a sister, Mildred Mardis
of Aurora, Kentucky; three grandchildren, Kathryn Dick, Ryan
Stauffer, and Michelle Stauffer; and one great-grandchild,
Joseph Stauffer.
Elwanda Wade McMinn
Elwanda Wade McMinn, 80, of Martin, died Thursday,
December 27, 2007, at Regional Medical Center. Funeral
services for Mrs. McMinn were held Sunday, December 30,
2007, at 2:00 p.m. at New Home Baptist Church. Burial
followed in Cate Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Scott Chadwick
officiated the services.
Mrs. McMinn was a retired supervisor at Martin
Manufacturing and a member of New Home Baptist Church. She
was a graduate of Martin High School and the Valedictorian
of the Class of 1946. Mrs. McMinn was born November 10, 1927
in Obion County to the late Jimmy Wade and Lula Key Wade. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. McMinn was also preceded in
death by her husband, Hubert H. McMinn; and two brothers,
Dalton Wade and Bill Wade.
Mrs. McMinn is survived by two sons, Larry McMinn of
Martin, and Phillip McMinn of Martin; a daughter, Patsy
Leonard of Martin; a brother, Joe G. Wade of Martin; five
grandchildren, Jennifer Leonard Morris, Jim Leonard, Shane
McMinn, Lacey McMinn Rush, and Brandon McMinn; and four
great-grandchildren.
George Dean Porch
George Dean Porch, 72, of Dresden, died Thursday,
December 27, 2007, in Chicago, Illinois. Graveside services
for Mr. Porch were held Monday, December 31, 2007, at 11:00
a.m. at Lebanon Cemetery in Dresden. Bro. Shannon Seaton
officiated the services.
Mr. Porch was an electronic technician in Audio
Communications. He was born August 14, 1935 in Weakley
County to the late Clyde D. and Flossie Jackson Porch. In
addition to his parents, Mr. Porch was also preceded in
death by a sister, Ila Fay Porch; and a brother, John Porch.
Mr. Porch is survived by a niece, Ann Polakoff of
Woodridge, Illinois.
Harold Lee Moore
Harold Lee Moore, 39, of Martin, died Wednesday,
December 26, 2007, at Volunteer Community Hospital in
Martin. Graveside services for Mr. Moore were held Friday,
December 28, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at East Side Cemetery in
Martin. Rev. Sam Baker officiated the services.
Mr. Moore was employed at Wade's Furniture Company. He
was born October 31, 1968 in Carroll County to the late
Junior Lee Moore and Gladys Marie Ciscell Moore.
Mr. Moore is survived by his wife, Mrs. Michelle
Harelson Moore of Martin; a son, Nathan Lee Moore of Martin;
a daughter, Katilyn Moore of Martin; and a sister, Barbara
Stockdale of Martin.
James William Bruce
James William Bruce, 67, of Gleason, died Wednesday,
January 2, 2008, at Jackson Madison County Hospital. Mr.
Bruce was buried at Oddfellows Cemetery in Madisonville,
Kentucky.
Mr. Bruce was a trucker for Delta Plastic. He was born
December 10, 1940 in Madisonville, Kentucky to the late
Richard Bruce and Anna Mae Johnson.
Mr. Bruce is survived by three sons, James W. Bruce,
Jr. of Sharon, William Bruce of Evansville, Indiana, and
Jimmy Bruce of Cadiz, Kentucky; two daughters, Gloria Goode
of Gleason, and Anna Williams of Evansville, Indiana; and
three sisters, Janon Walker of Evansville, Indiana, Sue
Taylor of New Burge, Indiana, and Anna Wigton.
Lorene Harvey Morehead
Lorene Harvey Morehead, 90, of Paris, died Thursday,
December 27, 2007, at Henry County Medical Center in Paris.
Funeral services for Mrs. Morehead were held Sunday,
December 30, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at McEvoy Funeral Home
Chapel with Bro. Jerry Massey officiating. Burial followed
in Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Morehead was a member of the First Baptist Church.
She was the former owner and operator of Kay's Steakhouse,
formerly in Paris, for 10 years and was the former manager
of Day's Inn for 4 years in St. Augustine, Florida. She was
born May 16, 1917 in Gleason to the late W.D. Harvey and
Lela Hodges Harvey Stallcup. In addition to her parents,
Mrs. Morehead was also preceded in death by her stepfather,
Jack Stallcup; her husband, whom she married June 24, 1939,
E.J. Morehead; a sister, Virginia Mitchell; a brother,
Woodrow Harvey; several stepbrothers and stepsisters, and
special friend, Leata Wynn.
Mrs. Morehead is survived by two nephews, Gary Harvey
of Costa Rica, and Jeff Mitchell of Lansing, Michigan; a
niece, Linda Schafer of Martin; special friend, Eloise
Griffin of Paris; and cousins, Adell Babyat of Dresden,
James Harvey of Missouri, David Harvey of Missouri, and
Carla Jo Wills of Missouri.
Mary Relma Prince
Mary Relma Prince, 99, of McKenzie, died Monday,
January 7, 2008, at McKenzie Healthcare. Funeral services
for Mrs. Prince will be held Thursday, January 10, 2008, at
11:00 a.m. at LeDon Chapel of Ridgeway Funeral Home. Burial
will follow in Little Zion Cemetery in Palmersville. Dr. Joe
Eaton and Claude Miller Prince will officiate the services.
Mrs. Prince was a homemaker who farmed with her husband
for many years. She was born September 13, 1908 in Cottage
Grove to the late George William "Bill" Parrish and Sarah
Elizabeth Henderson Parrish. In addition to her parents,
Mrs. Prince was also preceded in death by her husband, whom
she married April 11, 1925, Carl G. Prince; and two
brothers, H.B. Parrish and Graden Parrish.
Mrs. Prince is survived by two daughters, Betty Barker
Berry of Paris, and Mary B. Glasgow of Huntsville, Alabama;
two sons, Claude Miller (Ann) Prince of McKenzie, and Donald
W. (Anita) Prince of Columbia, Tennessee; ten grandchildren;
seventeen great-grandchildren; and ten
great-great-grandchildren.
Roy M. Pentecost
Roy M. Pentecost, 84, of Dresden, died Friday, December
21, 2007, at Dallas V.A. Medical Center. Graveside services
for Mr. Pentecost were held Saturday, December 29, 2007, at
11:00 a.m. at Palmersville Cemetery. Rev. Kieth Dublin
officiated the services.
Mr. Pentecost was a member of the Palmersville Baptist
Church and was a veteran of the United States Navy serving
in World War II. He was born October 23, 1923 in Weakley
County to the late Clyde Casey Pentecost and Zela Belle
(Biggs) Pentecost. In addition to his parents, Mr. Pentecost
was also preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Howell and
Jeanette Wallace; and a brother, Clyde Pentecost, Jr.
Mr. Pentecost is survived by a sister, Dorothy Brundige
of Addison, Texas.
Royal Edward "Eddie" Maiden, III
Royal Edward "Eddie" Maiden, III, died Saturday,
December 29, 2007, at his home in Apple Valley, California.
He was born September 13, 1931, in Dresden, the oldest child
of Royal Edward Maiden, Jr. and Vinton English Maiden. Mr.
Maiden served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1966, serving in
both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After retiring from
the Army, Eddie served the Hilton Hawaiian Village as
Director of Security. After his second retirement, the
family moved to Apple Valley, California.
Mr. Maiden is survived by his wife, Taeko "Betty"
Maiden, whom he married on February 14, 1955, in Yokohama,
Japan; two sons, Edward Dean Maiden and Mark Anthony Maiden,
his wife, Marie DiGiacomo Maiden; and one grandchild,
Tinamarie Maiden, the daughter of Edward Dean Maiden and
Rhonda Howze. He also leaves two sisters, India Maiden Hoogs
of Tucson, Arizona, and Melanie Maiden Thomason of Marana,
Arizona; their brother, Thomas Harrison Maiden, died in
1992.
Mr. Maiden was a grandson of Judge Royal Edward Maiden,
Sr., and Effie Meek Maiden, the author of "Home in the
Wilderness," a family story detailing Weakley County history
from 1848-1878 published in 2003. Mr. Maiden was a
grand-nephew of Paul Meek, longtime Chancellor of the
University of Tennessee at Martin. His cousins include J.R.
Meek of Midway Farms, Suzanne Meek Powers of Union City,
Marilyn Brooks Hammonds of Kingsport, and Anne Meek of
Norfolk, Virginia.
A memorial service was held January 3, 2008, at Calvary
Chapel, Hesperia, California with interment at the Veterans'
Arlington Memorial Cemetery in Riverside, California.
Ruth Gean Williams
Ruth Gean Williams, 88, of Martin, died Sunday, January
6, 2008, at Martin Health Care. Funeral services for Mrs.
Williams were held Wednesday, January 9, 2008, at 11:00 a.m.
at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin. Burial followed in East
Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Jerry Powell officiated the
services.
Mrs. Williams was a retired nurse and a member of
Southside Baptist Church. She was born July 1, 1919 in
Waterloo, Alabama to the late George W. Gean and Florence
Mabelle Perkins Gean. In addition to her parents, Mrs.
Williams was also preceded in death by her husband, M.O.
Williams; and a daughter, Nelda Williams.
Mrs. Williams is survived by a daughter, Dixie Timmons
of Martin; two grandchildren, Tracie Jackson and Brandi
Wright; and one great-grandchild, Audrey Wright.
Thomas Ira Edwards
Thomas Ira Edwards, 65, of Summerville, husband of
Patricia Gayle Clark Edwards, died Thursday, January 3,
2008, at his residence. Funeral services were held Sunday,
January 6, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Old Fort Baptist Church in
Summerville. Burial followed in Dorchester Memory Gardens in
Summerville.
Mr. Edwards was born August 25, 1942 in Martin, the son
of the late William Cairel Edwards and Hazel Platt Edwards
Gummoe. He was a graduate of Martin High School. He was a
veteran of the United States Air Force serving in the
Vietnam War. Mr. Edwards was a board member of Old Fort Fire
Department and a member of Old Fort Baptist Church. He
worked for NOAA and the Charleston Naval Shipyard.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Edwards is also survived
by two daughters, Tina Manchester and husband Ronald of
Ridgeville, and Denise Edwards of Summerville; a grandson,
Stephen Manchester of Ridgeville; and a sister, Sue Cantrell
of Greenfield.
