Boyd Vernon McKay
Boyd Vernon McKay, 80, of Martin, died Saturday, January 26,
2008, at his home. Funeral services for Mr. McKay were held
Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Murphy Funeral
Home in Martin. Burial followed in East Side Cemetery in
Martin. Rev. James Kinsey officiated the services.
Mr. McKay was retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and
was a member of the First Christian Church. He was born June
26, 1927 in Turkey, Texas to the late Delbert Walter McKay
and Lillie Ethel Rutherford McKay.
Mr. McKay is survived by his wife, Mrs. Grace Lillie Wiley
McKay of Martin; two sons, Bobby McKay of Martin, and Boyd
Lynn McKay of Odessa, Texas; a brother, Howard McKay of
Kermit, Texas; two sisters, Alline Hicks of Kermit, Texas,
and Ruby May Woods of Quitaque, Texas; five grandchildren;
and one great-grandchild.
Brylee Faith Drinkard
Brylee Faith Drinkard, infant, of Greenfield, died Monday,
January 14, 2008. Graveside services were held Friday,
January 18, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Pounds Cemetery in
Idlewild, Tennessee.
Survivors include her parents, John and Christy Drinkard; and
twin sister, McKenzie.
Ethel Carline Hawks
Ethel Carline Hawks, 77, of Greenfield, died Sunday, January
20, 2008, at Jackson Madison County Hospital. Funeral
services for Mrs. Hawks were held Wednesday, January 23,
2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Williams Funeral Home Chapel in
Greenfield. Burial followed in Morris Cemetery in
Greenfield. Bruce McCartney officiated the services.
Mrs. Hawks was a former factory worker for Stetson Boots. She
was born August 26, 1930 in Greenfield to the late Carl D.
Childress and Ava Smith. In addition to her parents, Mrs.
Hawks was also preceded in death by two husbands, Damon
Hollis and Johnnie Hawks; a daughter, Brenda Cupples; two
brothers, James Roy and Thomas Childress; a sister, Pauline
Franks; and one grandchild.
Mrs. Hawks is survived by five sons, Ronald (Judy) Hollis of
Greenfield, Robert (Sharon) Hollis of Greenfield, Raymond
(Anita) Hollis of Greenfield, Randall (Tomena) Hollis of
McKenzie, and Jimmy (Shelia) Cupples of Fruitland,
Tennessee; a daughter, Kay (Keith) Travis of Memphis; four
sisters, Mary Sue Baxter of California, Sarah Mitchell of
Michigan, Lillie Cantrell of Greenfield, and Joan Lassiter
of Texas; and five brothers, Gilbert Childress of Milan,
David Childress of Greenfield, Robert Childress of
Greenfield, Danny Ray Childress of Florida, and Stanley
Childress of Florida.
Francine V. Featherston
Francine V. Featherston, 74, of Greenfield, died Friday,
January 25, 2008, at Regional Hospital of Jackson. Funeral
services for Ms. Featherston were held Sunday, January 27,
2008, at 2:00 p.m. at the Meridian Cumberland Presbyterian
Church. Burial followed in Meridian Cemetery in Greenfield.
David Lancaster officiated the services.
Ms. Featherston was a homemaker and attended the Meridian
Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Greenfield. She was born
July 13, 1933 in Martin to the late Edd Featherston and Nona
Carlton. In addition to her parents, Ms. Featherston was
also preceded in death by three sisters, Cora Boaz,
Catherine Bates, and Cozette Weddington; and a brother,
Phillip Featherston.
Ms. Featherston is survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
James Martin Hamlin
James Martin Hamlin, 89, of Sharon, died Monday, January 21,
2008, at his home. Funeral services for Mr. Hamlin were held
Wednesday, January 23, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sharon
Church of Christ. Burial followed in New Salem Cemetery in
Dresden. Larry Powers and Robert Taylor, Jr. officiated the
services.
Mr. Hamlin was a retired Postmaster at the Sharon Post Office
and a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of
the Sharon Church of Christ, where he also served as an
elder, a member of the DAV, the American Legion, the
Association of Retired Postmasters, and the NRA. He was the
former Building Inspector of the City of Sharon, former
director of the Weakley County Chamber of Commerce and an
Ombudsman. Mr. Hamlin was born September 9, 1918 in Weakley
County.
Mr. Hamlin is survived by a daughter, Sandra (Joe) Coffey of
Manor, Texas; a son, Coleman (Wanda) Hamlin of Sharon; a
brother, Mark (Mona) Hamlin, Jr. of Franklin; five
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
June Oliver Thompson
June Oliver Thompson, 81, of Martin, died Wednesday, January
23, 2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral
services for Mrs. Thompson were held Friday, January 25,
2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin. Burial
followed in East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Houston
Patrick officiated the services.
Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker and had also managed the
Beaumont Apartments for several years. She was a member of
Broadway Baptist Church and a graduate of Martin High
School. Mrs. Thompson was born December 9, 1926 in Martin to
the late Jesse N. Oliver and Corrine Manley Oliver. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Thompson was also preceded in
death by her husband, Herbert Thompson; a daughter, Marsha
Thompson; two brothers, Jesse N. Oliver, Jr. and Robert M.
(Bobby) Oliver; and three sisters, Cyril Bearden, Dorris
Mooring, and Barbara Long.
Mrs. Thompson is survived by a son, Mike G. Thompson of
Martin; a sister, Jean Vincent of Martin; four
grandchildren, Joey Guest of Martin, Brad Thompson of
Kenton, Christle McKee of Martin, and Michael Thompson of
Clinton, Maine; and seven great-grandchildren.
Richard Ned Herr
Richard Ned Herr, 73, of Gleason, died Friday, January 11,
2008, at Regional Hospital of Jackson. Graveside services
for Mr. Herr were held Wednesday, January 16, 2008, at 11:00
a.m. at Beech Springs Cemetery in Gleason. Rev. Gene Price
officiated the services.
Mr. Herr was a factory worker and a veteran of the United States
Army. He was born August 25, 1934 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to
the late Ronald and Ruth Bender Herr.
Mr. Herr is survived by a son, Thomas Herr of Gleason; two
daughters, Charlotte Gabbard and Beverly Herr; a brother,
Jerry Herr; two sisters, Louise Jones and Dotti Foss;
seventeen grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Verna Lee Morris Richmond
Verna Lee Morris Richmond, 98, of Dresden, died Saturday,
January 26, 2008, at Weakley County Rehabilitation & Nursing
Center in Dresden. Funeral services for Mrs. Richmond were
held Monday, January 28, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Bowlin
Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in Eastside
Cemetery in Martin. Dr. Don McCulley and Dr. Trent Bullock
officiated the services.
Mrs. Richmond was a housewife and a member of the First
Baptist Church in Dresden. She was born in Gleason to the
late William H. and Fannie Smith. In addition to her
parents, Mrs. Richmond was also preceded in death by two
husbands, Mr. Tom Morris and Mr. Russell Richmond; two
sisters, Emogia Clark and Imogene Winstead; and a brother,
Berlie Smith.
Mrs. Richmond is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Yvonne Melton Mayo
Yvonne Melton Mayo, 94, of Dresden, died Monday, January 21,
2008, at Weakley County Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in
Dresden. Graveside services for Mrs. Mayo were held
Thursday, January 24, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Sunset Cemetery
in Dresden. Tom Mayo and Bro. Brian Crow officiated the
services.
Mrs. Mayo was a housewife and a member of the Weakley County
Church of Christ in Dresden. She was born in Dresden to the
late Carl Lee and Bessie Leone Parham Melton. In addition to
her parents, Mrs. Mayo was also preceded in death by her
husband, Mr. Bill T. Mayo; three sisters, Rachel Johnson,
Ruth Buckley, and Virginia Melton; and a brother, Mark
Melton.
Mrs. Mayo is survived by three daughters, Jeanne Burch of
Dresden, Grace (Glynn) Parker of Dresden, and Judith (Tommy)
Bradberry of Dresden; two sons, Tom (Sandra) Mayo of
Dresden, and Jimmy (Kay) Mayo of Austin, Texas; twenty-one
grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and five
great-great-grandchildren.
