Archie R. Overturf, Jr.
Archie R. Overturf, Jr., 83, of Dresden, died Tuesday,
December 25, 2007, at Jackson Madison County General
Hospital.
Mr. Overturf was a retired electrician and construction
worker. He attended Grove Hill United Methodist Church in
Dresden and taught Sunday school. Mr. Overturf was a Shriner,
a Mason, and member of the Moose Lodge, where he was a past
officer. He was a native of Royalton, Illinois and the son
of the late Archie R. Overturf, Sr. and Ruby Lawrence
Overturf. In addition to his parents, Mr. Overturf was also
preceded by his wife of more than 60 years, Mrs. Bettye Ann
Jane Overturf; a sister, Rowena June Holland; and two
brothers, Albert Henry Overturf and Fred Overturf.
Mr. Overturf is survived by two sons, Kenneth Norman Overturf
of Sauget, Illinois, and Donald Leslie Overturf of
Belleville, Illinois; three grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
Daniel Dean Cobern
Daniel Dean Cobern, 42, of Martin, died Tuesday, December 18,
2007, at his home. Funeral services for Mr. Cobern were held
Sunday, December 23, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Murphy Funeral
Home in Martin. Burial followed in East Side Cemetery in
Martin. Rev. Don Bullock officiated the services.
Mr. Cobern was a self-employed roofer and also worked
construction. He was born March 10, 1965 in Chicago,
Illinois. Mr. Cobern was preceded in death by his father,
Charles Cobern.
Mr. Cobern is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Joanne Toon
Cobern of Martin; a daughter, Rebecca Cobern of Chicago,
Illinois; two stepsons, James Atherton of LaGrance,
Kentucky, and Jessie Atherton of Mayfield, Kentucky; his
mother, Doris Vancleave Cobern of Martin; a brother, Kelly
Cobern of Martin; and three sisters, Linda Cobern of
Dresden, Charmine Innocente of Chicago, Illinois, and Doris
Cobern of Chicago, Illinois.
L.J. Griffin
L.J. Griffin, 72, of McKenzie, died Friday, December 21,
2007, at McKenzie Regional Hospital. Memorial services for
Mr. Griffin were held Sunday, December 23, 2007, at 4:00
p.m. at Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Greenfield.
Mr. Griffin was a self-employed dozer operator. He was born
January 13, 1935 in Tennessee to the late O.B. Griffin and
Lena Bynum.
Mr. Griffin is survived by his wife, Mable (Covington)
Griffin of McKenzie; two sons, Terry Griffin of Olive
Branch, Mississippi, and Michael Griffin of Gleason; three
daughters, Angie Woods of Memphis, Beth Collins of Dresden,
and Karen Mitchell of Gleason; and four grandchildren.
Robert Donald (Bob) Fisher
Robert Donald (Bob) Fisher, 87, of Jackson, died Tuesday,
December 25, 2007, at Madison County General Hospital in
Jackson. Funeral services for Mr. Fisher were held Thursday,
December 27, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in
Martin. Burial followed in East Side Cemetery in Martin.
Rev. Bill McClarin, Rev. Russell Gallimore, and Rev. Paul
Douglass officiated the services.
Mr. Fisher was retired from the Department of Agriculture as
Area and District Soil Conservationist after 38 years of
service. He was a member of the First United Methodist
Church in Martin and a veteran of the United States Army
having served in WWII. Mr. Fisher was a graduate of the
University of Tennessee Junior College in Martin and the
University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He was born August 8,
1920 in Sharon to the late Alva Fisher and Bertha Tice
Fisher. In addition to his parents, Mr. Fisher was also
preceded in death by his wife, Rava Nell Hawks Fisher; and
three sisters, Lois Smith, Hazel Harding, and Ruth Fisher.
Mr. Fisher is survived by a daughter, Lesa Prince (Jack) of
Jackson; a brother, John Fisher of Martin; and five
grandchildren, William David Prince, James Tyler Prince, Amy
Nicole Prince, April Rose Prince, Matthew Prince, and Robert
Belton.
Ronald "Ronnie" Larry Gallimore
Ronald "Ronnie" Larry Gallimore, 60, of Dresden, died
Wednesday, December 19, 2007, at Volunteer Community
Hospital in Martin. Funeral services for Mr. Gallimore were
held Saturday, December 22, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at Gallimore
Funeral Home Chapel in Gleason. Burial followed in Sunset
Cemetery in Dresden. Rev. Donald Doster officiated the
services.
Mr. Gallimore was a maintenance worker for the Weakley County
Board of Education and a member of Davis Memorial Baptist
Church. He was born June 23, 1947 in Dresden to the late
Herchell and Lela Roberts Gallimore. In addition to his
parents, Mr. Gallimore was also preceded in death by three
sisters, Patsy Boane, Linda Spain, and Paula Arnold.
Mr. Gallimore is survived by two brothers, Gerry (Kay)
Gallimore of Dresden and Terry (Jana) Gallimore of Dresden.
Roy L. Auvenshine
Roy L. Auvenshine, 63, of Dresden, died Thursday, December
27, 2007, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral
services for Bro. Auvenshine were held Saturday, December
29, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Burial
followed in Sand Hill Cemetery. Bro. Wayne Perkins and Bro.
Bob Copeland officiated the services.
Bro. Auvenshine was the preacher for Bethlehem Baptist Church
for over 30 years. He was born, July 4, 1944 in Dresden.
Bro. Auvenshine was preceded in death by his father, C.D.
Auvenshine; and a brother, Dennis Auvenshine.
Bro. Auvenshine is survived by his wife, Linda (Stewart)
Auvenshine of Dresden; a son, Tracy Auvenshine of Dresden; a
daughter, Donna Auvenshine of Dresden; his mother, Elaine
(Underwood) Auvenshine; three brothers, Debro Auvenshine of
Akin, South Carolina, Johnny Auvenshine of Eaton Rapids,
Michigan, and Donald Auvenshine of Lansing, Michigan; and
one granddaughter, Riley Auvenshine.
Velma Lucille Masingille
Velma Lucille Masingille, 75, of Tullahoma, Tennessee, died
Wednesday, December 26, 2007, at the home of her niece in
Martin. She was born on August 20, 1932 in Franklin County,
Alabama to the late Ira Franklin and Leona Susan (Hallmark)
Fannin. She was a homemaker.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 29, 2007, at
1:00 p.m. at Tullahoma Funeral Home with Reverend Daymond
Duck officiating. Burial followed at Concord Cemetery.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by
her husband, C.T. Masingille; a sister, Marva Lee Rose; and
a nephew, Timmy Parham.
Mrs. Masingille is survived by her sister, Janice Parham
(Dwayne) of Martin; a niece, Laura Rose, also of Martin; and
two nephews, David Rose (Patty) of Dyersburg, and Jody
Parham of Nashville.
Virginia T. Dudley
Virginia T. Dudley, 89, of Greenfield, died Friday, December
21, 2007, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral
services for Mrs. Dudley were held Sunday, December 23,
2007, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in
Greenfield. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery in
Greenfield. Richard Denton and Mike Jeffers officiated the
services.
Mrs. Dudley was a housewife and attended the United Methodist
Church. She was born July 13, 1918 in Dresden to the late
Ben W. Travis and Nona (Brummitt) Travis. In addition to her
parents, Mrs. Dudley was also preceded in death by her
husband, William (Bill) Dudley; and a brother, Benjamin
Travis.
Mrs. Dudley is survived by a son, Bob (RayAnn) Dudley of
Greenfield; two daughters, Ann (Edmond) Stewart of Gleason,
and Billie Jean Mackin of Greenfield; six grandchildren; and
seven great-grandchildren.
William Freeman VanCleave
William Freeman VanCleave, 88, of Dresden, died Thursday,
December 20, 2007, at his home. Funeral services for Mr.
VanCleave were held Sunday, December 23, 2007, at 2:00 p.m.
at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in
Olive Branch Cemetery in Como. Bro. Donald Doster officiated
the services.
Mr. VanCleave was a retired truck driver for WEN Products and
a member of West Union Baptist Church in Dresden. He was
born in April 21, 1919 in McKenzie to the late Ernest J. and
Fleete Burnett VanCleave. In addition to his parents, Mr.
VanCleave was also preceded in death by two wives, Mrs.
Eunice Campbell VanCleave and Mrs. Audrey Reynolds VanCleave;
a daughter, Linda Palmer; three sisters; and two brothers.
Mr. VanCleave is survived by a daughter, Judith Chwistek of
Mt. Carroll, Illinois; three sons, Kenneth VanCleave of
Dresden, Russell VanCleave of Dresden, and Mitchell
VanCleave of Dresden; fourteen grandchildren; and eleven
great-grandchildren.
