James W. Marcus
James W. Marcus, 68, of Dresden, died Monday, January 7,
2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin.
Mr. Marcus was a self-employed truck driver and attended Oak
Grove Baptist Church. He was born May 25, 1939 in Greenfield
to the late Gueather Marcus and Mary Warren.
Mr. Marcus is survived by his wife, Sherry P. Marcus of
Dresden; two sons, Barry Mount of Martin, and David J.
Marcus of Latham; a daughter, Patricia Baker (Shane) of
Sharon; three sisters, Judy Ripplee (Jerry) of Pensacola,
Florida, Joyce Beasley (Walter) of Dresden, and Sue Hartz of
McKenzie; a brother, David Marcus (Beckey) of Dresden; and
four grandchildren.
Jamye Pritchard Wood
Jamye Pritchard Wood, 90, of Memphis, died Saturday, January
12, 2008, at Applingwood Health Care in Memphis. Graveside
services for Mrs. Wood were held Tuesday, January 15, 2008,
at 1:00 p.m. at Wood Cemetery in Martin.
Mrs. Wood was a member of Mullins United Methodist Church.
She was born September 8, 1917 in Pontotoc, Mississippi to
the late James Monroe Pritchard and Mamye McDowell
Pritchard. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wood was also
preceded in death by her husband, Paul Thomas Wood.
Mrs. Wood is survived by a daughter, Paula Rice of Memphis; a
niece, Jackie Duncan of Atlanta, Georgia; and a great-niece,
Katherine Davenport of Atlanta, Georgia.
Lester Bill Voorhies
Lester Bill Voorhies, 73, of Greenfield, died Monday, January
7, 2008, at Jackson Madison County Hospital. Funeral
services for Mr. Voorhies were held Thursday, January 10,
2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Greenfield.
Burial followed in Highland Cemetery in Greenfield. Dr. Roy
Whaley officiated the services.
Mr. Voorhies was a school teacher for the Weakley County
School Systems for 33 years, mostly teaching with the FFA.
He was a 50-year member of the Rotary Club, an elder at
First Presbyterian Church in Greenfield, and a member of the
FFA. Mr. Voorhies was born January 1, 1935 in Hohenwald to
the late Flavel Voorhies and Irene Anderson Voorhies. In
addition to his parents, Mr. Voorhies was also preceded in
death by two sisters, Waldean Johns and Virginia Rester; and
one brother, Bobby Voorhies.
Mr. Voorhies is survived by his wife, Barbara Voorhies of
Greenfield; a daughter, Leslie Franks of Virginia Beach,
Virginia; three sons, Brad Voorhies of Tokyo, Japan, Ben
Voorhies of Memphis, and Brent Duncan of Jackson; a brother,
George Voorhies of Nashville; and five grandchildren,
Michael Franks, Jennifer Franks, Maxwell Voorhies, Luke
Voorhies, and Sterling Duncan.
Linda Marie Jackson
Linda Marie Jackson, 64, of Dresden, died Thursday, January
10, 2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Private
services for Mrs. Jackson were held Sunday, January 13,
2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home in Dresden. Jerry
Dale Monroe officiated the services.
Mrs. Jackson was a retired factory worker at Sharon
Manufacturing and a Baptist by faith. She was a native of
Dresden and the daughter of the late Edward and Maxine
Parrish Wright. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jackson was
also preceded in death by her first husband, Rev. Gerald Ray
Howington; and a brother, Thomas Edward Wright.
Mrs. Jackson is survived by her husband, Mr. Maxie Jackson of
the Shawtown Community; two daughters, Tina (Bill) Cantrell
of Martin, and Rhonda Rickman of Dresden; four
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Lona Jane Buress
Lona Jane Buress, 96, of Dresden, died Sunday, January 6,
2008, at Crockett County Nursing Home in Alamo. Funeral
services for Mrs. Buress were held Wednesday, January 9,
2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in
Dresden. Burial followed in Olive Branch Cemetery in Como.
Bro. Bobby Kirkpatrick officiated the services.
Mrs. Buress was a housewife and a member of Como Church of
Christ. She born February 5, 1911 in Decatur County to the
late John and Cassey Cole Spence. In addition to her
parents, Mrs. Buress was also preceded in death by two
husbands, Novell Wilbanks and K.W. Buress.
Mrs. Buress is survived by two daughters, Jane Hilliard of
Alamo, and Mary Sue Staggs of Bogota, Tennessee; four sons,
Joe Wilbanks of Como, Buddy Wilbanks of Crockett Mills,
Danny Buress of Dyersburg, and Dicky Buress of Tiptonville;
a sister, Fronia Allison of Milledgeville, Tennessee;
thirteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and
two great-great-grandchildren.
Nathan Lee Tabor
Nathan Lee Tabor, 24, of Dresden, died Friday, January 4,
2008, at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Funeral
services for Mr. Tabor were held Wednesday, January 9, 2008,
at 2:00 p.m. at Journey of Faith to Freedom Church in
Greenfield. Burial followed in Hornbeak Cemetery in
Greenfield.
Mr. Tabor was a tree trimmer for Gibbons Tree Service and a
member of Journey of Faith to Freedom Church in Greenfield.
He was born in Rochelle, Illinois.
Mr. Tabor is survived by his parents, Tracey Lynn Hoots of
Dresden, and Harold Blanton of Tampico, Illinois; a sister,
Shaye Blanton of Tampico, Illinois; and his grandparents,
Doug and Pam Johns of Greenfield.
Phillip Elder Worrell
Phillip Elder Worrell, 91, of Martin, died Monday, December
31, 2007, at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
Funeral services for Mr. Worrell were held Thursday, January
3, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home in Sharon.
Burial followed in Tansil Cemetery. Rev. Billy Cobb
officiated the services.
Mr. Worrell was retired from the manufacturing industry. He
was born March 25, 1916 in Weakley County.
Mr. Worrell is survived by his wife, Wilsie Worrell of
Martin; two daughters, Penny Gates of Round Lake, Illinois,
and Peggy Johannsen of North Chicago, Illinois; a sons,
Phillip Earl Worrell of Aurora, Illinois; eleven
grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren.
Sammye Lou Glasgow
Sammye Lou Glasgow, 75, of Clarksville, Tennessee, died
Saturday, January 12, 2008, at her residence. The funeral
services were held Tuesday, January 15, 2008, at11:00 a.m.
at Sykes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles "Skip"
Armistead officiating. Burial followed in Entombment
Resthaven Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Mrs. Glasgow was born in Weakley County on December 6, 1932,
the daughter of the late Sam and Velma Owen Pentecost. She
was retired from Montgomery County Government.
Mrs. Glasgow is survived by her husband, Joseph Larry
Glasgow; sons, Scott (Tammy) Glasgow of Adams, and Terry
(Cindy) Marshall of Ashland City, Tennessee; brother, Joseph
Lenzen of Waterford, Michigan; sister, Melody Baranski of
Troy, Michigan; six grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
