Archie D. Sloan
Mr. Archie D. Sloan, 83, of Martin, died Sunday, January 27,
2008, at the Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin.
Services for Mr. Sloan were held Wednesday, January 30,
2008, in the Murphy Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. John Forgy
officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in
McKenzie.
Mr. Sloan was retired from Argo-Collier Truck Line, Inc. He
attended Southwestern University in Memphis and was a US
Army Air Corps Veteran. Mr. Sloan was born February 18, 1924
to the late W.T. and Ethel Denen Sloan.
Mr. Sloan is survived by his wife, Mrs. Betty Barker Sloan of
Martin; a son, Ty Sloan (Audrey) of Memphis; and two
grandchildren, Lisa Sloan and Ginger Smith.
Charles Donald "Donnie" Pugh
Charles Donald "Donnie" Pugh, 59, of Sharon, died Wednesday,
January 30, 2008, at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville.
Funeral services for Mr. Pugh were held Saturday, February
2, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin.
Burial followed in East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Louis
Whiteman officiated the services.
Mr. Pugh formerly worked for the City of Martin and was a
graduate of Martin High School. He was born August 4, 1948
to the late Charles Pugh and Gertrude Platt Pugh.
Edith P. Westmoreland
Edith P. Westmoreland, 79, of Bradford, died Friday, February
1, 2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral
services for Ms. Westmoreland were held Sunday, February 3,
2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home Chapel in
Greenfield. Burial followed in Hornbeak Cemetery in
Greenfield. James H. Hazelwood and Don Bowlin officiated the
services.
Ms. Westmoreland was a homemaker and attended Moore's Chapel
Baptist Church in Greenfield. She was born August 31, 1928
in Durma, Mississippi to the late Bunk Parish and Millie
Rose. In addition to her parents, Ms. Westmoreland was also
preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Lavender.
Ms. Westmoreland is survived by two daughters, Sherry
(Marlon) Featherston of Bradford, and Glenda (Randy)
Cantrell of South Fulton; a sister, Rose Williams of
Greenfield; and nine grandchildren.
James "Jim" Stanley Butts
James "Jim" Stanley Butts, 48, of Dresden, died Saturday,
February 2, 2008, at Jackson Madison County General
Hospital. Funeral services for Mr. Butts were held Tuesday,
February 5, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home
Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in Sunset Cemetery in
Dresden. Dr. Don McCulley and Representative Mark Maddox
officiated the services.
Mr. Butts was a self-employed carpenter and a member of
Dresden First Baptist Church. He was born in Union City.
Mr. Butts is survived by a daughter, Britne Bone of Dresden;
a son, James Christopher Butts of Dresden; his parents,
James B. "Bud" and Betty Sue Johnson Butts of Dresden; a
sister, Dana (Steve) Workman of Atlanta, Georgia; one
granddaughter, Isabella Bone of Dresden; a niece, Nikki
Green of Atlanta, Georgia; and two nephews, Ben Workman of
Atlanta, Georgia, and Cliff Workman of Atlanta, Georgia.
Joan Bates
Joan Bates, 75, of Greenfield, died Sunday, February 3, 2008,
at her home. Funeral services for Ms. Bates will be held
today, Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Williams
Funeral Home in Greenfield. Burial will follow in Pilgrims
Rest Cemetery. Brent Arnold will officiate the services.
Ms. Bates was a cook and a factory worker. She was born April
12, 1932 in Greenfield to the late Aubrey Raines and Selma
Gilliam Raines.
Ms. Bates is survived by a brother, Alvin Gilliam Raines of
Kent, Washington.
Linda Kay Houston
Linda Kay Houston, 58, of Greenfield, died Monday, February
4, 2008, at her home. Funeral services for Mrs. Houston will
be held today, Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at
Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Greenfield. Burial will
follow in Morris Cemetery in Greenfield. Ronnie McClure,
Dwayne Harris, and Mark Abbott will officiate the services.
Mrs. Houston was a housewife and attended Bethlehem Baptist
Church. She was born October 29, 1949 in Greenfield to the
late Willie Arnold and Louise Hubble.
Mrs. Houston is survived by her husband, Vernal (Shorty)
Houston of Greenfield; three sons, David Houston of Gleason,
Tim Houston of Dresden, and Jeff Houston of McLemoresville;
two sisters, Susie Horn of Idlewild, and Joyce Jones of
Gleason; three brothers, Eddie Arnold of Greenfield, Johnny
Arnold of Dresden, and Joe David Tucker of Greenfield; ten
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Mary Ruth Segraves
Mary Ruth Segraves, 80, of Gleason, died Thursday, January
31, 2008, at McKenzie Regional Hospital. Funeral services
for Mrs. Segraves were held Sunday, February 3, 2008, at
2:00 p.m. at Gallimore Funeral Home Chapel in Gleason.
Burial followed in Hopewell Cemetery. Rev. Vernon Smith and
Rev. Don Bowlin officiated the services.
Mrs. Segraves was a caregiver and a member of Liberty Baptist
Church. She was born February 21, 1927 in McKenzie to the
late Bill and Annie Edwards Wiseman. In addition to her
parents, Mrs. Segraves was also preceded in death by her
husband, Earnest Segraves; three brothers, Ralph Wiseman,
Bobby Wiseman, and Billy Wiseman; and a sister, Shelby Long.
Mrs. Segraves is survived by two sons, Coy Segraves of
Gleason, and LeRoy Segraves of Union City; three daughters,
Maxine Lands of Louisville, Kentucky, Gengi Brown of
Gleason, and Marcy McKinney of McKenzie; ten grandchildren;
sixteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Robert "Robin" Reed Montgomery
Mr. Robert "Robin" Reed Montgomery, 66, of Palmersville, died
Friday, January 25, 2008, at St. Thomas Hospital in
Nashville. Services for Mr. Montgomery were held Monday,
January 28, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at the Union Chapel Church of
Christ in Palmersville. Burial was in the Palmersville
Cemetery. Bro. Shannon Seaton officiated the services.
Bowlin Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Montgomery was the Palmersville School Principal. He was
born in Mingo County, West Virginia to Robert Lewis and
Helen Hendricks Montgomery. He was a member of the Union
Chapel Church of Christ and Istachatta Church of Christ in
Istachatta, Florida. In addition to his parents, Mr.
Montgomery was preceded in death by a son, Robert Kent
Montgomery.
Mr. Montgomery is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sherry Oliver
Montgomery of Palmersville; a daughter-in-law, Misty
Montgomery of Lyles, Tennessee; a son and daughter-in-law,
Jeffrey Brent (Michelle) Montgomery of Palmersville; a
sister, Jo Nell (Glen) Austin of Paonia, Colorado; four
brothers, George Montgomery of Palmersville, Jim Montgomery
of Savannah, Gary Montgomery of Paris and Dennis Montgomery
of Dresden; and three grandchildren, Alex and Nate
Montgomery of Palmersville and Ben Montgomery of Lyles,
Tennessee.
Gladys Mae Laws
Mrs. Gladys Mae Laws, 77, of Palmersville, died Friday,
January 25, 2008, at the Weakley County Nursing Rehab and
Nursing Center in Dresden. Services for Mrs. Laws were held
Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at the New Hope
Baptist Church in Latham. Bro. Dewayne Harris and Bro. Craig
Peevyhouse officiated the services. Burial was in the New
Hope Church Cemetery. Bowlin Funeral Home was in charge of
the arrangements.
Mrs. Laws was a Housewife. She was born in Weakley County to
the late Clarence Gilbert and Grace Prince Summers. She was
reared by Clarence and Mary Prince. Mrs. Laws was a member
of the New Hope Baptist Church in Latham. In addition to her
parents, Mrs. Laws was preceded in death by her husband, Mr.
Joe Thomas Laws; a daughter, Bertha Lou Laws and a
grandchild, Kassie Hoke.
Mrs. Laws is survived by two daughters Joyce Ann (Wayne) Hoke
of Greenfield and Tammy Lea (Marty) Dunn of Dresden; a son,
Joe David (Jackie) Laws of Palmersville; two half sisters,
Sue Hopkins of Paris and Dorothy McWherter of Martin; a
brother, Daniel Gilbert Summers of Stanton, Kentucky; three
half brothers, Robert Summers of Gleason, Kenneth Summers of
Sikeston, Missouri and Richard Summers of Dresden; and seven
grandchildren, Samuel and Grace Laws, Ashley Bryson, Summer
and Tyler Hoke and Thomas and Alex Dunn.
Jason B. "Tootsie" Workman
Mrs. Jason B. "Tootsie" Workman, 63, of Dresden, died Monday,
January 28, 2008, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in
Memphis. Services for Mrs. Workman were held Thursday,
January 31, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. in the Bowlin Funeral Home
Chapel in Dresden. Burial was in the Sunset Cemetery. Bro.
Joe Eaton officiated the services.
Mrs. Workman was a Cosmetologist. She was born in Fulton,
Kentucky to the late Lester "Jacks" Eugene and Bessie
Frances Hargrove Williams. Mrs. Workman was a member of the
Hodges Chapel Baptist Church near Dresden.
Mrs. Workman is survived by her husband, Mr. Bobby Joe
Workman of Dresden; two daughters, Saletta Brooks of Dresden
and Tammy Mansfield of Hendersonville, Tennessee; a son,
Jeffery Harris of Baldwinville, New York; two step sons,
Randy Workman of Martin and Ronald Workman of Latham; two
sisters, Maggie Barrix of Michigan and Betty Odle of
Dresden; a brother, Harold Williams of Martin; 11
grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
Phillip Ray Wright
Phillip Ray Wright, 62, of Greenfield, died Saturday, January
26, 2008 at Baptist Hospital in Memphis. Services for Mr.
Wright were held Tuesday, January 29, at 3:00 p.m. at First
Baptist Church in Greenfield with Dr. Joe Lusby and Rev.
Wendell Jellison officiating. Burial was in Wood Cemetery in
Martin. Williams Funeral Home in Greenfield was in charge of
arrangements.
Mr. Wright was born August 26, 1945 in Memphis to the late
Ira Dale and Martha Sue Parish Wright. He was the owner and
operator of Whitehouse, Inc.
Mr. Wright is survived by his wife, Delores Armour Wright; a
son Brent "B" (Sherrie) Wright and a daughter, Beth (Trent)
Scates, all of Greenfield; two brothers, Richard (Donna)
Wright of Martin and Clem (Peggy) Wright of South Fulton;
five grandchildren, Reed, McCall, Amy Claire, Anna Dale and
Matt.
Robert Laurence Prather
Robert Laurence Prather, 81, of McKenzie, died Wednesday,
January 30, 2008, at McKenzie Regional Hospital. Funeral
services were held Saturday, February 2, 2008, at 2:00 p.m.
at McKenzie Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Allen
officiating. Burial followed at Caledonia Cemetery.
Mr. Prather was born September 9, 1926 in Clarksburg to the
late Willie V. and Lessie Phillips Prather. He was a retired
factory worker and a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist
Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and later in
the Tennessee National Guard. He was preceded in death by
one daughter, Jana E. Hodge.
Survivors include his wife, Lavada Smith Prather of McKenzie;
four sons, Jerry Prather of Huntingdon, Robert S. Prather of
Dresden, Terry D. Prather and Stephen E. Prather, both of
McKenzie; one sister, Mary Vawter of Trenton; and eight
grandchildren.
Ruth Ann Mitchell
Ruth Ann Mitchell, 73, of Greenfield, died Wednesday, January
30, 2008, at the Humboldt Nursing Home. Services for Ms.
Mitchell were held Friday, February 1, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. in
the Williams Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in the Brock's
Cemetery in Greenfield. Richard Denton and Phil Mitchell
officiated the services.
Ms. Mitchell was a Housewife. She was born November 3, 1934
to the late William Adams and Bertha Raney Adams.
Ms. Mitchell is survived by a daughter, Patricia Johnson of
Greenfield; a son, Tony Mitchell of Greenfield; two sisters,
Marie Usery and Sue Williamson both of Greenfield and three
grandchildren, Stephanie Turner, Candice Mitchell and Adam
Mitchell.
Shea Passion Redlark
Shea Passion Redlark, 27 days old, died Thursday, January 30,
2008, at Kosair Children's Hospital of Louisville, Kentucky.
Graveside services were held Saturday, February 2, 2008, at
2:00 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Bro. Bob Copeland
officiated the services.
She was born on January 3, 2008, in Owensboro, Kentucky to
Michael and Jacquelyn Darnell Redlark. In addition to her
parents, she is also survived by a sister, Bella Elizabeth
Redlark of Owensboro, Kentucky; and grandparents, Jackie
Darnell and Patricia Hopper of Dresden, Cheri Redlark of
Muskego, Wisconsin, and Thomas Redlark of Graham,
Washington.
Thomas Harold Kent
Thomas Harold Kent, 58, of Dresden, died Wednesday, January
30, 2008, at his home. Memorial services for Mr. Kent were
held Friday, February 1, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. in the Gallimore
Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Bob Copeland officiated the
services.
Mr. Kent was born September 12, 1948 in Dyersburg to the late
Esby and Martha Headly Kent. In addition to his parents, Mr.
Kent was preceded in death by his wife, Debra Hatch Kent.
Mr. Kent is survived by a son, Randy Kent of Gleason; two
daughters, Charlotte McAbee and Jodie Kent, both of Gleason;
two sisters, Alice Green and Mary Boane, both of Gleason;
and one grandchild.
