Basil L. Chappell
Basil L. Chappell, 79, of Dresden, died Monday, December 22,
2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral services
for Mr. Chappell were held Tuesday, December 23, 2008, at 2:00 p.m.
at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in
Gearin's Chapel Cemetery near Greenfield. Dr. Don McCulley
officiated the services.
Mr. Chappell was a farmer, landlord, and retired Dresden
Policeman. He was a member of Gearin's Chapel Baptist Church. Mr.
Chappell was born in Weakley County. He was preceded in death by his
wife, Mrs. Linda Lou Mathis Chappell; two sisters, Martha Sue
Roberts and Joyce Gallimore; and a brother, John Chappell.
Mr. Chappell is survived by two sons, Mike L. Chappell of
Dresden, and Mickey W. (Shirley) Chappell of Dresden; two sisters,
Peggy (Robert Ray) Vickers of South Fulton, and Deloris (Michael)
Lowe of Fulton; a brother, Jerry (Louise) Chappell of Santa Rosa,
New Mexico; four grandchildren, Matthew, Michael, Jessica and
Jennifer Chappell, all of Dresden; a step-grandchild, Ausie Welch;
and one great-grandchild, Nathan Scott.
Flora Inez Graves Finney
Flora Inez Graves Finney, 85, of Martin, died Sunday,
December 28, 2008, at VanAyer Manor Nursing Home in Martin. Funeral
services for Mrs. Finney were held Tuesday, December 30, 2008, at
1:00 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin. Burial followed in East
Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Terry Griffin officiated the services.
Mrs. Finney formerly worked at Martin Manufacturing Company,
BayBee Shoe Company, and Kellwood Company. She was a member of
Central Baptist Church. Mrs. Finney was born February 16, 1923 in
Obion County to the late Leonard Graves and Erma Taylor Graves. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Finney was also preceded in death by
her husband, Wingo Finney; a son, Marvin Finney; and two brothers,
Tom Graves and Ralph Graves.
Mrs. Finney is survived by two sons, Melvin Finney of Martin,
and Billy Joe Finney of Greenfield; two daughters, Elaine Maxey of
Martin, and Rhonda Tibbs of Martin; two brothers, George Graves of
Clarksville, Tennessee, and Sammy Graves of Dickson; eleven
grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandson.
Lydia Henderson
Lydia Henderson, 85, of Fulton, Kentucky, died Saturday,
December 27, 2008, at Haws Memorial Nursing Home in Fulton.
Graveside services for Mrs. Henderson were held Monday, December 29,
2008, at 12:00 p.m. at Obion County Memorial Gardens. Rev. Danny
Potts officiated the services.
Mrs. Henderson was a homemaker and a Baptist by faith. She
was born January 24, 1923 in Weakley County to the late Bill and
Bertha (Berryman) Workman. In addition to her parents, Mrs.
Henderson was also preceded in death by her husband, Will D.
Henderson; four sisters; one brother; a grandson; and a
great-granddaughter.
Mrs. Henderson is survived by two sons, Bill Henderson of
Olathe, Kansas, and Larry Henderson of Dyersburg; two daughters,
Faye Hodges of Garden City, Michigan, and Linda Ingrum of Fulton,
Kentucky; two brothers, James Workman of South Fulton, and Earl
Workman of Palmersville; two sisters, Agnes Wilkerson of Fulton,
Kentucky, and Mary Lou Kowoski of Chicago, Illinois; eleven
grandchildren; and twenty-seven great-grandchildren.
Verna Taylor Marcus
Verna Taylor Marcus, 91, of Sharon, died Tuesday, December
23, 2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral
services for Ms. Marcus were held Sunday, December 28, 2008, at 2:00
p.m. at Dresden Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in
Tansil Cemetery. Rev. James Wilson officiated the services.
Ms. Marcus worked in the clerical field. She was born
February 11, 1917 in Weakley County.
Ms. Marcus is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Donald)
Gaylord of Antioch, Illinois, and Alice Hiller of Sharon; five
grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Virginia D. Godwin
Virginia D. Godwin, 69, of Greenfield, died Thursday,
December 11, 2008, at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
Funeral services for Ms. Godwin were held Sunday, December 14, 2008,
at 2:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Greenfield. Burial followed
in Brock's Cemetery in Greenfield. Mark Abbott officiated the
services.
Ms. Godwin worked for MTD. She was born July 24, 1939 in
Greenfield to the late Charlie P. Godwin and Lou Nell Baker.
Ms. Godwin is survived by three half-sisters, Wilma Navarro
of Greenfield, Winnie Mae Singletary of Florida, and Diane Paschall
of Greenfield; a half-brother, L.C. Godwin of Greenfield; two aunts,
Edna Floyd of Greenfield, and Helen Gammons of Martin; and a cousin,
Jean Gammons of Martin.
Willie Mae (Armstrong) Hornbeak
Willie Mae (Armstrong) Hornbeak, 95, died Friday, December
19, 2008, in Woodstock, Illinois. She was born June 20, 1913, to
Will and Minnie (Pratt) Armstrong, in Mississippi. She was married
to Alpheus "Fish" Hornbeak of Greenfield. Mrs. Hornbeak was an
active member of the Church of Christ in Greenfield.
She is survived by her son, Charles C. Hornbeak and
daughter-in-law, Gracie Mae (Higgs) Hornbeak of Elgin, Illinois;
grandchildren, Richard W. Hornbeak, Linda K. (Hornbeak) Townsend,
Louis E. Hornbeak, Brenda D. Hornbeak, and Charlotte L. (Hornbeak)
Garcia; eight great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren;
and a sister, Annie Lois Allen of Rockford, Illinois.
Mrs. Hornbeak was preceded in death by her husband, Alpheus
"Fish" Hornbeak; a son, Ernest Milligan; parents, Will and Minnie
Armstrong; five sisters; and one brother.
Services were held Tuesday, December 30, 2008, at Williams Funeral
Home in Greenfield, at 2:00 p.m. Burial followed in Rose Hill
Cemetery in Greenfield. Pastor Walker officiated the services.
