Three arrested following bank robbery in Martin

By David Fisher

Staff Reporter

Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the robbery of a Martin bank last Friday.

According to a press release issued by Martin Police Chief David Moore shortly after the robbery, at approximately 12:03 p.m. Friday, March 7, a black male wearing a wig and brandishing a revolver robbed Regions Bank branch, located at 844 West University Street in Martin.  He left the bank with an undisclosed amount of money.  The subject drove away in a brown, late model Jeep Wrangler with a black top, which was later found abandoned on a parking lot behind Student’s Health on the University of Tennessee at Martin campus.

As a precautionary measure, at 1:07 p.m. on Friday, UTM police notified students through a text messaging system to be aware of the incident, and students were warned to stay indoors. Police searched several buildings near the parking lot, until they determined that the suspect was no longer on campus. At 2:10 p.m. UTM Director of Public Safety Scott Robbins gave an all-clear message lifting the campus lockdown. Although the new emergency text system has been used to warn UTM students of weather emergencies on two separate occasions, this was the first time the university used it to issue a security alert.

Bank surveillance cameras provided photos of the robbery suspect and the vehicle he used in the robbery.

Members of the Martin Police Department and the FBI followed up on these and other leads.

Police determined that the jeep had been stolen from Benton County Tennessee several days prior to Friday’s hold up.

The news release states that Nashville Metro Police officers arrested three individuals in connection with the bank robbery Saturday morning.  The arrests came after Metro detectives checked a location on Dickerson Road in Nashville at the request of Martin Police, and found the three suspects in a car matching the description of a vehicle known to be in possession of one of the suspects.  The trio was arrested without incident

Those arrested were: Edward L. Tharpe, 48, identified as the bank robber; Latoya L. Wilson, 22; and her mother, Pamela S. Wilson, 44. The three suspects all resided at 118 East Peach Street in Martin.
