Local heroes honored for
saving accident victims |
Trooper
Andy Forsythe, Travis Atnip and Weakley County Sheriff's
Deputy Gary Eddings were honored during last Thursday
night's meeting of the Weakley County Commission, for their
heroic actions on May 23, 2008, when they were first on the
scene of a high speed, head on collision on Paris Hwy. 54
just west of Como.
Before emergency services arrived, these three men, at great
personal risk, pulled six people from a burning van, thereby
saving their lives. In all, there were seven patients
- three who were transported to Vanderbilt Hospital in
Nashville.
Due to the severity of the accident, and its location,
multiple agencies were dispatched to the scene by the
Weakley County 911 Center, including: two Weakley County EMS
units, two Henry County EMS units, two Air-Evac helicopters,
one Life-Flight helicopter, Weakley County Rescue Squad and
First Responders, Como-Ore Springs Fire Department,
Palmersville Fire Department, Weakley County and Henry
County Sheriff's Departments, Tennessee Highway Patrol and
Henry County Rescue.
Due to the professionalism of all responders involved, all
seven individuals will recover from their injuries.

County passes tentative budget for 2008-2009 |

With the end of the current fiscal year approaching at the
end of June, the Weakley County Commission passed a
tentative budget that will allow the county to operate while
the commission prepares a new budget for the 2008-09 fiscal
year.
The tentative countywide budget will be based on figures
from the 2007-2008 fiscal year. According to
Resolution 2008-45, which encompasses the tentative budget,
no more than 15 percent of any item be expended per calendar
month by each Department without the approval of the Weakley
County Board of Commissioners Finance, Ways, and Means
Committee until the final 2008-2009 FY Budget is adopted.
The tentative budget includes figures for the General Fund,
Highway Fund, Debt Service Fund, Department of Education,
and Solid Waste Fund.

Weakley County man sentenced to 20 years on
drug charges |
A 38-year-old Weakley County man has been sentenced to
almost 20 years in prison on drug related charges.
According to a Department of Justice press release, during
his appearance in U.S. District Court in Jackson last week,
Michael Ellison received a sentence of 235 months, which was
handed down by Chief Judge James Todd.
On January 16 of this year, Ellison pled guilty to
conspiring with others to distribute over five grams of
cocaine base (crack cocaine) in the vicinity of Dresden and
Martin.
U.S. Attorney Jerry Kitchen, who prosecuted the case,
presented evidence that Ellison was the leader of a drug
conspiracy that involved five participants that had
obstructed justice by threatening a witness and that he
possessed firearms, resulting in sentencing enhancements.

Greenfield man arrested on drug and theft charges |
Gibson County authorities arrested a 29-year-old Greenfield
man last weekend on theft and drug-related charges.
Members of the Kenton Police Department took Steven Bell of
116 Melrose Street in Greenfield into custody on Saturday,
June 21, after the discovered 4,282 hydrocodone tablets,
which have a street value of approximately $40,000, in
Bell's possession. Roughly half of the tablets were
found in Bell's vehicle and the rest at his home.
During Bell's appearance in Gibson County General Sessions
Court, he was released on $20,000 bond on charges of
possession of schedule II substance with intent to
distribute or resell and theft of property.
