Fourth quarter turnovers give Westview win

By Jason Peevyhouse

Sports Reporter

Despite giving up an early, head-turning touchdown that could have set the tone of the contest, the Westview Chargers scored 48 unanswered points - including 27 in the final frame - on their way to a 48-13 win over the Peabody Golden Tide on Friday night at Martin.

Westview was able to get the momentum early in the contest as a 41-yard pass from Harrison Moore to Buddy Legens highlighted a lengthy drive across midfield that was stalled at the 17-yard line and ended with a missed field goal.

The Golden Tide made the most of its early opportunity as it took only two plays for Peabody to find the end zone.  After a short pass set up a second and six, Tide quarterback Kendall Harper broke free for a 76-yard touchdown run to break the scoreless tie.  But, the Chargers may have gained some of that momentum back, blocking the extra point attempt to keep the Peabody lead at 6-0 with 8:22 left in the first frame.

Much like they had done on their opening drive, the Chargers began to push the ball down the field.  But, after a 10-yard run by Moore took the Chargers inside the 40-yard line, the drive appeared to stall.  But, a 33-yard pass from Moore to Legens took the Westview offense down to the Peabody 5-yard line.  From there, a pair of J.C. Griggs runs put the Chargers into the end zone to tie the game.  Hyuntae Kim's extra point gave the Chargers a 7-6 lead with 3:22 left in the first quarter.

Greenfield 2-0 in Region 7-1A after win over West Carroll

By Jimmy Gilliam

Special to the Enterprise

The Greenfield Yellowjackets defeated the West Carroll War Eagles 36-7 in a key region 7A match up.  With the football season nearing the halfway point, teams are battling for position for the playoffs and the night belonged to the Yellowjackets.

Following the homecoming ceremonies, where Taren Hatcher was crowned queen, the Yellowjackets seemed to be on their heels a bit on the opening drive as West Carroll chewed up 7:40 of the 1st quarter before Brett Perkins ripped the ball from receiver Josh Meals on a pass over the middle.  Perkins returned the interception back to mid-field, giving Greenfield good field position.  A mixture of runs by Perkins and Medling moved the ball down to West Carroll's 16-yard line, setting up a perfectly placed pass to Daniel Ricketts in the end zone.  The two-point conversion was good as Chase McMullen ran up the middle to give the Yellowjackets an 8-0 lead with 5:02 remaining in the 1st quarter.  Greenfield's defense forced a punting situation for West Carroll on the ensuing drive and wasted little time adding to their score.  Perkins got the call on three consecutive run plays, the last of which he took the toss sweep to the left, cutting back to the middle of the field and racing defenders to pay dirt for the 34-yard touchdown.  The two-point conversion was no good, but Greenfield led 14-0 over the War Eagles with 1:50 remaining in the 1st quarter.

USJ Bruins spoil Dresden homecoming

By Jeff Washburn

Editor

The Dresden Lions had their hopes for a homecoming victory crushed last Friday night by the University School of Jackson Bruins.  USJ romped over the Lions, 60-14, in the Region 8-2A match-up.

The Bruins received the opening kick-off of the game and began their first offensive series at their own 20-yard line.  Nine plays later, USJ scored their first TD of the game on a three-yard pass from quarterback Dusty Bright.  Will Purcell kicked the extra point to give the Bruins a 7-0 lead with 8:46 remaining in the first quarter.

The Lions received the USJ kick-off and started their first possession at their own 29-yard line.  On the first play from scrimmage, the Lions fumbled and turned over possession to the Bruins at the Dresden 34 yard line.  On the first play from scrimmage, Hardegree passed to receiver Nicholas Stuart for a TD.  Purchell's kick on the PAT gave USJ a 14-0 advantage with 8:24 remaining in the opening quarter.

Dresden received the Bruin kick-off and returned it out to its own 39-yard line.  On fourth down, the Lions were forced to punt on fourth down returning possession to USJ at the Bruin 39 yard line.  Seven plays later, USJ scored on a 40-yard pass from Hardegree to Danny Smigleski.  An attempted pass on the PAT fell incomplete to leave the Bruins with a 20-0 lead with 4:35 remaining in the first quarter.
