Westview rallies past Camden for win No. 5

By Andrew Pritchett

Sports Writer

Overcoming a 21-7 deficit the Westview Chargers bounced back and defeated the Camden Lions, 28-27 in Camden on Friday night in non-region action.

The Camden Lions received the kickoff and begun their first scoring drive from their 41-yard line.  The first play, Leon Williams swept around the left end and by-passed the defense on a 59-yard touchdown.  The extra point was good and the Lions led 7-0, 20 seconds into the game.

All was not right for the Chargers on their first possession.  After the kickoff, the Chargers begun their drive on the Charger 37-yard line.  Brian West gained nine yards but fumbled the ball where the Lion defense recovered.  The Lions marched into the red zone with the aid of an 18-yard pass from Spencer Perry to Chase Horton.  The drive was capped with a 15-yard run by Leon Williams, his second touchdown of the night.  The point after was good and the Lions led 14-0 with 9:40 remaining in the first quarter.

The Chargers received the kickoff at the 7-yard line and Harrison Moore ran the ball 93 yards for a touchdown.  With the point after, the Chargers cut the lead 14-7.

The touchdown motivated the Charger defense, after allowing two first downs, the Lion offense stalled and was forced to punt.  The Charger offense gained a first down during the next drive but after a sack and a penalty was forced to punt.  The punt was caught by Leon Williams and returned to the Westview 23-yard line.  The following play, Lion running back Andy Travis ran into the end zone.  With the point after, Camden led 21-7 with 2:16 left in the first quarter.

Gleason dominates Middleton 46-0 to snap three-game skid

By Jason Peevyhouse

Sports Editor

The Gleason Bulldogs snapped their three-game losing skid on Friday night, dominating the Middleton Tigers from start to finish to take a 46-0 win, also spoiling the Tigers homecoming in Middleton.

Gleason got on the board early as the Bulldogs were able to stop the Tigers initial drive.

After halting the Tigers and forcing them to punt, the Bulldogs went to work near midfield.  The first two plays of the drive were a hint of what was to come as Alex Verdell banged out runs of 14 and 12 yards.  Shadow Roney followed with a ground gain of 17 yards before Verdell capped the drive with an eight-yard touchdown run.  Roney added the two-pointer to give the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead with 7:05 left in the first frame.

The Tigers did not gain much on their next drive and it did not take the Bulldogs long to capitalize on that.  One play after the Tigers turned the ball over on downs deep inside their own territory, Cody Ezell broke free for a 31-yard touchdown run to make the score 14-0 with 4:40 left in the opening frame.

Much like the offense had just done, it took only one play for the Gleason defense to make a big play as Zach Wallace snagged an errant pass on the first play of the next Middleton drive to halt the Tigers advance.

Greenfield shuts out Gleason; Dresden holds off Trenton Bears

By Jason Peevyhouse

Sports Editor

Both the Greenfield Yellowjackets and Dresden Middle School Lions were victorious in junior high action last week as the Yellowjackets defeated Gleason 16-0 on Thursday night while Dresden held off a late Trenton rally to take a 30-22 win on Tuesday night.

Greenfield Yellowjackets 16

Gleason Bulldogs 0

All the scoring took place in the first half as Greenfield scored as time expired in the opening frame then added a second-quarter touchdown to take a 16-0 win over the Bulldogs at Gleason on Thursday night.

A 28-yard run by Blake Miller and a 35-yard scamper by Josh Ary set the tone for the Greenfield scoring drive as Ary capped the drive with a five-yard run as time expired in the opening frame.  Payton Page then found an open Hunter Dixon for the two-point conversion to make the score 8-0 at the end of the first frame.

Dresden Lions 30

Trenton Bears 22

With Dresden leading 30-6 in the final frame, Trenton scored two late touchdowns to make the game close.  However, Dresden was able to preserve the win.

After holding Trenton to a three-and-out, the Lions ate up most of the clock in the opening frame.  DMS put together a nine-play, 60-yard drive that was capped by a five-yard run by Gatlin Hatchel to put the Lions ahead 6-0 with 1:17 left in the opening frame.

Trenton was able to tie the game on their next drive, but the Lions responded with another lengthy drive.  This drive took half of the second quarter and covered 50 yards before a three-yard fun by Eric VanDyke broke the tie with 4:03 left in the half.  Davis Moran found an open Josh Bone for the two-pointer to give Dresden a 14-6 lead.
