Moore adds McElhiney to 2007-08 Lady Moc's staff

    Former Vanderbilt women's basketball standout, Ashley McElhiney, has been hired as an assistant women's basketball coach for the Chattanooga Lady Mocs, head coach Wes Moore announced Friday.

     "Ashley will be a tremendous asset to our program in a lot to program in a lot of areas," Moore said.  "She will be an energetic recruiter, a great coach for our guards and a great role model for all of our players."

     McElhiney, a four-year letter-winning performer at Vanderbilt University (1999-2003), was most recently an assistant coach at the University of Alabama after a one-year stint as the head coach of the Nashville Rhythm of the American Basketball Association.  She made history in that position by serving as the first female head coach of a men's professional basketball team.  McElhiney guided the Rhythm to a 21-10 record and a berth in the ABA playoffs in their inaugural season.

Baseball infielder makes OVC All-Freshman Team

    UT-Martin baseball player Shayne Martin of Lebanon was recently selected to the Ohio Valley Conference All-Freshman team.

     Martin, who played shortstop and third base, finished the season fourth overall for the Skyhawks with a .301 batting average.  He batted .278 in OVC play.  He started in 17 games and played in 29 of the Skyhawks' 55 games.

     Martin had 73 at bats with 22 hits, including two doubles and a triple.  He drove in six runs and had six multiple hit games.  He went 3-for-4 at the plate in an 11-8 victory of Belmont this season.

Men's basketball team signs forward from Polk CC

    UT-Martin head men's basketball coach Bret Campbell announced recently that he has signed Djero Riedewald, from Polk Community College in Winter Haven, Florida, to a national letter of intent.

     Riedewald is a 6-8, 215-pound forward.  He earned all-conference honors the past two seasons at Polk Community College where he played for Matt Furjanic.

     "Djero will add depth to our front line right away," Campbell said.  "He's very athletic and runs and the floor extremely well."

     Riedewald averaged 12 points and eight rebounds per game.  He shoots 56 percent from the field and 68 percent from the free throw line.
