Lady 'Dawgs dominate Scotts Hill to head to state |

After making numerous trips to the TSSAA Class A State Tournament during the 1990s, the Gleason Lady Bulldogs will finally return to Murfreesboro as the Lady Dawgs dominated the Scotts Hill Lady Lions from start to finish on Saturday night in substate action, taking a 43-19 win over the visiting Lady Lions. Gleason jumped out to a quick lead early in the opening frame as jumpers from Kayla Hudson and Candace Green gave the Lady Bulldogs a two-possession lead with 5:43 left in the first stanza. Scotts Hill struck back, getting a three-pointer from Kayla Knight to cut the lead to one point with just over five minutes left in the game. But, from then on, the Gleason defense proved to be impenetrable, as the Lady Bulldogs shut out the Scotts Hills girls for the remainder of the first frame. In the meantime, a pair of buckets from Hudson and a three-pointer from Riley Auvenshine built the Gleason lead to 11-3 at the end of the first frame. The Lady Dawgs carried that momentum over into the second half as three-point plays from Hudson and Green put the Gleason girls up by 14 points within the first minute of the second frame. From then on, Gleason controlled the pace of the game, as both offenses were silenced until a pair of Knight free throws broke Scotts Hill’s over five-minute scoreless spree, cutting the Lady Dawg lead to a dozen. But, Green answered that tally moments later with a deuce. Auvenshine followed with a jumper moments later and a pair of late free throws from Hudson pushed the Gleason advantage to a comfortable 23-5 at the end of the first half.

A strong second half by the Lady Indians doomed the Westview Lady Chargers on Tuesday night as Northside outscored the Lady Chargers 13-9 down the stretch to secure a 48-39 win in the championship game of the Region 7-AA Tournament at Gibson County High School. With the score tied at 20-20 at the break, an early jumper from Ciera Thomas gave the Lady Chargers the lead until a trey from Lavanda Ross and a jumper from Sequgyah Cliff gave the Lady Indians a 25-22 advantage with just over seven minutes left in the third frame. Amber Rechis followed with a jumper, but a second Cliff tally kept the lead at three points momentarily. Westview regained the lead midway through the frame as deuces from Rechis and Kenda Owens put the Lady Chargers ahead by one point with 5:12 remaining. However, a Cliff layup sparked an 8-2 run that was capped by a Gwen Delk deuce to put the Lady Indians ahead 35-30 at the end of the third frame. After a Delk jumper pushed the Northside lead to seven points to start the final frame, a three-pointer from B.B. Brooks, followed by an Owens tally cut the lead to 37-35 with just over six minutes left in the frame. But, a jumper from Delk and a three-pointer from Brittany Williams cancelled that tally out. After a pair of free throws from Thomas, Northside secured the win with a 6-2 run to end the game and capture the Region 7-AA title.

Gleason avenges losses to Lake County to win Region 7-A title |
|

Going into Wednesday night’s Region 7-A Championship game at West Carroll High School, the Gleason Lady Bulldogs could accomplish two things. While a win would secure the Lady Bulldogs a home substate game on Saturday night, the Gleason girls may have had payback on their mind. Earlier this postseason, the Lake County Lady Falcons ended the Lady Bulldogs chances of a perfect season with an upset win in the District 14-A Tournament. Also, this was the same team that ended the Lady Dawgs season in 2005-06. Lake County seemed to have that momentum going early in the first frame as three-pointers from Sarah Wallace and Renita Kinney helped the Lady Falcons jump out to a 7-2 lead. A jumper from Candace Green and a pair of free throws from Jenna Frazier cut the lead to one before a deuce from Melia Boyd made the score 9-6 with 3:42 left in the first frame. Class A Miss Basketball finalist Kayla Hudson stepped up, getting a layup and a three-point play to give the Lady Bulldogs a two-point lead with 2:30 left in the first frame. However, a pair of free throws from Tarrida Abbott and a freebie from Wallace put the Lady Falcons back on top. After a three-point play from Riley Auvenshine gave the lead back to Gleason a late trey from Mariah Matthews gave Lake County a 15-14 lead at the end of the first frame. It was all Gleason in the second quarter, though, as a layup from Taylor Stout and a three-point play from Auvenshine led to a Green trey to give the Lady Dawgs a seven-point lead. After a trey from Boyd broke up the Gleason scoring run, the Lady Bulldogs ended the first half with a pair of jumpers from Hudson and a late layup from Stout to take a 28-18 lead at the end of the first half.
