Lady Lions dominate LCHS Lady Falcons 11-1 |
By Jason Peevhouse Sports Editor
After playing a couple on the road close out last week, the Lady Lions came home and got a big win as an eight-run third inning proved to be the deciding factor in an 11-1 win by the Lady Lions on Monday afternoon in Dresden. Already leading 2-0 after two innings, the Lady Lions loaded the bases with one out on a walk to Courtney McMillin, a double by Lacie Kelley scored her freshman teammate. Megan McWherter reached on an error, Erica Glisson singled to load the bases. Back-to-back walks to Katherine Van Dyke and Melissa Burkeen put two more on the board. After a fielder’s choice created the second out, Dresden hurler Brooke Irvine helped her own cause with a three-run double to put the Lady Lions up by eight runs. After a Wade single, McMillin doubled in both runners to put the Lady Lions lead at 10-0 after three innings. Lake County got its only run of the game in the top of the fourth inning as Sarah Wallace singled to break up Irvine’s no-hit bid with one out, then scored on a grounder after advancing to third on a steal and a passed ball.

Dresden falls 10-7 to visiting Jackson Central-Merry |
By Rory Higgins Sports Writer |
In what can only be described as a slugfest, the Jackson Central-Merry Cougars were able to outlast the Dresden Lions in an offensive battle, taking a 10-7 win from the Lions on Friday night at Wilson Park. JCM got out of the blocks early in the first inning. With one out, three straight singles from the Cougars loaded the bases. After Ryan McPherson scored on a passed ball to break the scoreless tie, Ladd Caldwell reached on a two-run error that scored JaCory Parks and D.J. Long to put the Lions ahead 3-0 after the top of the first inning. Undeterred, the Lions came right back in the bottom of the first inning. A leadoff triple from Adam Turbeville was followed by an RBI single from Randy Williams. Wil Levister then followed with a two-run homer to tie the game. Later in the inning, Dresden took the lead with an RBI sacrifice fly from Justin Hatler, which scored Jacob Hatchel to make the score 4-3 after one inning. But, JCM answered in the top of the third inning as an RBI single from Parks tied the score. A passed ball then led to another Cougar run to make the score 5-4. JCM added another run in the top of the third inning as, for the third time in as many innings, a passed ball allowed another run to score. Colton Forrest scored on the error to make the score 6-4. Lady 'Jackets top GC, fall to Union, Milan |
Again playing an all-road slate, the Greenfield Lady ’Jacket tennis team is 1-2 on the year after their first three matches with Union City, Gibson County and Milan. The Lady ’Jackets defeated the Lady Pioneers but played well in losses to Union City and Milan. Greenfield got off to a rough start of the week on Tuesday, dropping a decision to Union City. The Lady Jackets winning their matches against Union City were Katie McCall at No. 1 singles and Meagan Porter at No. 3 singles. McCall beat Caitlin Kirkland 8-1 while Porter beat Sara Gilliam 9-8 (7-2 in the tiebreaker). Summer Hoke at No. 5 singles also played a good match before losing 8-5. The No. 1 doubles team of McCall/Mallory Robinson only lost their match 8-6, so we were very close to pulling what would have been a huge upset. On Wednesday, Greenfield then traveled to Trenton for a match with Gibson County. Since Gibson Co. only had three players, they could only play 3 singles and 1 doubles. We won all of those matches to record the shutout. McCall, Robinson, and Porter all prevailed in singles with Taren Hatcher and Summer Hoke teaming up to win the doubles point.
