Bethel College Baseball inks Dresden's Hatchel

Bethel College Head baseball coach, Glenn Hayes, and the Wildcat coaching staff added left-handed hurler, Jacob Hatchel from Dresden High School.  Hatchel plans on majoring in pre-pharmacy.

"I like it over here.  I think Bethel has a strong team," said Hatchel.  "I like the fact that my family and friends will be close enough to come see me play."

Hatchel was 8-0 on the mound this past season, working 59.1 innings and posted a 3.30 ERA.  For his career he was 17 and 3 with one save and a 4.83 ERA.  He is a control pitcher striking out 157 batters in his career.

Bethel has a young pitching staff and Coach Hayes thinks Hatchel will have the luxury of not being thrown right into a demanding role.  "I look for him to come in the fall and work hard with our coaching staff.  I think sometime between now and next year, he will be a contributor on the mound," said Hayes.

Simpson adds All-American to staff

UT-Martin has named Tom Keresztury as an offensive graduate assistant to work with the Skyhawk football team for the 2007 season.

Keresztury and Tennessee-Martin head coach Jason Simpson were both part of the Texas State University football organization back in 2002.  Simpson was the quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator while Keresztury was a freshman offensive lineman.

Keresztury spent last fall as a volunteer assistant at Angelo State University working with defensive linebackers.  He also spent time at Tyler Junior College in the spring of last year as an offensive line coach.

Former athletics director passes away

Former UT-Martin director of intercollegiate athletics Ray Mears died earlier this month in Knoxville after years of declining health.

"We're saddened to learn of Coach Mears' death, and we are appreciative of his years at UT Martin," said Chancellor Nick Dunagan.  "All of his Martin friends express deepest sympathy to the Mears family."

Mears served as athletics director from 1980-89.  He came to UT Martin following his legendary basketball coaching career at UT Knoxville.

During Mears' tenure at UT Martin, the school won its first Gulf South Conference championships, and several of the teams enjoyed national rankings.
