By Jimmy Gilliam
Special to the Enterprise |
The annual
Coca-Cola Point Guard Classic is a three-day event that
is held during Christmas break for the surrounding
schools and provides a chance for the teams to sharpen
their skills. A few of the teams have already met this
year in the regular season and some match-ups may
provide a look into the future as the TSSAA tournament
will begin soon.
Gleason Lady Bulldogs 54
Collinwood Lady Trojans 51
The undefeated Gleason Lady Bulldogs took on Collinwood
in the final game of the classic. Gleason’s ball control
and offensive sets seem to give Collinwood trouble as
the Lady Bulldogs gained an early lead. Collinwood
changed their defense and went to a full court press to
counter the Lady Bulldogs offensive prowess, and made a
run mid-way through the second quarter in an attempt to
cut into the Lady Bulldogs lead, however, Gleason
maintained a 22-18 lead over Collinwood at the break.
The Lady Bulldogs remained in the lead after three
quarters of play with the score 34-28 in favor of
Gleason. Collinwood outscored Gleason 19-13 in the
fourth quarter to force overtime. The Gleason Lady
Bulldogs held Collinwood to four points in overtime to
win 54-51 over Collinwood.
Kayla Hudson connected on four three-pointers and scored
33 points for the Lady Bulldogs followed by Riley
Auvenshine with eight points and Candace Green with six
points.
Abby Andrews and Hannah Bryant each scored 15 points for
Collinwood followed by Trista Carter with 10 points.
Collinwood Trojans 82
Gleason Bulldogs 36
Earlier in the evening, the Gleason Bulldogs took on the
Collinwood Trojans. Collinwood led 29-4 at the end of
the first quarter, 57-8 at the half, 67-18 after three
quarters of play, and won 82-36 over Gleason.
Byron Fuqua scored 15 points for the Bulldogs followed
by Colin Bennett with eight points.

The Lady Chargers were the lone
team to claim a win on the second night of the 42nd
Annual Martin Lions Club Christmas Tournament as they
defeated South Fulton. The Westview boys fell to
eventual tournament champion Franklin while Dresden’s
girls dropped a heartbreaker to Marshall County.
Westview Lady Chargers 52
South Fulton Devilettes 48
The Westview girls took another win Friday evening
against the South Fulton Lady Red Devils in the second
day of the 42nd Annual Martin Lion's Club Tournament at
Westview.
After a trifecta of threes early in the first quarter
from Dazarae Higgs, Rachel Lester, and Kendra Owens,
respectively, the Lady Chargers took and maintained a
lead they held throughout most of the game up until the
fourth quarter.
After a 20-10 opening stanza, Grace Ann Swaim opened up
the second with a trey and a couple freebies. South
Fulton's Chelsea Cox and Molly Ledbetter contributed to
hanging on in the 12-11 frame with Westview edging up a
bit on the scoreboard at halftime, 32-21.
The tone of the second half was a bit different from
the first, as the Lady Red Devils tied the game up by
the beginning of the third, though Westview quickly
rectified before the end of the game to win 52-48.

DHS girls, WHS teams sweep
through Lions Club first round |
By Rory Higgins

All three local teams got off to
a good start on Thursday, sweeping through the first
round of the 42nd Annual Martin Lions Club Christmas
Tournament.
Westview Chargers 71
Fulton City Bulldogs 51
In the final game of the first day of the
42nd Annual Lion's Club Christmas Tournament,
the Westview Chargers took on the Fulton City Bulldogs.
Leading in the first quarter, Fulton City succumbed to
a 19-point rally in the second quarter that gave
Westview a considerable lead by halftime, which they
kept to win the game that evening, 71-52.
As both teams went back and forth putting up points and
getting their feet wet in the opening stanza, Fulton
City's Barry Graves helped put in several shots to a
17-15 lead by the end of the first quarter, the lead
shaved off a bit only by a steal and subsequent layup
from Marcus Easley shortly before the quarter ended.
After a basket from Paul Gilkey to add to the Fulton
City scoreboard, Westview went on a roll, scoring 19
points straight with a few deuces from Derrick Elliott
sandwiched around three treys between Easley, Davelle
Lloyd, and Sylvester Boyd.
