By Jason Peevyhouse

With only a few games remaining on their slate in the 2006-07 season, Greenfield hosted Carroll Academy and dominated both the Jaguars and Lady Jags on Monday night at Greenfield.

The Yellowjackets jumped on the Jags early, then, after a brief outburst by Carroll Academy in the first frame, the ’Jackets dominated the final three quarters to take a 76-43 win over the Jags.

In girls’ action, the Lady ’Jackets took a 58-22 victory over the Lady Jaguars.

A strong first frame gave the ’Jackets all they needed to take the 33-point win over the Jags.

A three-pointer from Derek Laster just 11 seconds into the game sparked a 10-0 run that was capped by a Reggie McHaney trey with 6:24 left in the frame. Though the Jags would cut the lead to six points later in the frame, a pair of late deuces by Laster made the score 18-8 at the end of the frame.

Greenfield began to put the game out of reach late in the second frame as a jumper from Daniel Blackburn sparked a 12-2 run to end the half and give the ’Jackets a 38-16 lead at the break.

The ’Jackets put the game completely out of reach early in the third frame as a jumper from Cody Black sparked a 14-2 run to start the second half and build the Greenfield lead to 34 points. Greenfield continued to add to its lead in the frame, taking a 60-25 lead into the final stanza.

Greenfield got another 12-2 run in the final frame to seal the win for the ’Jackets.

Jerrick McMullin led the way for Greenfield with 14 points while Demetris Shearer added 13. Laster and Black each added 11 in the win. Alex Smith led CA with 16 points.

The Dresden Middle School Lions earned a split in their two tournament games on Saturday. After advancing with a 27-22 win over St. Augustine on Saturday morning, the Lions fell 47-43 in overtime to Dyer later that afternoon.

In girls’ action, the Lady Lions fell to host Medina 40-35.

Though the Lions were able to jump out to an early lead and maintain that late, a flurry of Eagle points in the final moments forced the extra frame.

Dresden led by eight points at the half and the Lions extended their lead further at the start of the third frame as Daniel Harris and Tyler Hawks each hit deuces to make the score 21-9 with 4:29 left in the frame. Though Dyer was able to cut into the lead some in the frame, a late Harris jumper made the score 25-17 at the end of the frame.

Dresden was able to keep the game at a multiple-possession deficit until a jumper from Michael Horton cut the lead to 33-31 with just over two minutes left in the frame. But, three free throws from Harris and a Hawks freebie seemed to give the Lions some padding on their lead. However, a three-pointer from William Harris followed by back-to-back buckets off turnovers by Tre Parker gave the Eagles a one-point lead with five seconds left in the game. But, a foul on the ensuing in-bounds pass sent Harris to the line where he hit one of two attempts to tie the game and force overtime.

Unfortunately for the Lions, that extra frame belonged to the Eagles, who opened the OT with a 6-2 run to effectively seal the win.

William Harris led Dyer with 18 points while Parker add 17.

By Jason Peevyhouse

Two four-game streaks ended on Friday night as Westview hosted perennial rival Gibson County. The Chargers, who had dropped four straight games coming into the night, snapped that streak with a 72-67 win over the Pioneers.

In girls’ action, the Lady Chargers saw their four-game winning streak end at the hands of the Lady Pioneers, who topped Westview 67-61.

Though the Chargers were able to build double-digit leads twice during the second half, the Pioneers would not falter, giving the Chargers all they could handle.

After a Jerome Donald jumper tied the game to start the second half, the Chargers briefly blew the game open as the Westview boys got treys from Marcus Easley, Kyle Reaves and Sylvester Boyd to help the Chargers outscore the Pioneers 15-4 over the next two minutes and build an 11-point lead. But, a pair of jumpers from Destin Skinner sparked a 9-0 run for the Pioneers to cut that lead to two points. Though an Easley trey ended that streak, the Pioneers were able to cut the lead down to 50-49 at the end of the third frame. The Chargers came out strong again in the final frame, opening the fourth stanza with a 9-0 run that was capped by a Reaves trey to give the Chargers a 59-49 lead with five minutes left in the game. Westview was able to maintain a sizeable lead until a jumper from Justin Spears sparked a 10-2 run that cut the lead down to one point. However, the Chargers were able to maintain their composure and outscore the Pioneers down the 9-5 down the stretch to seal the win.

Easley led Westview with 23 points. Boyd added 18 and Reaves tossed in 14. Spears led Gibson County with 25 points while Donald added 19, Josh Reaves added 11 and Skinner chipped in 10.
