Gleason girls dominate Lady Tigers; boys fall to Halls

By Jason Peevyhouse

After a slow start to the game on Tuesday night, the Gleason Lady Bulldogs put together a dominating performance on the defensive end, not allowing a field goal for the final 28 minutes of action on their way to a 50-11 win over the Halls Lady Tigers.

In boys action, the Tigers returned the favor, dominating Gleason 60-21.

Though the Lady Dawgs trailed after one frame, they did not allow anything but free throws the rest of the way to take the 39-point win over the Lady Tigers.

Gleason jumped out to an early lead with buckets from Jenna Frazier and Taylor Stout, but Halls answered back, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 7-2 to take a one-point lead at the end of the first frame.

The Lady Bulldogs came out firing in the second frame though.  A Stout jumper and a Riley Auvenshine trey opened the frame and gave the Lady Bulldogs a four-point lead, a Halls free throw cut the lead back to 11-8 with just over five minutes left in the first half.  After that, though, the Gleason offense erupted, as the Lady Dawgs went on a 14-0 run.  Gleason had a balanced attack over this run, getting three points from Ashley Coble, Kim Edenfield and Auvenshine to help the Lady Bulldogs take a 25-9 lead at the end of the first half.

Colonels march past UTM men

For the second time in three days the UT Martin Skyhawk men dug themselves into a deep hole and couldn't climb out in time to claim an Ohio Valley Conference basketball win on the road.

Eastern Kentucky jumped out to a 22-point advantage at half time and shut out the nation's leading scorer, Lester Hudson, in the first 20 minutes of play.  EKU claimed a 70-51 victory over the Skyhawks despite being out scored 37-34 in the second half.

"The bottom line was unfortunately we dug ourselves a huge hole with 10 turnovers and 2-for-9 from behind the arch in the first half," said Bret Campbell, the Skyhawks head coach.

Hudson scored 20 points in the second half to lead the Skyhawk scorers, while Djero Riedewald, last week's OVC Newcomer of the Week, tossed in 10 points.

UTM women fall to Eastern Kentucky

With leading scorer and leading rebounder Crystal Fuller out for a violation of team rules, the University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team was expected by some to struggle mightily against the perennial Ohio Valley Conference contender Eastern Kentucky.  While the Skyhawks did fall 64-54, their defense was able to hold the OVC's second leading scoring offense well below its nightly average and Phyllisha Mitchell posted a double-double with 18 points and 18 rebounds.  With the loss, UT martin falls to 3-7 overall and remains winless in the OVC at 0-3.  Eastern Kentucky improved to 6-2 on the year and 2-1 in conference play.

The game started with both squads trading baskets and it looked as if the Skyhawks shooting woes may have been behind them.  That was not the case though, as UT Martin then struggled to find the basket on a consistent basis the rest of the opening period, shooting only 27 percent from the field.
