Lions open 2007 slate with win over Yellowjackets |
The Dresden Lions and Greenfield Yellowjackets opened their
2007 gridiron seasons this past Friday night at Dresden's
Rotary Field. When the game was over, the Lions had
claimed their first win for the season under new head coach
Eric Knott, who happened to be a Greenfield alumni.
The Lions were able to pull out the 35-20 victory in the
second half of the contest as the two teams were tied up
14-all at the half.
The game got underway with Dresden kicking off to the
Yellowjackets. Greenfield began their first offensive
possession at their own 30-yard line and was forced to punt
after picking up only six yards. The Lions then began
their first offensive series at their own 27-yard line and
also punted on fourth down. Dresden's punt gave the
Yellowjackets possession around their own 20-yard line.
Greenfield then fumbled with Lion Tyson Wright recovering
the ball to give the Lions possession at the Yellowjacket
17-yard line. Four plays later, Dresden senior running
back Clay Adams scored the first touchdown of the season for
the Lions with a one yard run up the center of the line.
Dylan Nanney kicked the extra point to give Dresden a 7-0
advantage with 6:39 remaining in the first quarter.
During the scoring drive, quarterback Austin Evans carried
the ball for a nine-yard gain and Adams had an additional
gain of seven yards.
Greenfield received Dresden's kick-off and returned it out
to their own 32-yard line. The Yellowjackets moved the
ball to the Lions 47-yard line before being forced to punt.
Dresden took over at it's own 25 following the punt.
Four plays later, Greenfield's Colin Medlin intercepted an
Austin Evans pass at the 50-yard line and returned it to the
Lion's 25 before being dragged down. From the 25,
Chase McCullen ran for a 2-yard gain on first down followed
by a 20 yard run by quarterback Medlin. From the
three-yard line, McMullen got the handoff to score on a
sprint around the right side of the line. On the
points-after-attempt (PAT), Brett Perkins ran for two point
to give Greenfield an 8-7 advantage with 11:57 remaining in
the second quarter.

After a high-scoring start to Week 0
and the 2007 season, both the Gleason Bulldogs and Stewart
County Rebels saved some drama for the final frame as
Gleason held off a pair of late surges by the Rebels to take
a 28-26 win on Friday night in Gleason.
It was Stewart County that struck first though, as James
Hastings ran the opening kick-off of the night back 63 yards
to put the Rebels on the board just eight seconds into the
2007 season. Kris May added the extra point to give
Stewart county a 7-0 lead.
However, that score would not stand for long. The
Bulldogs looked impressive on their opening drive of the new
season. After a three-yard run by Shadow Roney, Alex
Verdell carried the ball back-to-back times for 11 and eight
yards respectively, taking Gleason to the Rebel 38-yard
line. From there, a 24-yard run by Cody Ezell set up a
six-yard pounding plunge by Verdell for the touchdown,
cutting the lead to 7-6 with 9:41 left in the first frame.

The Dresden Middle School Lions rebounded from their season
opening loss in a big way on Thursday night as they
dominated the Lakewood Eagles 30-6 in Paris.
It took only three plays from scrimmage for the Lions to
make it into the end zone as Eric Van Dyke capped the
opening drive with a two-yard touchdown plunge. David
Moran then found an open Gatlin Hatchel for the two-pointer
to make the score 8-0 with 7:03 left in the opening frame.
The Lions got on the board again later in the frame as a
five-yard run from Josh Bone capped a six-play, 34-yard
scoring drive. Hatchel added the two-point conversion to
make the score 16-0 with 55 seconds left in the first
quarter.
Dresden's starters got their third score of the game late in
the second frame. Setup by a 23-yard run by Van Dyke,
Moran scored on a quarterback sneak to make the score 22-0
with just under two minutes remaining in the half.
