Despite a strong start that saw the Lions take a 4-2 lead after the top of the second inning, the Mustangs got a run in the next two innings before they rallied in the bottom of the fourth with seven runs on the way to a 12-4 win over Dresden on Friday afternoon at the St. Jude Classic in Union City.
After a leadoff walk to start the game, Dresden’s battery mates put the Lions on the board as pitcher Wil Levister plated catcher Adam Turbeville to put Dresden ahead 1-0.
But, Huntingdon answered back in the bottom half of the first inning with a pair of runs. A leadoff single by Cody Crocker led to an RBI base hit by Cole McAdams. McAdams then scored on an error three batters later to give the lead to Huntingdon.
The Dresden offense continued to roll in the second inning as a double from DeMarco Hauhe plated Justin Hatler and Drew Vernon (who led off the inning with back-to-back singles). A fielder’s choice by Turbeville plated another run to put the Lions ahead 4-2.
The Mustangs again got on the board in the bottom of the second inning as Cody Crocker scored on a McAdams single to cut the Dresden lead to 4-3.
Huntingdon added another run in the bottom of the third inning as Brandon McCormick scored on an errant throw to third to tie the game at 4-4.
Huntingdon blew the game wide open in the bottom of the fourth inning. A pair of one-out RBI doubles from McAdams and Spencer Cliff put the Mustangs ahead by two runs. Later in the inning, two more doubles each plated two runs to cap off a seven run, six hit inning and put the Mustangs ahead 11-4.
The Mustangs scored their final run in the bottom of the fifth on a pass ball to spread their lead to eight runs.
