Gleason, Greenfield split marathon doubleheader

By Jason Peevyhouse

Sports Editor

Come-from-behind wins seemed to be the theme on Monday afternoon at Gleason as the Lady Bulldogs and Greenfield Lady ’Jacket softball teams squared off in a district doubleheader.

Greenfield, trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning of Game 2, scored a pair of runs in that frame to force extra innings. After the game remained tied through the sixth and seventh innings, the Lady ’Jackets were able to benefit from the tiebreaker rule – which placed a runner at second base to start the inning – to gain a 3-2 win after a wild throw allowed Greenfield runner Andrea Box to score the winning run.

Earlier, in the first game of the double dip, Gleason rallied in the bottom of the fourth inning which was capped by a three-run double from Riley Auvenshine to help the Lady Dawgs take a 5-4 win in the opening contest.

Like their opponents had done in the earlier game, Greenfield rallied to tie the game late, then won in extra innings to split with the Lady Bulldogs.

Gleason was able to get on the board first in the second game. A second-inning single from Breanna Wallace was followed two batters later by an RBI single from Amy Spain to give the Lady Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead.

Though the Lady Dawgs threatened in the top of the third inning, the Lady ’Jackets were able to get out of the jam, getting a groundout to end the threat.

Gleason was able to get on the board again in the fourth inning though, as Auvenshine reached on an error to score Spain (who had reached on a single) and put the Lady Dawgs ahead 2-0.

Dresden dominates Westview in non-district action

By Jason Peevyhouse

Sports Editor

For the second time in less than a week, the Dresden Lions scored six runs in the first inning on their way to a 10-2 thumping of rival Westview on Friday afternoon at the Martin Parks and Recreation Complex.

After singles from Adam Turbeville and Randy Williams to open the game, Colton Hickerson got an RBI base knock to plate one. Jacob Hatchel followed with a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0. After a single from Justin Hatler, Matt Clements got a double to put the Lions ahead 3-0. Drew Vernon added another single to plate two more and extend the lead to five runs before a single from Dwayne Bailey rounded out the scoring for the Lions and gave Dresden a 6-0 lead after the top of the first inning.

Dresden pushed its lead to seven runs in the top of the second inning when Chris Peeler scored on a passed ball to make the score 7-0.

Westview was able to get runs in the bottom of the second and third, but the Lions were able to put the game out of reach in the top of the fourth inning. Singles from Williams and Wil Levister set the tone for the inning. After Hickerson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Hatchel got a two-run single. Hickerson then scored on a passed ball to make the score 10-2 in favor of the visiting Lions.
