David Craig Moore
David Craig Moore, 48, of Palmersville, died Sunday,
September 16, 2007, at his home. Funeral services for Mr.
Moore were held Tuesday, September 18, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. at
Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in
Matheny Grove Cemetery near Palmersville. Bro. Gary Heath
officiated the services.
Mr. Moore worked construction and maintenance for the City of
Gleason and was a member of Lynnville Baptist Church in
Lynnville, Kentucky. He was a native of Wayne County,
Michigan.
Mr. Moore is survived by his wife, Mrs. Tina Kay Jackson
Moore of Palmersville; two sons, Justin Moore of
Palmersville, and Jared Moore of Palmersville; his parents,
Morton Russell and Marilyn Ruth Cobb Moore of Sedalia,
Kentucky; a sister, Drinda Zimmer of Lynnville, Kentucky;
two brothers, Dennis Moore of Canton, Michigan, and Darrel
Moore of Sedalia, Kentucky; his step-grandmother, Mrs.
Gladys Moore of Palmersville; and two grandchildren, Trevor
and Tristan Moore of Palmersville.
Freda Sue Harris Vassal
Freda Sue Harris Vassal, 69, of Dresden, died Sunday,
September 16, 2007, at Jackson Madison County General
Hospital in Jackson. Graveside services for Mrs. Vassal were
held Wednesday, September 19, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. at Rhodes
Chapel Cemetery in Lynnville, Kentucky. Bro. Donald Doster
officiated the services.
Mrs. Vassal was an office worker for Weakley County Rehab and
Nursing Center in Dresden and a member of Old Bethel Baptist
Church near Palmersville. She was a native of Palmersville
and the daughter of the late Thomas Roscoe Harris, Sr. and
Grace Evelyn Watts Harris. In addition to her parents, Mrs.
Vassal was also preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Angelo
Vassal.
Mrs. Vassal is survived by a daughter, Elaine (Danny)
Winstead of Ooltewh, Tennessee; a son, Michael Vassal of
Arlington Heights, Illinois; four sisters, Joyce Thedford of
Naperville, Illinois, Jeanette Brundige of Smyrna, Becky
Workman of Martin, and Terry Pachl of Collierville; a
brother, Thomas R. Harris, Jr. of Dresden; and four
grandchildren, Stephanie Winstead of Nashville, Danna,
Thomas, and Rebecca Winstead of Ooltewh.
Guy Earl Thomas
Guy Earl Thomas, 73, of Fulton, Kentucky, died Thursday,
September 20, 2007, at Parkway Regional Hospital in Fulton.
Funeral services for Mr. Thomas were held Wednesday,
September 26, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Hornbeak Funeral Chapel
in Fulton. Burial followed in Greenlea Cemetery in Fulton.
Rev. Cecil Maddox, Jr. and Rev. Leroy Brent officiated the
services.
Mr. Thomas was a retired machine operator for Turner Dairies,
where he was employed for 23 years. He was a United States
Navy veteran serving in the Korean War. Mr. Thomas was also
a member of the Jacksonville Freewill Baptist Church. He was
born October 13, 1933 in South Fulton to the late Earl
Woodland Lee and Lorraine Teague Thomas. In addition to his
parents, Mr. Thomas was also preceded in death by a son, Guy
Earl Thomas, Jr.
Mr. Thomas is survived by a daughter, Lorraine T. Pruitt of
Fulton; three sons, David Wayne Martin of South Fulton, Tony
Moody of Martin, and Fredrick Kerney of Union City; a
sister, Mrs. Freddie Hartsfield of Mayfield; eleven
grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
James Harold Lynch
James Harold Lynch, 50, of Martin, died Monday, September 17,
2007, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral
services for Mr. Lynch were held Thursday, September 20,
2007, at 2:00 p.m. at New Home Baptist Church. Burial
followed in Collier Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Scott Chadwick
and Rev. Rayland Smith officiated the services.
Mr. Lynch was a carpenter and a member of Obion Co. Saddle
Club. He was born December 16, 1956 in Obion County.
Mr. Lynch is survived by his wife, Brenda Lynch of Martin; a
daughter, Misty (Brent) Davidson of Union City; a son,
Benjamin (Julia Henderson) Lynch of Martin; two brothers,
Billy (Lola) Lynch of Union City, and Royce (Kathy) Lynch of
South Fulton; a grandson, Jonathan Davidson of Union City;
his father-in-law, Frank Fulcher of Martin; and his
mother-in-law, Sandra Fulcher of Martin.
Joseph F. (Joe) Bing
Joseph F. (Joe) Bing, 62, of Martin, died Thursday, September
20, 2007, at his home. Graveside services for Mr. Bing were
held Saturday, September 22, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. at Collier's
Cemetery in Martin. Mr. Bill Bing officiated the services.
Mr. Bing was retired from Frontier Communications. He was a
United States Marine veteran and a Baptist by faith. Mr.
Bing was born March 31, 1945 in Martin to the late Grover
Bing and Minnie Waldrup Bing. In addition to his parents,
Mr. Bing was also preceded in death by a brother, Grover
Bing, Jr.; and a sister, Carolyn Cobb.
Mr. Bing is survived by his wife, Mrs. Carol Broadway Bing of
Martin; two sons, David Bing (Rachelle) of Redmond,
Washington, and Rev. Scott Chadwick (Sandy) of Martin; two
daughters, Hope Jackson (Bradley) of Nashville, and Jennifer
Brown (Gordy) of Martin; three brothers, Billy Bing of
Brighton, Steve Bing of Union City, and Hiram Bing of
Hornbeak; a sister, Barbara Hansbrough of Troy; his
mother-in-law, Marie Broadway of Martin; and nine
grandchildren, Amy, Jessi, Jordan, Tanner, Madolyn, Jace,
Luke, Brooks, and Abigail Katherine.
Judith "Judy" Ann Cook
Judith "Judy" Ann Cook, 54, of Gleason, died Tuesday,
September 18, 2007, at her home. Graveside services for Mrs.
Cook were held Friday, September 21, 2007, at 12:30 p.m. at
Mt. Pelia Cemetery in Martin. Bro. Ryan Potts officiated the
services.
Mrs. Cook was a housewife and a Baptist by faith. She was
born in Weakley County to the late Roy and Estelle Stacks
Watson.
Mrs. Cook is survived by her husband, Mr. Larry Edwin Cook of
Gleason; a daughter, Christy Cooper of Gleason; three sons,
Carlon Shane Cook of Gleason, Michael Shawn Cook of Gleason,
and Samuel Edward Cook of Gleason; three sisters, Kathy Pope
of Gleason, Dianne Watson of Gleason, and Sandra Watson; a
brother, Dennis Watson; and three grandchildren.
Marie Dunn Nowlin
Marie Dunn Nowlin, 84, of Dresden, died Friday, September 21,
2007, at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. Funeral services
for Mrs. Nowlin were held Monday, September 24, 2007, at
11:00 a.m. at Southside Church of Christ in Dresden. Burial
followed in Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Bro. Tom Childers
and Adam Barker officiated the services.
Mrs. Nowlin was a nurse and coordinator of Lifeline
Bloodmobile Services and a member of Southside Church of
Christ in Dresden. She was a native of Dresden and the
daughter of the late Nathan Jackson "Jack" and Daisy L.
Finney Dunn. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Nowlin was
also preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Benjamin Nowlin.
Mrs. Nowlin is survived by four daughters, Judy (Charles)
Culver of Dresden, Connie (Richard) Killebrew of St. Louis,
Missouri, Robbie (Terry) Jackson of Franklin, Tennessee, and
Melinda (Jack) Barker of Palmersville; seven grandchildren;
and ten great-grandchildren.
Mary Sue Leach Vincent
Mary Sue Leach Vincent, 82, of Martin, died Sunday, September
23, 2007, at Methodist Hospital Central in Memphis. Funeral
services for Mrs. Vincent will be held today, Wednesday,
September 26, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist
Church. Burial followed in East Side Cemetery in Martin.
Rev. Bill Tate officiated the services.
Mrs. Vincent was a homemaker and a member of the First United
Methodist Church in Martin. She was a graduate of Milan High
School. Mrs. Vincent was born November 17, 1924 in Gibson
County to the late Felix Leach and Mary Lee Duke Leach. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Vincent was also preceded in
death by her husband, William J. (Cactus) Vincent; three
brothers, Bennett Leach, Thelbert Leach, and John Thomas
Leach; and a sister, GaNelle Mobley.
Mrs. Vincent is survived by a son, Richard (Dick) Vincent of
Indian Springs, Alabama; two daughters, Cynthia (Cindy)
White of Northport, Alabama, and Candace (Candy) Weaver and
husband, Patrick, of Northport, Alabama; seven
grandchildren, Courtney Vincent, Susanna Gobler, Caroline
Culpepper, Patrick Weaver, Jr., Candace Anne Weaver, Nancy
Catherine Weaver, and Madeleine Weaver; and seven
great-grandchildren, Brooks Gobler, Cove Gobler, Tate Gobler,
Camp Gobler, Vivi Gobler, North Hope Weaver, and Beckner
Culpepper.
Pauline Stockdale
Pauline Stockdale, 87, of Big Sandy, died Sunday, September
23, 2007, at Community Care of Rutherford County, Inc. in
Murfreesboro. Graveside services for Ms. Stockdale will be
held today, Wednesday, September 26, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. at
Benton Memory Gardens in Camden. Don McCulley will officiate
the services.
Ms. Stockdale was the former owner and operator of
Stockdale's Grocery with her former husband, T.E. Stockdale,
in Paris and Big Sandy in the late 1950's-1980's. She was a
member of Ramble Creek Baptist Church. Ms. Stockdale was
born March 28, 1920 in Dyer to the late Joseph Overbey and
Dollie Litten Overbey. In addition to her parents, Ms.
Stockdale was also preceded in death by three sisters and
three brothers.
Ms. Stockdale is survived by two daughters, Fay (Gerald)
Parham of Murfreesboro, and Barbara (Scott) Seale of
Richardson, Texas; a sister, Modine Scarborough of Dyer; a
grandchild, Jennifer (Aaron) Riddick of Cookeville; and a
great-grandchild, Connor Riddick of Cookeville.
Richard Steele
Richard Steele, 78, of Paris, died Wednesday, September 19,
2007, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. Funeral
services for Mr. Steele were held Saturday, September 22,
2007, at 2:00 p.m. at LeDon Chapel of Ridgeway Funeral Home
in Paris. Burial followed in Maplewood Cemetery in Paris.
Mike Jeffers officiated the services.
Mr. Steele was married July 23, 1950 to Martha Sue Oldham
Steele, who died May 12, 1998. He was an U.S. Army veteran
and former co-owner and sales representative for Custom Auto
Accessory Company in Memphis, which was the AC Delco
Distributor for the midsouth region. Mr. Steele graduated
from Gleason High School and UT Martin. He was a lifelong
member of Gleason First United Methodist Church and recently
attended Paris First United Methodist Church. Mr. Steele was
born November 13, 1928 in Gleason to the late Claude Steele
and Vernie Phelps Steele. In addition to his parents and
wife, Mr. Steele was also preceded in death by a brother,
Joe Steele, and his identical twin brother, Ellie Steele.
Mr. Steele is survived by a daughter, Susan (Pat) Woods of
Paris; a son, Stephen Steele of Paris; a sister, Martha
Sanders of Gleason; three grandchildren, Jason (April)
Steele of Sweetwater, Candice Bevil of Paris, and Shea
Steele of Nashville; and five great-grandchildren, Chloe
Steele, Kadence Steele, Ethan Steele, Luka Steele, and
Penelope Bevil.
Vertie Estelle Dilday
Vertie Estelle Dilday, 93, of Dresden, died Monday, September
17, 2007, at her home. Funeral services for Mrs. Dilday were
held Wednesday, September 19, 2007, at 3:00 p.m. at Bowlin
Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in Sunset
Cemetery in Dresden. Bro. Dennis Doster, Bro. Donald Doster,
and Bro. Vernon Smith officiated the services.
Mrs. Dilday was a housewife and a member of Davis Memorial
Baptist Church in Dresden. She was a native of Weakley
County and the daughter of the late Luke and Chestafidella
Gallimore Doster. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Dilday
was also preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Fred Lee
Dilday; three daughters, Shirley Gardner, Geneva Dilday, and
Mozelle Dilday; two sisters; and three brothers.
Mrs. Dilday is survived by three daughters, Doris Conder of
Paris, Sue Dilday of Dresden, and Patsy Cashion of Dresden;
two sons, Dewey Dilday of Dresden, and Hoyt Dilday of
Dresden; ten grandchildren; and twenty-five
great-grandchildren.
Virginia McGehee Tucker
Virginia McGehee Tucker, 93, of Martin, died Wednesday,
September 19, 2007, at Weakley County Nursing Home in
Dresden. Funeral services for Mrs. Tucker were held
Saturday, September 22, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. at Public Wells
Baptist Church in Martin. Burial followed in Public Wells
Cemetery. Rev. Joe Williamson officiated the services.
Mrs. Tucker was a homemaker and a member of the Church of
Christ. She was born July 31, 1914 in Weakley County. Mrs.
Tucker was preceded in death by her father, Joseph McGehee;
three brothers, Felix McGehee, Gilbert McGehee, and Wallace
McGehee; and three sisters, Ruth Erwin, Montieree Martin,
and Helen Simcik.
Mrs. Tucker is survived by five sons, Stanley Edwards of
Martin, Floyd Eugene Edwards of Sharon, Myron Edwards of
Rosemont, Illinois, Douglas Edwards of Rochester, Michigan,
and Joel Edwards of Chicago, Illinois; a daughter, Alice
Nunley of Chicago, Illinois; eighteen grandchildren;
thirty-one great-grandchildren; and five
great-great-grandchildren.
Walter "Tommy" Cruce
Walter "Tommy" Cruce, 75, of Canton, Michigan, died Thursday,
September 20, 2007, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in
Ypsilanti, Michigan. Graveside services for Mr. Cruce were
held Tuesday, September 25, 2007, at 3:30 p.m. at Obion
County Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Cruce was a supervisor for the Railroad Industry and a
veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean War.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Plymouth,
Michigan. Mr. Cruce was born February 11, 1932 in Obion
County to the late Richard and Maudie Burns Cruce. In
addition to his parents, Mr. Cruce was also preceded in
death by a son, Jeffrey Cruce.
Mr. Cruce is survived by his wife, LaVerne Cruce Smith of
Canton, Michigan; a daughter and son-in-law, Belinda and
Rickie Brockwell of Martin; two brothers, Will D. and wife,
Wilma Cruce, and Russell Cruce of Union City; and two
grandchildren, Shane and Lindsey Brockwell of Martin.
Wesley Bryant
Wesley Bryant, 77, of Greenfield, died Sunday, September 23,
2007, at his home. Funeral services for Mr. Bryant will be
held today, Wednesday, September 26, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at
Williams Funeral Home in Greenfield. Burial will follow in
Morris Cemetery in Greenfield. Jerry Taylor will officiate
the services.
Mr. Bryant was a factory worker for Martha White and attended
Trinity Lighthouse Church. He was born August 16, 1930 in
Trezevant to the late Robert Bryant and Rosie Crocker.
Mr. Bryant is survived by a sister, Ruby Morris of Michigan.
Willie Mae Cox Wilson
Willie Mae Cox Wilson, 98, died Saturday, September 22, 2007,
at the Bells Nursing Home. Mrs. Wilson was born on April 19,
1909 in Martin. She received her early education in the
Martin City schools, attended Abilene Christian University
and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree from George
Peabody College. She was the recipient of a national Lion
Oil scholarship for outstanding teachers, which she used to
complete her masters degree at Memphis State University.
Mrs. Wilson was a teacher. She began her teaching career in
Palmersville, and later taught at Sharon, Martin, and
Lexington High Schools. During her forty-two years in the
classroom, she was honored by being inducted into the
Tennessee Teachers Hall of Fame and chosen to be included on
the University of Tennessee's Education Wall of Honor. She
was a member of the Lexington Broad Street Church of Christ,
where she taught the Ladies Bible Class. After moving to
Jackson, she attended Skyline Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-four years,
Wilburn Blair (Bill) Wilson; her parents, Alfred T. and
Verna Cox; her sister, Lillian White; and a nephew, Joe W.
White.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Wilson Higgs and
husband, Dr. Bob Higgs; one grandson, Dr. Wilson Clark Higgs
and wife, Rachel; three great-grandsons, Wilson, William and
Wyatt Higgs; one niece, Pat White; and three great-nieces
and their families.
Graveside services were held Monday, September 24, 2007, at
11:00 a.m. at Eastside Cemetery in Martin. Conducting the
service was Ed Neal White and Charles Thomason.
