Charles William Johnson
Charles William Johnson, 80, of Gleason, died Monday,
September 24, 2007, at Jackson Madison County General
Hospital. Funeral services for Mr. Johnson were held
Thursday, September 27, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Tumbling Creek
Baptist Church. Burial followed in Rushing Memorial
Cemetery. Rev. Gene Price officiated the services.
Mr. Johnson was a retired GM Auto Worker and a member of the
Gleason Masonic Lodge and the Gleason Senior Citizens. He
was born August 26, 1927 in Gleason to the late John and
Debbie (Hayes) Johnson. In addition to his parents, Mr.
Johnson was also preceded in death by a son, Robert "Bob"
Johnson.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Katherine Ruth McDaniel
Johnson; a daughter, Rebecca (Becky) Young of Waterloo,
Illinois; a stepdaughter, Kathy Don King of Fulton,
Kentucky; a brother, Doug Johnson of Gleason; a sister, Lena
Suddath of Gleason; seven grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.
Claud Clifton
Claud Clifton, 90, of Martin, died Friday, September 28,
2007, at Volunteer Community Hospital. Services were held at
1:00 p.m. at the Gardner Church of Christ with Bro. Rick
Lawson presiding. Burial was at the Eastside Cemetery in
Martin. Murphy Funeral Home of Martin was in charge of
arrangements.
Mr. Clifton was born in Dickson, Tennessee, on April 20,
1917, the son of the late William Wesley and Josie Glasner
Clifton. He was preceded in death by one sister, Ada Glass,
and two brothers, Clayton and Jesse Clifton.
He lived in Dickson until joining the Army in March, 1944,
during World War II. His primary tour of duty was in the
European Theater and he participated in the Battle of the
Bulge with the 422nd Infantry. Four months were spent as a
Prisoner of War. Service decorations included the Bronze
Star Medal, POW Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern
Campaign Medal with two service stars and Combat
Infantryman's Badge.
After leaving the service, Mr. Clifton moved to Akron, Ohio.
He then returned to Dickson, working as a carpenter, until
moving to Martin in 1966. He first worked for Martin Machine
Works, Inc. and then Martin Tool and Die, Inc. He retired
from Martin Tool and Die in 2002.
Survivors include his wife, Alene Clifton of Martin;
daughter, Rebecca Davidson (Spydell) of Martin; and son,
Larry Clifton (Carolyn) of Birmingham, Alabama. Mr. Clifton
has five grandchildren: Mike Davidson and Greg Davidson of
Martin and Carrie Besse, Graham Clifton and Alan Clifton of
Birmingham, Alabama. Great-grandchildren include: Monica
Davidson, Dustin Davidson and Holly Davidson of Martin,
Emily Besse, Eric Besse, Jack Besse, Colin Clifton, Ryan
Clifton and MacKenzie Clifton of Birmingham, Alabama.
Edward Cole
Edward Cole, 72, of Dresden, died Sunday, September 30, 2007,
at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Memorial services
for Mr. Cole will be held at a later date in Albany, New
York.
Mr. Cole was born in Albany, New York to the late Charles H.
and Dora Groesbeck Cole. He was a retired maintenance
foreman for the Highway Department in Albany County, New
York. In addition to his parents, Mr. Cole was also preceded
in death by a daughter, Faith Cole; and four brothers,
Charles Cole, Jr., William Cole, Howard Cole, and Donald
Cole.
Mr. Cole is survived by a son, Edward Cole, Jr. of New York;
a sister, Alice Cole of Albany, New York; and a brother,
Gene Cole of Albany, New York.
Vera Louise Turbeville
Vera Louise Turbeville, 84, of the Pilot Oak Community, died
Wednesday, September 26, 2007, at Mills Health & Rehab in
Mayfield, Kentucky. Funeral services for Mrs. Turbeville
were held Thursday, September 27, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at
Jackson Funeral Home in Dukedom. Burial followed in Oak
Grove Cemetery in Dukedom. Bro. Will McSweeney officiated
the services.
Mrs. Turbeville was a member of the Pilot Oak Baptist Church
and was employed by the former Henry I. Siegel Clothing
Company for 17 years. She was also the owner and operator
for the former Dukedom Flower Shop. Mrs. Turbeville was born
June 23, 1923 in Dunklin County, Missouri to the late
Clarence A. and Hettie (Davis) Glover. In addition to her
parents, Mrs. Turbeville was also preceded in death by her
husband, Thomas Turbeville; a sister; and two brothers.
Mrs. Turbeville is survived by a daughter, Beverly Ezell of
Pilot Oak, Kentucky; two sons, Garry Turbeville and Jimmy
Turbeville, both of Pilot Oak; eight grandchildren; eleven
great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mavis Trevillion of San
Diego, California, and Jean Haleyburton of Maryland; and two
brothers, Paul Glover of Canada, and James Warren of Nimmons,
Alaska.
