Calvin Lee Perkins
Calvin Lee Perkins, 77, of Dresden, died Sunday, December 16,
2007, at Jackson Madison County General Hospital. Funeral
services for Mr. Perkins were held Tuesday, December 18,
2007, at 1:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden.
Burial followed in Mack's Grove Cemetery in Palmersville.
Bro. Wayne Perkins, Bro. Jim Barnhouse, and Bro. Roy
Auvenshine officiated the services.
Mr. Perkins was retired plant manager for Miller Country
Hams. He was a member and deacon at Mack's Grove Baptist
Church near Palmersville. Mr. Perkins was a native of
Dresden and the son of the late John Wesley and Nora
Josephine Peery Perkins. In addition to his parents, Mr.
Perkins was also preceded in death by two infant sons; and
two sisters, Bonnie Crocker and Mary Jane Perkins.
Mr. Perkins is survived by his wife, Mrs. Betty Jeannette
McGhee Perkins of Dresden; two daughters, Chip (Gene) DeFeo
of Searsport, Maine, and Gail (Ed) Barton of Birmingham,
Alabama; a son, Phil (Melanie) Perkins of Gadsden,
Tennessee; two sisters, Virginia (Billy) Verdell of Gleason,
and Lucille Prince of Sharon; two brothers, Wayne (Linda)
Perkins of Greenfield, and James (Melba) Perkins of Paris;
and three grandchildren.
Charles Ronald (Ronnie) Travis
Charles Ronald (Ronnie) Travis, 65, of Martin, died Monday,
December 17, 2007, at Volunteer Community Hospital in
Martin. Funeral services for Mr. Travis were held Thursday,
December 20, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at Murphy Funeral Home
Chapel in Martin. Burial followed in East Side Cemetery.
Rev. Scott Penick officiated the services.
Mr. Travis was retired from the University of Tennessee at
Martin. He was a member of Ralston Baptist Church and a
graduate of Martin High School. Mr. Travis was born
September 8, 1942 in Weakley County to the late Charles
Fielden Travis and Louise Chappell Travis. In addition to
his parents, Mr. Travis was also preceded in death by his
wife, Paula Harris Travis; and a granddaughter, Faith Renae
Travis.
Mr. Travis is survived by a son, Trent Travis of Dresden; a
daughter, Lisa Hollowell of South Fulton; a brother, Mike
Travis of Martin; and four grandchildren, Thomas Travis,
Jacob Milam, Jonathan Hollowell, and Joshua Hollowell.
Gary McAlister
Gary McAlister, 55, of Greenfield, died Tuesday, December 18,
2007, at Jackson Madison County Hospital. Funeral services
for Mr. McAlister were held Thursday, December 20, 2007, at
2:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Greenfield. Burial
followed in Highland Cemetery in Greenfield. Bruce McCartney
and Mark Abbott officiated the services.
Mr. McAlister was a machine set-up operator for Leland Powell
for over 30 years and he attended the First Baptist Church.
He was born October 14, 1952 in Greenfield to the late
George Glen McAlister and Lois Ann Knott McAlister.
Mr. McAlister is survived by his wife, Juanita McAlister of
Greenfield; a son, Cary McAlister of Hermitage, Tennessee; a
daughter, Monica McAlister of Greenfield; a stepson,
Jonathan Davidson of Milan; a sister, Sandra Barker of
Greenfield; and a brother, Steve McAlister of Medina.
Jewell Hester Damron Green
Jewell Hester Damron Green, 93, of Martin, died Wednesday,
December 19, 2007, at Volunteer Community Hospital in
Martin. Funeral services for Mrs. Green were held Friday,
December 21, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in
Martin. Burial followed in Martin Memorial Gardens. Rev.
Bill Tate and Chaplain Anisa Evans officiated the services.
Mrs. Green was retired from Kellwood Manufacturing Company
and was a member of Campground Methodist Church. She was
born November 7, 1914 in Weakley County to the late Walter
Ollie Hinton Hester, Sr. and Martha Elizabeth Todd Hester.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Green was also preceded in
death by two husbands, George Damron and Albert Green; three
brothers, Guy A. Hester, Gay Hester, and Walter Ollie Hinton
Hester, Jr.; three sisters, Jackie Irene Griffin, Lois
Carmen Tyson, and Inez Carmack Hazlewood; and a grandson,
Eric Evans.
Mrs. Green is survived by two daughters, Brenda Evans of
Martin, and Marsha Gallardo of Lexington, Tennessee; three
grandchildren, Anisa K. Evans, Brian K. Evans, and Ashley L.
Woods; and two great-grandchildren.
Lavelle Byars
Lavelle Byars, 93, of Dresden, died Tuesday, December 18,
2007, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral
services for Mrs. Byars were held Friday, December 21, 2007,
at 11:00 a.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home in Dresden. Burial
followed in New Hope Cemetery in Latham. Bro. Donald Doster
officiated the services.
Mrs. Byars was a retired waitress and a member of New Hope
Baptist Church in Latham. She was a native of Weakley County
and the daughter of the late Samuel and Ludie Barber Maxey.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Byars was also preceded in
death by her husband, Mr. Robert Byars; a sister, Hedie Bell
Maxey; and a brother, Malcolm Maxey.
Mrs. Byars is survived by a daughter, Lyska Byars of Dresden.
Mary Powell McClanahan
Mary Powell McClanahan, 81, of Palmersville, died Friday,
November 29, 2007, in Palmersville.
Born February 25, 1926 in Holland, she is the daughter of the
late James Franklin Powell and Ola Mae Sample Powell. She
was also preceded in death by one sister, Verna Howell; and
eight brothers, J.R. Arnold, Ed, Rachel, Hershall, Hillard,
Truman, and Clifford. Mrs. McClanahan was united in marriage
to Charles McClanahan, whom preceded her in death.
She was a garment factory worker and of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. McClanahan leaves three sons, John Franklin Arnold of
Springville, Tennessee, Clifford Phillip Arnold of
Greenville, Texas, and Joe David Arnold of Dresden; two
daughters, Mary Beverly Arnold of Dresden, and Vivian Lee
Arnold of Springville; one brother, Bobby Powell of Steele;
thirteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services for Mrs. McClanahan were held at 11:00 a.m.,
Saturday, December 1, 2007, at the Powell Funeral Home
Chapel in Steele with Rev. Michael Funderburk officiating.
Burial was at the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Steele.
