Alvie Mason Harris
Alvie Mason Harris, 75, of Palmersville, died Sunday,
August 12, 2007, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin.
Funeral services for Mr. Harris will be held today,
Wednesday, August 15, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Union Chapel
Church of Christ in Palmersville. Burial will follow in
Morgan Cemetery.
Mr. Harris was retired from ANR Pipeline as a
maintenance engineer.
Mr. Harris is survived by his wife, Betty Jane Grubbs
Harris of Palmersville; two sons, Kerry M. Harris of
Dresden, and Benji C. Harris of Sharon; and a sister, Joanne
Schaffer of Paducah, Kentucky.
Doris Ann Brown
Doris Ann Brown,60, of Smyrna, died Friday, August 10,
2007, at her home. Funeral services were held Monday, August
13, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church with
Bro. Paul Merwin officiating. Burial followed in the church
cemetery.
Mrs. Brown was a member of the River of Life Church in
Smyrna and had worked for Nissan.
She is survived by her husband, Jimmy Brown; mother,
Doris Lane of Gleason; five children, Danny (Barbara) Lipps,
Tony Brown, Debbie (Allen) Merritt, Peggy (Scott) Zdeb, and
Debbie McDonald; a brother, John (Patty) Lane, Jr.; four
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by her father, John Lane Sr.
Howard Lorenzo Billingsby
Howard Lorenzo Billingsby, 90, of Dresden, died
Tuesday, August 7, 2007, at Volunteer Community Hospital in
Martin. Funeral services for Mr. Billingsby were held
Saturday, August 11, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Hatlers Chapel
Church of Christ in Dresden. Burial followed in Hatlers
Chapel Church Cemetery in Dresden. Bro. Charley Arnett
officiated the services.
Mr. Billingsby was a retired farmer and a veteran of
World War II serving with the United States Army. He was a
member of Hatlers Chapel Church of Christ and the Dresden
American Legion. Mr. Billingsby was born in Latham to the
late Gilbert L. and Ida Mae Crosser Billingsby. In addition
to his parents, Mr. Billingsby was also preceded in death by
his wife, Mrs. Gladys Elizabeth Laws Billingsby; a sister,
Annie Lou Story; and two brothers, Flavil Billingsby and
James Billingsby.
Mr. Billingsby is survived by three daughters, Brenda
(Danny) Scearce of Dresden, Donna (Joe) Hatler of Dresden,
and Sandra (Richard) Walker of Martin; three sisters,
Pauline Walker of Martin, Reggie Roney of Gallatin, and Sue
Harper of Franklin; a brother, John Billingsby of Dresden;
and six grandchildren, Robert and Ryan Scearce, Jodie Hatler
Menees, Julie Hatler Russ, Justin Hatler, and Brian Walker.
Jeremiah Eric "Jerry" Blades
Jeremiah Eric "Jerry" Blades, 29, a package handler for
United Parcel Service and delivery driver for D'Angelo's
Produce, died Monday, August 6, 2007, at Our Lady of the
Lake Regional Medical Center. He was a resident of Baker and
a native of Baton Rouge. Mr. Blades was a 1996 graduate of
Dresden High School.
Memorial services were held on Thursday, August 9,
2007, at 7:00 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home.
Survivors include his mother, Vanessa Zito of Quinlan,
Texas; paternal grandparents, Royal "Roy" and Jackie Blades
of Baker; maternal grandmother, Ruby Zito of Quinlan;
sister, Gabrielle Blades of Central; nephew, Eric Hyde; and
numerous cousins.
Mr. Blades was preceded in death by his father, Glynn
Eric Blades; and maternal grandfather, Frank Zito.
Lucille Coley Bell
Lucille Coley Bell, 93, of the New Home Community in
Martin, died Sunday, August 12, 2007, at VanAyer Manor
Nursing Home in Martin. Funeral services for Mrs. Bell will
be held today, Wednesday, August 15, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. at
Murphy Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will follow in East
Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. David Price and Rev. Scott
Chadwick will officiate the services.
Mrs. Bell was a homemaker and a member of New Home
Baptist Church. She was born October 25, 1913 in Obion
County to the late Will Coley and Lelia Hansbrough Coley. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Bell was also preceded in
death by her husband, Willie Artell Bell; a brother, Roy
Coley, Sr.; and a sister, Bertie Coley Haley.
Margaret Ann Martin Harpole
Margaret Ann Martin Harpole, 76, wife of Dr. David
Harold Harpole, of Richmond, Virginia, formerly of Martin,
died Friday, July 20, 2007, in Richmond. She was born on
November 13, 1930, a native of Martin, and the daughter of
the late Luella Hefley Martin and John Marshall Martin, Sr..
The town of Martin was named for her great-grandfather,
William Martin.
Mrs. Harpole was a third generation alumni and graduate
of Vanderbilt University and a former school teacher. She
was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution for
over 40 years and held various offices and served on the
board of her chapter. She was a member of the National
Society of the Colonial Dames of American, and had served as
a docent at Wilton House Museum in Richmond for over 10
years. She belonged to the Jamestowne Society, the Huguenot
Society of Virginia, the Daughters of the Cincinnati, and
other genealogical, historical, religious, cultural, and
charitable organizations. She belonged to River Road United
Methodist Church, and was a lifelong Methodist. She and her
husband had previously lived in Roanoke, Virginia for 31
years before moving to Richmond in 1993.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a
daughter, Lillian Harpole Hazelton and son-in-law, Merle C.
Hazelton of Richmond; a son, Dr. David H. Harpole, Jr. and
daughter-in-law, Dr. Linda H. Harpole of Durham, North
Carolina; six grandchildren; a brother, John M. Martin, Jr.
and his wife, Dorothy Shands Martin.
A memorial service was held at River Road United
Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, 2007. A
family graveside memorial service was held Saturday, August
18, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev.
Bill Tate officiated the service.
