Iris Festival hosts Fairy Tale Feast

By David Fisher

Staff Reporter

Dreams really can come true; at least they did for those area youngsters lucky enough to take part in this year’s Iris Festival Fairy Tale Feast.

A host of fictional characters were on hand to entertain a large group of youngsters at this year’s Fairy Tale Feast, which was held Thursday afternoon in the fellowship hall at First Methodist Church in Dresden.

The children got a chance to meet and have their photos taken with such storybook characters as Mother Goose, portrayed by Golden Iris winner Mary Myrick, who is a former elementary school teacher. She read stories from her Mother Goose book, much to the delight of her tiny audience.

All of the other characters were played by Dresden High School students from the Dresden Drama Club, who generously donated their time and talents to entertain the large group of highly excited youngsters. The actors included: Amanda K. Vogel, who was very convincing in playing the part of Cinderella; the lovable Scarecrow in search of a brain, straight from the Land of Oz, was portrayed by Jacob Datchel; the highly popular comic book, cartoon and movie hero Spider-Man was portrayed by Adam Turbeville, who attracted a lot of attention from his little fans; the Power Rangers, played by Matt Pittman and Matt Hewett were also very popular with the youngsters; The Little Mermaid, portrayed by M.J. Mayo posed with a lot of the little girls at the event, who were dressed in their gowns and wanted to get their photos taken with her; the cartoon character Shrek, portrayed by Jay Morgan, along with his cartoon character sweetheart, Princess Fiona, played by Misty Essary were also very convincing; Princess Jasmine from the cartoon movie “Aladdin” was played by Alex Johnson; and Dresden H.S. student Brandon Schultek played the part of a news reporter, or was he really Superman traveling incognito as the mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent.

In addition to the exciting time the children had mingling with their favorite fictional characters and playing various games, they also enjoyed the food provided by the event’s sponsors – Gingerbread Junction, Mainstreet Munchkins, and Little Ones Daycare.

Chairperson for the Fairy Tale Feast is Suzanne Obetz, along with the daycare sponsors and other volunteers, all helped make the event a huge success. Rep. Mark Maddox and Dr. Jimmy Moss helped out by providing goodie bags, and Special Occasions costume shop of Jackson gave the event organizers a good deal on renting the costumes.

Martin bus driver cited for driving in wrong lane following two-vehicle crash

The driver of a school bus has been cited for driving in the wrong lane, following a two-vehicle accident last week.

According to a report filed by Officer Marty McClure of the Martin Police Department, the accident took place at approximately 7:34 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1, when C.T. Hill, 47, of 326 Redbud Circle in Martin, who was driving a 2000 International school bus owned by the Weakley County Department, attempted to turn right onto Pleasant Hill Road as he was pulling out from the rear driveway at Westview High School.

The report states that Hill told the officer he was directly behind another school bus as he was making a right turn onto Pleasant Hill Road when the accident occurred.

Aaron S. Cooper, 27, of 109 Dogwood Lane in Martin, said that he was traveling south on Pleasant Hill Road in his 2007 Honda, and came to a stop for the first bus as it pulled onto Pleasant Hill Road traveling north. Cooper said he then continued south as soon as the first bus cleared his lane of traffic, and that’s when the second bus, driven by Hill, pulled across his lane and hit him in the driver’s side.

Based upon the statements of those involved and the evidence at the scene of the accident, Officer McClure determined that when the bus driver crossed the center line while making a right turn, it caused the collision between the bus and the southbound vehicle driven by Cooper.

School Board approves second reading of policy revision

By David Fisher

Staff Reporter

Members of the Weakley County School Board approved the second reading of a revised school board policy manual, the hiring of a volunteer coach, and several assorted field trips, during Thursday night’s regular monthly meeting held at Sharon School.

School Policy Revision

The School Board approved the second reading of a revision to its official school board policy manual, based on the recommendation of the policy committee.

The policy changes deal with section three of the policy manual concerning support services.

According to Supervisor of Instruction for grades 6-12 Debbie Doster, the policy revisions concerning support services is part of an overall and ongoing updating of the entire six-part School Board policy manual that started three years ago. This involves deleting outdated policies, adding new policies, and making revisions to some existing policies as needed. Sections one and two have already been updated, and the latest revision to section three dealing with support services is now also updated. This leaves three additional sections to be revised in coming months, as time allows.

Doster states that much of the revision in section three dealt with changing policy numbers in order to bring the local School Board manual in line with the numbering system now used by the Tennessee School Board Association, which has changed since the school board policy was last revised around 2000.

Some of the policies in the support services section, such as those dealing with fire drills, tornado drills, bomb threats, maintaining a drug-free and tobacco-free workplace, etc., were already included in other sections of the manual under a different title and a different number, and were, therefore, eliminated not because they were obsolete, but to avoid duplication.

“We’ve already started the process on section four, which is much more detailed,” Doster said. “It gets into the actual instructional process. It’s a bigger section, with lots of policies, and it may take us awhile to get through it.”

Doster stated that the School Board Policy Manual Committee, composed of school board members Dr. Gordon Morris, Sarah Ann Pentecost, Barbara Trentham, and Jeff Perkins normally meet an hour prior to each school board meeting to work on updating the policy manual. Doster noted that she, along with Director of Weakley County Schools Richard Barber and Supervisor of Federal Programs Doug Braden also meet with this committee.
