WCSD searching for three suspects following home invasion
and armed robbery |
Area law enforcement officials are searching for three,
possibly four white males in connection with a home
invasion, kidnapping and armed robbery last week just south
of Greenfield.
On Friday, March 23, the Weakley County Sheriff’s Department
received a 911 call stating that an armed robbery had
occurred at the Akin and Porter Produce Company in
Greenfield.
Officials say the suspects came into contact with Joe Porter
at his residence outside of Greenfield and forced him to
drive them to his trucking business in a stolen Cadillac
Escalade. Three victims were bound at the produce company.
However, they were able to free themselves after the
suspects left the scene. The victims received minor
injuries, but did not require medical attention.
An undetermined amount of cash was taken in the robbery.
Authorities alerted area law enforcement officials
immediately about the stolen Cadillac Escalade registered to
the trucking company in Greenfield. The vehicle was equipped
with OnStar and was traceable. It was located near the crime
scene. A stolen blue Ford Explorer was found in Dresden.
Investigators questioned
numerous witnesses throughout the day Friday in connection
with the case.

Jimmy Westbrook named Iris Festival 'Citizen of the Year' |
|
By David Fisher Staff Reporter |
James Westbrook, known by his many friends and acquaintances
simply as “Jimmy,” has been selected as the Iris Festival
Citizen of the Year for 2007. His professional expertise and
desire to serve his community and make it a better place to
live has been abundantly demonstrated over the years by his
involvement in local government and community organizations,
which have earned him the respect of all who have had the
privilege of knowing him.
Jimmy Westbrook is one of the longest serving members of
county government. First elected as a member of the Weakley
County Quarterly Court in 1974, he continues to serve as a
county commissioner, leaving the position for one term
during that 30-year span. Commissioner Westbrook has worked
as an auditor and audit supervisor with the Division of
County Audit of the State Comptroller's office for 10 years,
served for 13 years as executive director of the UT County
Technical Assistance Service and another 14 years as
executive director of the Tennessee County Highway Officials
Association before his retirement in 2002. Westbrook was the
second director of CTAS after joining the staff after it was
created in 1973. He was the first director of TCHOA when the
organization was created in January 1988.
In addition to
serving on the Transportation Committee for the National
Association of Counties, Westbrook serves on the Weakley
County Commission as chair of the Health, Education, Economy
Development Committee and the Rules Committee. He also
serves on the body's Finance, Ways, & Means Committee and
the Financial Management Committee. Additionally, he is
chairman of the Weakley County Economic Development Board.

Dresden Industrial Development Board establishes Retail
Development Committee |
|
By David Fisher Staff Reporter |
In order to address the need for attracting retail
businesses to Dresden, members of the Dresden Industrial
Development Board voted Thursday to establish a Retail
Development Committee with the sole focus of bringing
retailers to the area. The board also approved the purchase
of a lawn mower to keep the Dresden Industrial Complex
mowed, and the organization’s amended budget.
Retail Development Committee
Dresden Mayor Danny Forrester said that while industrial
development is very important to bringing jobs to Dresden
and Weakley County, retail trade should not be overlooked in
the city’s quest for providing employment opportunities to
its citizens. It was also noted that the bulk of sales tax
revenue in the city comes from retail businesses.
So, while the Dresden Industrial Development Board will
continue to market Dresden and Weakley County to potential
industries, it will now have a committee with the specific
task of seeking and recruiting retail businesses.
The membership of
this committee has yet to be decided; but board members did
say that it could be composed of citizens in the community
other than members of the Dresden Industrial Board.
