Goodyear strike ends; union members return to work

After 12 weeks of being on strike, members of the United Steelworkers Union approved a contract with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company Friday, with workers expected to begin returning to work on Monday and Tuesday.

When the union’s three-year contract ended in July of 2006, a new contract had not yet been negotiated. After months of contract negotiations between Goodyear and the union failed to result in a contract agreement, the strike got underway at noon on Oct. 5. At that time, union members walked out of the local plant in Union City.

The negotiations finally resulted in an agreement ironed out last Wednesday, which was then ratified by a majority of the union members on Friday.

Goodyear officials say the company expects to realize substantial cost savings as a result of a master contract ratified Friday by members of the United Steelworkers union. Provisions of the three-year contract provide Goodyear with the ability to achieve up to $610 million in cost savings over its term and $300 million a year in ongoing savings. Compared with 2006 pre-strike levels, savings are expected to total $70 million in 2007, $240 million in 2008 and $300 million in 2009.

Union City man killed, three others injured in two-vehicle accident

A two-vehicle accident left a Union City man dead and three others injured, including a Dresden man and two Cordova women.

According to a report filed with Tennessee Highway Patrol dispatch in Memphis, the crash took place at approximately 6:10 p.m. on Friday, December 22, on Highway 45 East at Brundige Road near South Fulton, when a 1993 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Randel Gatewood, 48, of Dresden, collided with a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by Dana Sowash, 27, of Cordova.

The report states that Gatewood was eastbound on Brundige Road and was trying to cross Highway 45 East when he pulled his car into the path of a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by Dana Sowash, 27, of Cordova, who was northbound on Highway 45 East.

The front of Ms. Sowash’s vehicle struck Gatewood’s car on the passenger side door, causing her vehicle to rotate clockwise before coming to rest facing south on Highway 45 East. As a result of the crash, Gatewood's vehicle rotated clockwise and came to rest facing south on the east shoulder of the road.

Billy Joe Grogan, 44, who was a passenger in Gatewood’s car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gatewood was transported by helicopter to Regional Medical Center in Memphis for treatment.

Thomas Wayne Fisher celebrates 100 years

Last Thursday, Thomas Wayne Fisher celebrated 100 years of life. Friends, colleagues, family, and acquaintances attended the celebration at Fisher’s new home at Lakeside Retirement Center in McKenzie.

A former Dresden mayor, trustee of the University of Tennessee, superintendent of Weakley County Schools, principal of Palmersville and Sharon high schools, and Weakley County clerk and master, and WWII veteran has had a highly successful and decorated career.

Fisher was all smiles as he greeted his guests one-by-one in a receiving line. Friends from the area shared memories with Fisher. Joining the celebration were Fisher’s daughter, Sherry Tarwater of Huntingdon, his sister, Mildred Clarke of Knoxville, and brothers, Russell Fisher of Kingsport and Warner Fisher of Queen’s Creek, Arizona.

Carroll County Mayor Kenny McBride presented a proclamation declaring December 28, 2006 as Thomas Wayne Fisher Day in Carroll County. A proclamation by Governor Phil Bredesen presented the Centennial Award to Fisher.

Fisher is still active – mentally, spiritually, and physically. McBride said he enjoys seeing Fisher at Mallard’s Restaurant with his daughter. Sherry said her father still charts the stock market and keeps up with events.
