Gleason gets first win of
'06 over South Fulton |
By Rory Higgins
Sports Writer |
Gleason's
first win of the season came not a game too soon, as
their 30-12 victory over the home team South Fulton Red
Devils they visited Friday night bumped their record to
1-2.
Strong defensive stops from Gleason's Edward Torres and
Tyler Verdell, as well as South Fulton managing to hold
back the Bulldogs for a couple turnovers, kept both
crowds in anticipation Friday evening, despite yardage
gains from Alex Verdell, in two separate possessions in
the stanza, keeping the two lines on the South Fulton
side of the field most of the quarter.
However, the Red Devils were able to hold back the
Gleason offensive efforts enough to keep the scoreboard
blank, even getting the ball at the Gleason 34-yard line
as a result of a fumbled snap for a Bulldog punt.
South Fulton had control of the ball on the last play of
the stanza, but this did not last long as a fumble on
South Fulton's part was recovered by Gleason's Ben
Sumner at the Gleason 47-yard line.
From there, this opened up the second quarter with
control of the ball for Gleason. The Bulldogs made the
most of this opportunity with a 51-yard touchdown pass
from Zac Wallace to Byron Fuqua at 10:14 in the period.
Torres successfully ran for the two extra points, so
Gleason was now in the lead, 8-0.
South Fulton struck back about five minutes later,
after they regained possession of the ball after a punt
when the ball touched a Gleason player as it came down
and was recovered by a South Fulton player at the
Gleason 45-yard line. After some struggle to push
downfield, three Hunter Harris passes to Corbin Hawks
earned South Fulton a touchdown at 5:01. South Fulton's
two-point conversion was no good, keeping the Bulldogs
in the lead going into the half, 8-6.

Westview loses
heartbreaker to Huntingdon Mustangs 14-10 |
By Ernie Smothers
Special to the Enterprise |
One week after sustaining a disappointing non-region
loss to Camden, a determined Huntingdon Mustang squad
earned a crucial come-from-behind region victory over
favored Westview.
Huntingdon quarterback Cody Crocker (eight completions,
134 yards, two interceptions) playing brilliantly
despite suffering with a flu-like stomach virus, was
aided on offense by Brandon McCormick (two catches, 64
yards including a 46-yard touchdown reception / run) and
Colton Dill (two-yard touchdown reception). DeAngelo
Sherrill (12 rushes, 86 yards) spearheaded the Mustang
ground attack. Huntingdon standout running back Chris
Donald, keyed on by the Charger defense the entire first
half, left the contest early in the third quarter after
sustaining a hamstring injury and was unable to return.
The aggressive tackling of Cedric Harris and Logan
Sellers, and strong pass coverage of Brandon Taylor
anchored the Mustang defense.
Westview was led offensively by quarterback Harrison
Moore (5 completions, 77 yards, 13 rushes, 50 yards),
and receiver Eric West (2 completions, 36 yards).
Defensively, Paul Cruise, Shawn Hicks, and J. C. Griggs
led the Chargers.
Westview, upon winning the opening coin-toss, declined
the ball until the second half.
Huntingdon received the football on the 35 after Charger
Cory Nethery's booted the opening kickoff out of bounds.
Huntingdon's first offensive series was short-lived as
Donald was tackled twice for no gain by Charger
defenders Brandon Wilson and Justin Burlison. Mustang
punter Cole McAdams kick was downed at the 28.

Lions drop regional opener
21-14 to Humboldt Vikings |
|
The Dresden Lions dropped their Region 7-2A opener last
Friday night to the Humboldt Vikings, 20-14. The Lions
were unable to overcome a 14-0 deficit at the half,
despite dominating the second half of play.
Humboldt took the opening kick-off and began their first
offensive series of the game from their own 30-yard
line. Nine plays later, Viking senior runningback Adrian
Donald carried for 12 yards around the right side for
the first Humboldt TD of the evening. During the drive,
Viking quarterback Keith Wardlow connected with Will
Parker Roe on a pass good for 34 yards to move the line
of scrimmage to the Dresden side of the field. On the
points-after-attempt, Jon Corey Ford kicked the extra
point to give Humboldt a 7-0 lead with 6:36 remaining in
the first quarter of play.
The remainder of the first quarter was scoreless, but
Humboldt had possession to begin the second quarter
after recovering Dresden’s only fumble of the game at
the Lion 25-yard line. The Vikings took five plays to
find pay dirt on a four yard run by Donald up the center
of the line. Ford’s kick was good on the PAT to give
Humboldt a 14-0 advantage, which is where the score
stood at the mid-game break.
