Greenfield tops Middleton 20-6 for first win
By Jason Peevyhouse
Sports Editor

Mother Nature may have sent the Greenfield Yellowjackets and Middleton Tigers, as well as local football fans, a significant downpour during the second quarter of Friday night’s contest, but nothing was going to rain on the Greenfield parade as the ’Jackets scored twice in the second half to put away the Tigers and take a 20-6 win.

Greenfield got started off on the right foot as Thanos Edmontson opened the game with an 11-yard carry for a first down. Two plays later, Edmonston picked up another first down with a 13-yard gain. However, a penalty stalled the drive as the five yards lost proved to be enough to force the ’Jackets to punt.

Middleton took over at their own 24-yard line and went to their hefty fullback Brandon McKinnie, as the 6-4, 300-pound back busted through the Greenfield defense for a 14-yard gain. After another pair of McKinnie runs, as well as a six-yard carry by Logan Howell, an offsides penalty gave the Tigers another first down. Middleton was able to pick up two more first downs before the end of the first frame, both inside the ’Jackets territory. After an eight-yard gain by Kevin Prewitt gave the Tigers a fresh set of downs at the Greenfield 30-yard line, McKinnie gained another first down and eight more yards two plays later. However, as the quarter changed, the ’Jacket defense toughened up and kept the Tigers out of the end zone.

Gleason continues skid with 26-0 loss to Fulton Co.
By Rory Higgins
Sports Writer

Coming off their loss at Union City from last week, the Gleason Bulldogs were visited by the Fulton County Pilots on Friday night. Despite a 30-minute rain delay, a shower during most of the second quarter, and another impending storm, the game went on that evening, with the home team suffering a 0-26 loss.
The game started almost 30 minutes late as officials waited for a storm overhead to pass, but the game got off to a quick first quarter as both teams seemed to have trouble maintaining control of the ball.
Multiple turnovers and running plays saw the opening stanza scoreless, but just as the rain began in the second quarter, the Pilots began to make some successful offensive plays following a quarterback sack from Fulton County that forced a turnover on downs at the FCHS 48-yard line.
From there, a couple plays pushed Fulton County up to the Gleason 39-yard line, but a stop from a host of Bulldogs helped push the Pilots back to the 50-yard line on a run from Antione Gaston.
Gleason's defense was not able to stave off Fulton County for too much longer, as a 39-yard touchdown from Johnathan Roberson to Chaz Dial made the scoreboard 7-0, with the kicked extra point good.

Dresden Middle tops Gleason in junior high action
By Jason Peevyhouse
Sports Editor

The Dresden Middle School Lions got back to their winning ways against Weakley County opponents on Thursday night as they rebounded from a loss to Martin a week earlier to hand the Gleason Bulldogs a 34-6 setback.

It did not take long for the Lions to get on the board. After a pair of runs that netted seven yards, Lion running back Will Vernon broke through the Gleason defense for a 56-yard touchdown run. Gatlin Hatchel added the two-point conversion to make the score 8-0 with 6:25 left in the opening frame.

Dresden got on the board again later in the first frame and once again it only took a few plays for the Lions to get across the goal line. A nine-yard run by Hatchel followed by a 15-yard pass from Dale Hutcherson to Michawl Hawks set up a 14-yard Vernon run for a touchdown with 10.5 seconds left in the first frame.

Gleason was able to answer back at the start of the second frame. After picking up a pair of first downs with a six-yard run from James Owen and an 18-yard pass from Kirby Esch to Douglas Valley, DMS appeared ready to halt the Gleason drive. But, an unsportsmanlike penalty proved to be costly as it gave the Bulldogs a fresh set of downs and an extra 15 yards. Two plays later, Owen scored on a seven-yard carry to make the score 14-6 with 3:03 left in the first half.

However, the Lions were able to answer right back. Led on the ground by runs from Hatchel and Vernon, DMS put the ball in the air as time ran out. Hutcherson hit Hawks for a 31-yard touchdown strike to make the score 20-6 at the half.
