Westview’s Chargers paid a visit to Dresden’s Rotary
Field last Friday night and when the dust settled from
the game Westview carried away a 14-0 victory over the
Lions in the District 7-2A contest.
For the second time this season, turnovers played a big
part in the outcome of the game for the Lions. To the
credit of the Charger defensive unit, Dresden had five
passes intercepted and two turnovers on fumbles, which
brought potential scoring drives to an end. While
Westview did not exactly capitalize on any of the
turnovers by Dresden, the miscues interrupted the flow
the Lions offensive effort and often took away any field
advantage the Lions might have had on any subsequent
series.
Westview for it’s part used the running game to grind
out some hard earned yards against the Lions defensive
unit, which has been an especially bright spot for the
Lions during the past two games. The Chargers only went
to the air three times during the contest to complete
two passes for a total of ten yards gained.
Westview received the opening kick-off and moved the
line of scrimmage from their own 34 out to the 48-yard
line where they were forced to punt. On the punt, Lions
Austin Evans and Clay Adams burst through the line and
arrived at the Charger punter in time to block the punt
and give Dresden possession at the Westview 49-yard line
for their opening offensive series of the game.
The Lions were able to move the ball to the Westview
31-yard line before a Dresden fumble was recovered by
Charger Justin Burlison to give Westview possession at
their own 32-yard line. The possession was short lived
as the Chargers punted on fourth down to return
possession to the Lions at their own 12-yard line.
Dresden punted
the ball on fourth down to return the ball to Westview
at the Lion 46-yard line, from where the Chargers began
their first scoring drive of the game. On the seventh
play of the drive, Westview quarterback Harrison Moore
ran a bootleg to the left to score from two yards out.
Cory Nethery kicked the points after attempt to give the
Chargers a 7-0 lead with 10:40 remaining in the second
quarter. On the scoring drive, running back J.C. Griggs
carried for 25 yards and Eric West ran for 15 yards to
make significant contributions.
