Westview blanks Dresden for regional win
By Jeff Washburn
Editor

Westview’s Chargers paid a visit to Dresden’s Rotary Field last Friday night and when the dust settled from the game Westview carried away a 14-0 victory over the Lions in the District 7-2A contest.

For the second time this season, turnovers played a big part in the outcome of the game for the Lions. To the credit of the Charger defensive unit, Dresden had five passes intercepted and two turnovers on fumbles, which brought potential scoring drives to an end. While Westview did not exactly capitalize on any of the turnovers by Dresden, the miscues interrupted the flow the Lions offensive effort and often took away any field advantage the Lions might have had on any subsequent series.

Westview for it’s part used the running game to grind out some hard earned yards against the Lions defensive unit, which has been an especially bright spot for the Lions during the past two games. The Chargers only went to the air three times during the contest to complete two passes for a total of ten yards gained.

Westview received the opening kick-off and moved the line of scrimmage from their own 34 out to the 48-yard line where they were forced to punt. On the punt, Lions Austin Evans and Clay Adams burst through the line and arrived at the Charger punter in time to block the punt and give Dresden possession at the Westview 49-yard line for their opening offensive series of the game.

The Lions were able to move the ball to the Westview 31-yard line before a Dresden fumble was recovered by Charger Justin Burlison to give Westview possession at their own 32-yard line. The possession was short lived as the Chargers punted on fourth down to return possession to the Lions at their own 12-yard line.

Dresden punted the ball on fourth down to return the ball to Westview at the Lion 46-yard line, from where the Chargers began their first scoring drive of the game. On the seventh play of the drive, Westview quarterback Harrison Moore ran a bootleg to the left to score from two yards out. Cory Nethery kicked the points after attempt to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead with 10:40 remaining in the second quarter. On the scoring drive, running back J.C. Griggs carried for 25 yards and Eric West ran for 15 yards to make significant contributions.

West Carroll War Eagles blank GHS Bulldogs 34-0

By Jimmy Gilliam and

Parks Edwards Field was standing room only as Jesse Hensley crowned 2006 homecoming queen. The pre-game homecoming events didn't distract the Bulldogs from the task at hand as they were fired up and ready for the kickoff.

The West Carroll War Eagles were looking for their first win of the season after having played a grueling schedule.  The War Eagles were ranked 2nd in strength of schedule rating in 1A prior to this contest and both the offensive and defensive line wanted to make a statement in the contest.

Gleason won the coin toss and elected to defer until the second half.

The War Eagles set the tone early as Dustin Seay returned the opening kickoff back 80 yards for a West Carroll touchdown. The two-point conversion was good and the War Eagles led 8-0 over Gleason with 11:41 remaining in the 1st quarter.

The Bulldogs drove deep into West Carroll territory on the ensuing drive where the Bulldogs were in the "orange zone" with a 1st and 10 from the War Eagles 12-yard line. Quarterback Zach Wallace called his own number and swept right only to have Joseph Johnson drop him for a loss of 12 yards.  Byron Fuqua and Edward Torres ran the ball on consecutive plays, but were stopped by Avery Fuller and Johnson for a short gain, forcing a 4th and 16 from the West Carroll 18-yard line. Wallace's pass was picked off by Trent Gateley who ran the ball back to the Gleason 17-yard line before Wallace made the tackle. West Carroll scored on the fourth play of the drive when Seay ran it in from the 2-yard line. Seay scored the two-point conversion to put the War Eagles in the lead 16-0 over the Bulldogs with 2:31 remaining in the 1st quarter.

Richard Patterson's ensuing kickoff was recovered by Brandt Cowan to give West Carroll a first and 10 on the Gleason 34 yard line.

Greenfield tops Gleason in Junior High action
By Jason Peevyhouse
Sports Editor

The Greenfield Junior High Yellowjackets continued their stretch run on Thursday night as they handed the visiting Gleason Bulldogs a 42-6 setback at Greenfield.

Gleason looked good on its first drive of the evening as James Owen and Douglas Vallery carried the Bulldogs down to the Greenfield 15-yard line on a 10-play drive. However, the ’Jackets toughened up and stopped the Bulldogs 15 yards away from the goal line.

It took only one play for the momentum to swing in the Yellowjackets favor as Brady Medling broke through the Gleason defense for an 85-yard touchdown run. Steven Sawyers added the two-point conversion to make the score 8-0 with 2:24 left in the opening frame.

Though Gleason was able to get into Greenfield territory again on its next drive, the ’Jacket defense toughened up, halting that drive at the Greenfield 38-yard line. From there, again, it took only one play as Sawyers broke a lengthy run of his own, covering 62 yards for the second Greenfield score. Tyler Jones added the two-point conversion and increased the ’Jackets lead to 16-0 with 42.3 seconds left in the first frame.
