Lions get back on winning track with 12-7 victory
By Jeff Washburn
Editor

The Dresden Lions traveled to Gibson County last Friday night for a Region 7-2A contest and came back home with a 12-7 win over the host Pioneers. The win improved the season record for the Lions to 2-7.

Dresden kicked off to Pioneers to open the game and then halted the Gibson County offensive series after seven plays to force the punt. The Lions took over following the punt at their own 19-yard line and six plays later scored their first touchdown of the game on a double pass play that involved a pass from quarterback Justin Coleman to split end Randy Williams on the sideline with Williams then connection with senior end Drew Vernon for a 55-yard touchdown pass. The extra point kick went wide to leave the Lions with a 6-0 advantage with 5:38 remaining in the first quarter.  On the scoring drive, running back Matt Clements had a 14-yard run to keep the drive alive.

Gibson County received the Dresden kick-off and returned it out to their own 38-yard line where they began their first and only successful scoring drive of the game. On the fourth play of the series, running back Antone Cunningham told the handoff and scurried 54 yard for a touchdown with 3:40 remaining in the first quarter. Bill Luckey kicked the extra point to give the Pioneers a 7-6 edge in the game.

The Pioneers threatened to score one other time in the first half of play as they began a drive early in the second quarter at their own 26-yard line and marched the ball down field over a series of 11 plays to the Dresden 16-yard line where the Lion defensive unit held and forced a turnover on downs. The Lions did not mount any serious scoring threats for the remainder of the first half.

Dresden took the opening kick-off of the second half and began their offensive set at their own 35-yard line. The Lions moved the ball down the field over the course of nine plays to the Gibson County 13-yard line where a Coleman pass was intercepted by the Pioneers to bring the scoring threat to a screeching halt.

Gleason drops 42-7 contest to Lake County Falcons
By Jason Peevyhouse
Sports Editor

With the Bulldogs playoff chances hanging on by a thread, the Lake County Falcons put an end to the Gleason playoff hopes as the 42-7 loss to the Falcons on Friday night in Tiptonville mathematically eliminated the Bulldogs.

Despite not having their starting quarterback Brandon Springer due to injury, the Falcons got on the board early. After four runs by Damio Yancy took the Falcons to the Lake County 40-yard line, freshman quarterback Seth Hinson found Sep Valentine for a 29-yard strike across midfield to the Gleason 31-yard line. After a 10-yard run by Hinson, the freshman quarterback hit Valentine for a second completion, this one for a 21-yard scoring strike to make the score 6-0 with 8:10 left in the first frame.

Gleason was able to get a couple big plays on its first drive – a 22-yard run by Wallace, but the drive stalled, forcing the Bulldogs to punt. Neither team was able to get their offenses moving over the next two possessions, but Lake County got back on the offensive on its third possession.

After starting at their own 26-yard line, the Falcons went to Sam Mills, who broke a 20-yard run to open the drive. After a five-yard Yancy run, Mills followed with a 42-yard sprint to the Gleason 7-yard line. From there, Mills capped the drive with a seven-yard touchdown run to make the score 12-0 with 11:35 left in the first half.

Lake County got on the board one more time before the half. Though a Gleason punt put the Falcons deep inside their own territory, Yancy broke free for a 71-yard touchdown run. Hinson added the two-point conversion to extend the Lake County lead to 20-0 with 3:39 left in the half.

Tornadoes dominate Yellowjackets in second half
By Rory Higgins
Sports Writer

Though Greenfield later faltered on into the second half, the visiting Yellowjackets put up quite a fight against the Union City Golden Tornadoes on their home turf through the first half Friday night.

Though the 'Jackets had to turn the ball over fairly soon after their first possession after Union City opened up the game kicking to the away team, Greenfield showed that they were not going to slouch this evening after a number of stops from Dustin Allen and Brodie Cogburn forced a turnover on downs just as Union City entered GHS territory with a first down at their 45-yard line.

Rallied, a couple runs from Thanos Edmonston brought the team to the Union City 36-yard line, and even though Greenfield was forced to punt shortly after that, a fumble on the Tornadoes resulted in a recovery from Greenfield's Daniel Ricketts, giving the Yellowjackets ball control once again at the Union City 29-yard line for what ended up as more progress down the field.

Unfortunately for Greenfield fans, an intercepted pass put Union City back on the offensive just as the first quarter was coming to a close. Tornado Demetrius Gracie ran the ball multiple times after this, eventually bringing the ball down for a touchdown at 10:42 into the second quarter. With the kick good, Union City was now 7-0.

Greenfield's next ball possession did not start out well, but it definitely ended with them keeping their momentum going. Taking it from the 20-yard line after a touchback, Greenfield suffered a 5-yard setback after having too many players on the field.

Edmonston carried the ball on the first play to bring it back to the 20-yard line, but then a quarterback sack pushed the Yellowjackets back to the 13-yard line. From there, Colin Medling hit Ricketts with an 87-yard pass for a touchdown at 9:07, showing the Tornadoes that GHS was still in the game, 7-6.
