Lions close out season with homecoming victory
By Jeff Washburn
Editor

The Dresden Lions added to the homecoming joy and finished the 2006 gridiron season on a successful note when they soundly defeated the Bruins of the University School of Jackson last Friday night at Dresden’s Rotary Field.

Pre-game homecoming festivities were abbreviated due intermittent rain showers that occurred, but that didn’t stop the enthusiasm of the Lions football players as they went into action and had an impressive 296 yards offensive effort and picked off two Bruin passes on the defensive side to pick up the win.

The Lions finished the season with a record of three wins and seven losses and were 2-5 in Region 7-2A action.

Dresden received the opening kick-off and started off their first offensive series at their own 32-yard line. The Lions moved the ball to the Bruin 47, where they were forced to punt on fourth down. The two teams traded possessions as neither team was able to mount a serious scoring effort during the first quarter of play.

Dresden finally was able to break the ice and score the first TD of the game late in the second quarter of play on a 23-yard run by Clay Adams to cap off a 13-play drive that began at the Lion 36-yard line. Dylan Nanney kicked the points-after-attempt to give Dresden a 7-0 advantage with 3:47 remaining in the first half.

USJ received the Lion kick-off and returned it out to their own 31 yard line and were able to move the ball to the Dresden 45 before Lion Drew Vernon intercepted a Bruin pass to bring the first half of play to an end.

The Bruins received the second half kick-off and began their first offensive series of the second half at their own 35-yard line. Six plays later, USJ’s Tate Gray ran to the left side of the line from six yards out for a TD with 9:40 remaining in the third quarter. Wade Thomson kicked the extra point to put the Bruins ahead by one, 7-6.

Dresden was quick to answer the USJ TD with one of their own as they received the Bruin kick-off and returned it out to their own 18-yard line. Eight plays later, Dwayne Bailey ran the ball up the center from four yards out for a TD. The PAT failed to leave Dresden with a 13-7 advantage with 4:59 remaining in the third quarter. During the scoring drive, quarterback Justin Coleman connected with Brandon Schultek on a pass good for 48 yards to help set up the scoring run.

Greenfield ends season on positive note with 39-0 win
By Rory Higgins
Sports Writer

As strong winds and constant misting made Fridaynight's game at Greenfield with the visiting South Fulton Red Devils a bit wetter than usual, the Yellowjackets dominated SFHS to come off with a 39-0 victory.
South Fulton received at the start of the game, but the Red Devils were forced to punt after four downs, though the ball went right back to them after Greenfield fumbled the ball on their first down on the possession, recovered by Codie Rogers.
Recovering at Greenfield's 35-yard line, South Fulton's Deric Grooms kept the ball for a 5-yard carry, while an offsides penalty on the 'Jackets gave SFHS a first down. However, the Greenfield squad did not allow the Red Devils to score or push any further, as a couple incomplete passes and a fourth down stop from Aaron Davidson that pushed the ball back to the 32-yard line put GHS in control.
From there, Thanos Edmonston ran straight through the line for a first down at the South Fulton 41-yard line. Chase McMullen carried the ball to the 21-yard line for another first down, which was then followed up by a couple runs from Edmonston for a touchdown at 5:25 in the first. With the extra two points good as ran by Kentavis Brent, Greenfield was now 8-0.
After three-and-out, Greenfield's Edmonston and McMullen carried the ball downfield on a few plays to bring it to the 7-yard line, at which point Brent ran it the rest of the way for a touchdown at 11:55 just into the second quarter, extending the ’Jackets lead to 14-0 over South Fulton after this.

Greenfield scored twice more before the half was over, another touchdown from Edmonston and an intercepted pass from Brett Perkins at the South Fulton 32-yard line which Perkins took to the end zone. The Yellowjackets were ahead 26-0 at halftime.
The rain and wind got a bit heavier in the second half, but this did not stop Greenfield from extending their lead before the contest was over.

McKenzie shuts out Gleason to end Bulldogs season
By Jimmy Gilliam
Special to the Enterprise

The Rebels delivered a 40-0 shutout victory against the Bulldogs just like a mail carrier in bad weather, and bad weather it was as the teams took the field.

The rainy conditions weren’t the best to play in, but the Rebels continued to find dominating ways of controlling the game. McKenzie’s special teams, led by Zach English, established their presents early and continued throughout the game with mammoth hits on the ball carriers.

It was senior night for Gleason as they honored the seniors before the game. The Bulldogs came out strong on their opening drive with big runs by Josh Sumner and a 41-yard bootleg run by Zach Wallace that spotted the ball at the Rebels 30-yard line. The Rebels defense dug in with great stops by Cory Ellis, O.C. Melton, and Zach English forcing the Bulldogs to turn the ball over on downs at the Rebels 30-yard line.

Derek Carr connected with Justin Rogers and Scott Cunningham consecutively to move the ball down to the Gleason 16-yard line. Ryan French scored two plays later from two yards out on a run up the middle.  The point after attempt failed and McKenzie led 6-0 with 7:03 remaining in the first quarter.

Gleason coughed the ball up on the ensuing drive as McKenzie’s Jacob Fussell fell on the loose ball at the Bulldogs 31 yard line. The Rebels Ryan French pounded into the end zone from one-yard out on the third play of the drive. Harris Laughrey’s extra point was good and the Rebels led 13-0 over Gleason with 5:38 remaining in the first quarter.

McKenzie’s Cory Ellis recovered a Bulldog fumble to give the Rebels the ball at Gleason’s 19-yard line. Carr found Rogers for 16 yards on first down and French finished the drive with a 3-yard run up the middle. Laughrey added the PAT to give the Rebels a 20-0 lead with 4:55 remaining in the first quarter.
