By Jason Peevyhouse

The Martin Middle School teams started their week off on a positive note as the Lady Panthers and Panthers swept DMS on Monday night at home. However, while the Panthers dominated, taking a 53-39 win, the Lady Lions gave the Lady Panthers all they could stand as it took a last minute shot by Jacey Sims to give Martin a 29-27 win.

Though Martin took an early lead after one frame, the Lady Lions rallied to tie the game at the half and even lead as late as the 3:30 mark of the final frame before a late rally gave the Lady Panthers the win.

Sims led the way for the Lady Panthers in the opening frame, getting four of Martin’s six points as MMS took a 6-2 lead after one frame.

Martin was able to build its lead to 11-4 after a three-pointer from Taylor Swaim. But, DMS rallied getting four points from Jesica Parsley and buckets from Alex Glisson and Anna Stafford to cut the MMS lead to one point late in the half. A foul as time expired sent Amy Reddick to the line where she hit one of her two attempts to tie the game 13-13 at the half.

Though an early Parsley deuce gave DMS a brief lead, a jumper from Sims sparked a 10-2 run that helped Martin take a 23-19 lead at the end of the third frame.

DMS started off the final frame strong as a Stafford jumper sparked an 8-0 run that gave the Lady Lions a 27-23 lead with 2:49 left in the game. But, MMS responded with a pair of Breanna Pitcher buckets to set up Sims’ game-winning shot with three seconds left.

Despite trailing early in the final frame, a 7-0 run by the Greenfield Lady ’Jackets propelled the Greenfield girls to a 28-23 win over Gleason on Thursday night in Greenfield.

After an early bucket to start the fourth quarter and give Gleason a 22-21 lead. Emily Randolph got a three-point play which was followed by buckets from Jordan Galey and Taylor Hatcher to build a 7-0 run that was only snapped by a late free throw from Camille Cooper to cut the Greenfield lead back to five points. However, the Lady ’Jackets held on to take the win over county-rival Gleason

A strong start proved to be what the ’Jackets needed as they outscored Gleason 13-4 in the first six minutes of action to help Greenfield take a five-point win over Gleason.

After a pair of early buckets from Gleason gave the Bulldogs an early 4-0 lead, a three-point play from Graham Perkins sparked a 13-0 run to end the first frame and give the ’Jackets a 13-4 lead after one frame.

Though Gleason was able to outscore Greenfield 28-24 over the next three frames, the first quarter run proved to be the difference as Greenfield took the win.

Bethel claims first Mid-South Conference title with dominating win

The No. 9 ranked Bethel College Wildcat’s (9-2) defense totally dominated the visiting Campbellsville University Fighting Tigers (2-8) on senior day allowing only 75 total yards of offense.

The defense’s effort gave the Wildcat offense good field position and allowed Bethel to pound the ball on the ground.  In the end, the Wildcats came away with a 47-0 victory and their first Mid-South Conference Title.

The Bethel defense was stifling from the beginning, as Darren Adderly intercepted a pass to give the Wildcats the ball at mid-field.  Bethel needed seven plays and 2:58 to go 50-yards for a touchdown.  Stevie Mills punched it in from the fullback position and Shane Normandin added the PAT for a 7-0 lead.

Normandin then put the Wildcats up 10-0 in the second quarter on a 26-yard field goal.  The Wildcat defense kept the Tigers at bay and went to the half with the 10-0 lead.

Campbellsville opened the second half on offense and on fourth and seventeen from their own 22, Tiger punter, Ryan Donohue, lost the handle on the long-snap and recovered it in the end-zone resulting in a safety for Bethel and a 12-0 lead.

Donald Lightfoot returned the free kick 29 yards to the Tiger’s 28-yard line.  Terrance Bell found the end zone from five yards out on Bethel’s second play and with Narmandin’s PAT, the Wildcats led 19-0.

Bethel got the ball right back as Campbellsville fumbled the kickoff.  The Wildcats would need five plays and 2:35 on the clock for Adrain Smith to find the end zone.  The PAT by Normandin was good and Bethel was in command 26-0.
