Dresden avenges earlier loss to McKenzie with 3-1 win |
By Jason Peevyhouse
Sports Editor |
The ability to come back after a rough outing is
considered one of the signs of a stellar team and the
Dresden Lions can all say, after a recent skid, that
they are back on the right track. Behind the pitching of
Jacob Hatchel, the Lions held the Rebels off the board
for much of the afternoon, taking a 3-2 decision over
the Rebels on Friday afternoon at Dresden.
Hatchel, who had been roughed up for nine runs in one
inning in his previous outing, held the Rebels to two
runs on three hits over the course of seven innings.
Dresden threatened early in the ball game, as a walk to
Randy Williams and a single by Matt Thomas put two
runners on with one out. However, a strikeout and a
grounder to second base ended the threat.
The Lions opened the bottom of the second with a bang.
A single by Adam Clements led to a double from Derrick
Hansen, giving the Lions two baserunners in scoring
position with no outs. Hatchel helped himself at the
plate, knocking a triple into the gap to score both
runners. Drew Vernon followed with a groundout to second
base to score Hatchel and push the Lion lead to 3-0
after two innings.
The Rebels got runners on in both the third and fourth
innings, but the Dresden defense was able to get out of
the jam. The Lions got a fielder's choice to end the
third and a 5-4-3 double play to end the fourth.

Dyersburg tops Westview for district victory |
By: Rory Higgins
Sports Writer |
As Little League games went
on around the late afternoon game Friday at the Martin
Recreation Complex, the Westview Chargers baseball team
took on the visiting Dyersburg Trojans. Despite an early
8-2 third inning lead, the away team took off in the
remaining four innings to win the contest.
Opening up the game, Dyersburg earned two runs in the
top of the first after hits from Tyler Childress and
Steven Brown brought a couple runners homes. With both
Childress and Brown on base, the next batter's hit went
to Brady Legens, who tossed it to Brandon Pate on first
for the third out.
After this, Westview went out on the bottom of the
first with only one runner on base from a walk, as a
couple strikeouts and a groundout from Brown to
Childress.
Dyersburg managed to load the bases in the second
inning, but were not able to get past that as a couple
outs from Alex Parham were followed by another Legens-Pate
groundout to end the Trojans' at-bat.

Gleason tops Lady Lions 7-5 in district softball action |
By Andrew Pritchett
Sports Writer |
The Gleason Lady Bulldog softball team put up seve runs
in four innings to outlast the Dresden Lady Lions 7-5.
Gleason's Ashley Camp knocked in three of the runs,
countering the Lady Lions scored three runs in the
bottom of the seventh inning in attempt to win the game.
In the top of the first, Gleason's Katlin Gaylord hit a
double and scored Lacie Trevathan from second base.
In Dresden's half of the opening inning, the pitching
from Taylor Wharton sat down the Lady Lions in order
including a strike out.
In the next at bat, the Lady Bulldogs put on a show
with Taylor Stout hitting a single and stealing second
base. Molly Clemons reached base, putting Taylor Stout
on third. Clemons then stole second base. This lead up
to Camp's first RBI, getting a single and scoring Taylor
Stout. Later, Trevathan singled to score Molly Clemons.
The inning seemed to be a rout but a resilient Lady Lion
defense stiffened and Gleason stranded three base
runners.
In the bottom of the second inning, LaShanda Wright
showed some power by hitting one over the left field
fence for one run. The Bulldog continued to score in the
third inning with Wharton hitting a single and then
stealing second base. Clemons reached base from an error
and would later steal second base. Camp nailed a triple
scoring Wharton and Clemons.
