Greenfield battles, but
falls late to Union City |
By Jason Peevyhouse
Sports Editor |
The Greenfield Yellowjackets
put up a good fight on Monday afternoon, but a combined
six runs in the final two innings put the game out of
reach and the Union City Tornadoes took a 15-6 win over
Greenfield back to Obion County.
After falling behind 2-0 in the opening inning, the
'Jackets did not waste any time matching the runs that
Union City had put up in the top half of the first. With
one away in the bottom of the first inning, Brett
Perkins smashed a double into the outfield. Two batters
later, older brother Jakob Perkins reached on an error
that scored Brett to cut the Union City lead down to
2-1. The next batter, Channing Edwards, then belted a
double to scored the elder Perkins and tie the game at
2-2.
However, Union City made sure that the game did not
stay tied for long. With two outs in the top of the
second inning, a Ben Hopkins single sparked a four-run
rally that was highlighted by a three-run single by
Hunter Lindsey and an RBI-base hit by Colton Speed to
give the Tornadoes a 6-2 lead.
Greenfield was able to cut into that lead in the bottom
of the third inning. Once again, it was the Perkins boys
doing the damage as Brett led off the inning with a
single and was knocked in on a double by Jakob. The
older Perkins was then brought home on an Adam Ledezma
double to cut the Union City lead to 6-4 after three
innings.

The Dresden Lady Lion softball team continued
their early season struggles on Friday afternoon,

The Lady Lions were able to get some offense, but were
unable to get across the plate during the first half of
the double header.
Peabody got on the board early as Hopper scored on a
passed ball. Newell got an RBI double and Jackson added
a one-run single to make the score 3-0 after the top of
the first inning.
Though Dresden got singles from Marlee Mason and Katie
McWherter to open the inning, both runners were stranded
as the next three batters went down on strikes.
Peabody continued its offense attack in the top of the
second inning. An RBI single from Sturgeon was joined by
another RBI hit from Newell and a run-scoring groundout.
The Lady Tide also got a pair of runs on a passed ball
and a stolen base to extend their lead to 8-0 after the
top of the second.
After retiring the Lady Lions in order in the bottom of
the second inning, Peabody added another pair of runs in
the top of the third on RBI singles from Copeland and
Sturgeon.
Dresden was able to get two runners on in the bottom of
the third, but could not get them across as Erica
Glisson (courtesy runner for Kenra Caldwell, Dresden's
pitcher) and McWherter were left stranded at second and
third respectively.

Gleason uses 10-run third
inning to cruise to eight-run win |
By Jason Peevyhouse
Sports Editor |
Sometimes all it takes is one big inning to make
the difference between a win and a loss. The Gleason
Lady Bulldogs proved that to be true on Thursday
afternoon as a 10-run third inning paved the way for a
15-7 win over county and district rival Dresden at
Gleason.
Dresden was able to take an early lead in the top of
the first inning. After reaching base on a walk, Ashlee
Dubruiel scored on a passed ball to give Dresden an
early lead. Later in the inning, Marlee Mason reached on
a fielder's choice while driving in Katie McWherter (who
had singled earlier in the frame) to make the score 2-0
in favor of Dresden.
The Lady Lions added to their lead in the top of the
second inning. After Landy Fortune scored on a catcher's
error after walking top lead off the inning, Katie
McWherter laced a triple to score Dubruiel (who reached
on the catcher's error that scored Fortune). McWherter
then scored on an error by the third baseman to extend
the Dresden lead to 5-0.
Gleason finally got on the board in the bottom of the
second inning as Taylor Stout led off the inning with a
single. After a pop-out and a single by Taylor Wharton,
Molly Clements singled in Stout to cut the Dresden lead
to 5-1 after two innings.
