Greenfield girls upset
Union City to advance to title game |
By Jason Peevyhouse
Sports Editor |
On a night that had already seen
one upset involving a scenario where the higher-seeded
team had beaten its opponent three times this season,
Greenfield's Lady 'Jackets made it a perfect two-for-two
for the Region 7-A semifinal underdogs on Saturday night
as the Lady 'Jackets recovered from an improbable
three-pointer at the end of regulation to take a 49-46
overtime win over Union City at Peabody High School in
Trenton.
After three points from Sharia Williams countered a
Nicole Jones jumper, a three-pointer from Becky Atnip
gave the lead back to Greenfield with 6:13 left in the
opening quarter. But, buckets from Debrisha Robinson and
Brittany Taylor gave the lead back to the Lady Tornadoes
briefly. However, a free throw from Pannayiotta
Edmontson and a pair of free throws from Atnip caused
the quarter's fourth lead change with 1:27 left in the
stanza. After a Taylor jumper put Union City back on
top, Alyse Page hit a short jumper to make the score
10-9 in Greenfield's favor after one frame.
Though the offenses slowed in the second quarter,
Greenfield was able to make the most of it. After a
Labrica Ward jumper put Union City on top, the Lady
'Jackets ended the first half with an 8-2 run capped by
treys from Atnip and Page to make the score 18-13 at the
break.
Both teams went back and fourth through the opening
moments of the second half, but Greenfield managed to
extend its lead to seven points with a three-pointer
with 3:53 left in the third stanza. But, Union City's
offense awoke, getting a 10-0 run with a balanced
offensive effort that was capped by a Anna McEwen trey
to give Union City the lead and a jumper from Robinson
to extend the gap to three points with 41 seconds left.
But, a three-pointer from Page as time expired tied the
game at 28-28 after three frames.

Lady Falcons stun
top-ranked Gleason to advance |
By Jason Peevyhouse
Sports Editor |
For the second straight year, a Weakley County
team heading into the regional tournaments fell in the
semifinal round to a team from its own district as
Gleason dropped a season-ending 49-46 loss to Lake
County on Saturday night at Peabody High School in
Trenton.
Gleason got on the board early in the first frame as
jumpers from Amber Wiseman and Kayla Hudson, along with
a trey from Meagan Price countered a Lake County free
throw to give the Lady Bulldogs a 7-1 lead with 4:28
left in the opening frame. But, Lake County rallied as a
free throw from Sarah Wallace and a pair of jumpers from
Christian Clay countered a Price jumper to trim the lead
to three points. A pair of late Hudson free throws put
Gleason's lead at 11-6 after one frame.
Lake County took command in the second frame as
three-pointers from Queenie Jordan and Renita Kinney put
the Lady Falcons up 12-11 with 3:24 left in the first
half. Price answered with a jumper and Wiseman added a
pair of free throws, but a trey from Kinney tied the
game at 15-15 with just under two minutes left in the
half. A pair of Hudson freebies were answered by two
Wallace free throws, but a jumper from Tiffany Felts and
a deuce from Price gave Gleason a 21-17 lead going into
the half.

semifinals in Springfield on Friday |
By Jason Peevyhouse
Sports Editor |
After a two-week break in the TNT Tournament
thanks to weather, both the DMS Lady Lions and Lions
suffered semifinal losses on Friday night in
Springfield.
The Lady Lions dropped a 37-24 decision to the USJ Lady
Bruins while the Lions fell 49-35 in the following game.
USJ Lady Bruins 37
DMS Lady Lions 24
Though Dresden led for much of the opening frame, a
late trey from Adiran Sanders gave the Lady Bruins a
lead they would not lose.
Dresden took the lead early in the opening stanza as a
pair of short jumpers from Brianna Dubruiel countered
three Lady Bruin free throws to give DMS a 4-3 lead with
2:54 left in the first frame. After a Kayla Petty jumper
gave the lead to the Lady Bruins, another Dubruiel tally
put the Lady Lions back on top. A jumper from Hunter Day
returned the lead to the Lady Bruins briefly, but
another Dubruiel jumper put Dresden back on top. But, a
three-pointer from Sanders with three seconds left made
the score 10-8 in favor of USJ after the first frame.
