Greenfield girls upset Union City to advance to title game
By Jason Peevyhouse
Sports Editor

Only one team in Class A would be able to win their final game of the season. However, the Greenfield Lady 'Jackets made sure they went out on a positive note as they were able to stay close to the Summertown Lady Eagles, nearly taking the victory before falling 61-54 at the Murphycenter on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro on Wednesday morning.
Summertown struck first and often, as three jumpers from Lady Eagles Emily Franks, Beth Long and Mallory Scott allowed the Summertown girls to jump out to an early 6-0 lead with 5:49 left in the first frame. After a Becky Atnip jumper cut the lead back to four, a pair of Haley Lovett free throws pushed the lead back to six points. But, a pair of Alyse Page jumpers countered a pair of Franks free throws to cut the lead down to two 10-8 with 2:09 left in the opening stanza. After a Kayla Clark layup extended the Lady Eagle lead, a third trey from Page cut the Summertown lead back to a single point with just over a minute left in the first frame. But a pair of free throws and a three-pointer by Long in the final 21 seconds gave the Lady Eagles a 17-11 lead after one frame.
Greenfield cut into the lead early in the second frame, getting a layup and two free throws from Atnip to trim the advantage to 17-15. Both teams matched buckets for the next few minutes as a Franks layup was countered by an Anastasia Allen jumper, after which a Jennifer Peterson jumper was countered by a Page bucket from right at the three-point line. Greenfield finally tied the game with an Atnip jumper with 2:41 left in the first half. After a Franks layup gave the lead back to Summertown, a Nicole Jones jumper tied the game with 1:11 left in the first half. But, a pair of late free throws from Haley Lovett put the Lady Eagles on top 25-23 at the end of the first half.
As she had done during the first frame, Page began the second half by taking a long-range attack and it paid off as her three-pointer with 6:42 left in the third quarter gave Greenfield its first lead of the game. After a layup by Franks put the Lady Eagles back on top, Allen hit a short jumper to give Greenfield the lead again at 28-27. After four points from Jennifer Peterson put the Lady Eagles ahead, Rhiannon Caudle tied the game with a trey with 4:11 left in the third frame. But, five quick points by the Lady Eagles gave the Summertown girls the lead again. A late trey from Atnip cut the lead back to one point, but an Allison Durham trey put the Lady Eagles on top 40-36 after the third quarter.
