Young hunters, between 6 and 16, will be allowed to hunt
a 400-plus acre parcel of land known as Lock 5 Refuge
beginning next fall, according to the Tennessee Wildlife
Resources Agency.
A portion of the refuge, located near Lebanon and
alongside the Cumberland River, was to be closed this
fall to all hunting after the 13-member Tennessee
Wildlife Resources Commission met in May to establish
season dates, bag limits, and rules and regulations for
the 2006-07 hunting season.
However, the commission's Wildlife Committee asked that
the entire governing body reconsider the closure at the
request of concerned sportsmen, and ultimately
commissioners voted to allow young hunters access to the
portion of the refuge south of the Cumberland River.
Non-hunting adults 21 and older will have to accompany
youngsters, but youth hunting will occur the first four
weekends of Tennessee's archery-only deer season, and
the first four weekends of the spring wild turkey hunt.
