Gleason boys upset DHS in regular season finale
By Jason Peevyhouse

The Gleason Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs made sure that their seniors would go out on a good note as both Gleason teams claimed victories on Monday night during Senior Night over county-rival Dresden. In boys’ action, the Bulldogs defeated the Lions 51-49 after a late trey from Byron Fuqua and a late Adam Bennett free throw. In girls’ action, the Lady Dawgs sealed their perfect regular season district record with a 55-44 win over the Lady Lions.

Gleason gained some much-needed momentum going into Thursday night’s play-in game against Greenfield as a late rally pushed the Bulldogs past the Lions at Gleason High School.

The win for the Bulldogs was Gleason’s first over the Dresden Lions since Dec. 3, 2002. That game was also at Gleason High School and was the first game in which current coaches Pete Angelos and Tommy Dilday faced off.

Though Gleason was able to jump out to a lead at the end of the first frame, the Lady Lions clawed their way back and kept the game close.

After a jumper by Tiffany Felts to break the scoreless tie a little over a minute into action, Dresden got a long jumper from Danielle Blackstone and a three-pointer from Ashlee Dubruiel to take a 5-2 lead with 3:08 left in the first frame. But, a layup by Felts, followed by a three-point play from Amber Wiseman gave the lead back to the Lady Dawgs. Meagan Price capped the scoring spree with a jumper and a three-pointer to make the score 12-5 after one frame.

The Lady Lions came out firing in the second half. A three-pointer from Laci Kelley and a jumper from Dubruiel cut the lead to two points. After a free throw from Kelley, a jumper from Allison Paschal put the Lady Lions up 13-12 with 1:34 left in the first half. But, a Wiseman layup moments later sparked a 6-0 run by the Lady Bulldogs that was capped by four points from Kayla Hudson to make the score 18-13 at the end of the first frame.

Both the Dresden Middle School Lions and Lady Lions assured themselves of an extended season on Saturday as both teams brought back wins in the first round of the TNT Tournament held in Springfield on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Lions took home a 43-30 victory over East Robertson while the boys claimed a 51-37 win against the East Robertson boys.

The Lady Lions jumped out to an early lead then their defense took over to seal the win for the Dresden Middle School girls.

With buckets from Courtney McMillin, Alayna Owens and Kaci Robbins, the Lady Lions were able to take a 7-4 lead after the first frame. In the second frame, Brianna Dubruiel got hot, scoring eight points to help Dresden Middle take a 23-13 lead at the half.

While the Lady Lions held East Robertson scoreless in the third frame, the Dresden girls got four points from Jesica Parsley to lead the way for Dresden and push its lead to 33-13 after three frames. Though East Robertson was able to outscore Dresden 17-10 in the final six minutes, it was not enough as Dresden took the win to advance.

Dubruiel led the way for Dresden with 14 points while Owens added 12.

Greenfield girls take district win from Lady Lions

By Jason Peevyhouse

Despite leading after the end of one frame, limited scoring in the second and third frames put the Lady Lions in a hole they could not climb out of, giving the Greenfield Lady ’Jackets a 54-32 victory on Tuesday night at Dresden.

In boys’ action, the Lions used a strong second quarter to propel themselves to a 61-49 win over the ’Jackets.

After trailing 14-13 at the end of the first frame, the Lady ’Jackets held Dresden to seven points over the next 16 minutes to take a lead they would never relinquish.

Greenfield took the lead for the first time early in the second frame as a Becky Atnip jumper made the score 15-14 just nine seconds into the second frame. After a Pannayotta Edmontson free throw pushed the lead to two, an Allison Paschal jumper tied the game with 6:21 left in the first half. But, two points from Rhiannon Caudle and a pair of jumpers from Magan Cash gave the Lady ’Jackets a 22-16 lead at the half.

Dresden jumped out to an early lead and, though Greenfield was able to keep it close during the opening frame, a strong second quarter propelled Dresden to the district victory.

A pair of Kyle Odle three-pointers sparked the Dresden offense early and countered a Reggie McHaney trey and a Jakob Perkins deuce to give Dresden a 6-5 lead with 5:14 left in the opening frame. Then, a Ryan Smith jumper sparked a 9-0 run by the Lions that saw another trey from Odle and was capped by a Smith layup to make the score 15-5 with 2:16 left in the opening quarter. A late trey from Jonathan Dethloff and a jumper from McHaney cut the Dresden lead to 15-10 after one frame.
