Lady Bulldogs top Union
City for District 14-A title |
By Jason Peevyhouse
Sports Editor |
Despite a slow start, which
saw the Lady Bulldogs fall as far behind as eight points
during the first frame, the Gleason girls rallied in the
second half to take the District 14-A title from the
Union City Lady Tornadoes, who were shooting for their
first district title since 1949, with a 45-38 victory on
Friday night in South Fulton.
Gleason took an early lead after a Kayla Hudson jumper
and a pair of free throws from Tiffany Felts. But, a
three-pointer from Union City's Brittany Taylor sparked
a 12-0 run that also saw five points from Debrisha
Robinson and gave the Lady Tornadoes a 12-4 lead with
2:31 left in the first frame. After a jumper from Meagan
Price and a layup from Amber Wiseman cut the Union City
lead in half, a three-point play from Labrica Ward put
the Lady Tornadoes up by seven with 40 seconds left in
the fame. But, Gleason kept the game close as a jumper
from Price and a pair of Hudson free throws cut the lead
down to 15-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Though both offenses slowed in the second frame,
buckets from Kelsey Arnold and Brandi Alley pushed the
Union City lead back to seven points with just under six
minutes left in the half. After a trey from Hudson and a
jumper from Wiseman trimmed the Lady Tornado lead to two
points, Union City got three late tallies from Sharia
Williams to make the score 22-17 at the end of the first
half.
However, it seemed as though a different Gleason Lady
Bulldog team came out of the locker room for the second
half. A layup from Meagan Price got the offense rolling
and was followed by four points from Hudson to give the
lead to the Lady Bulldogs for the first time since the
first frame. Felts added a pair of free throws before a
Wiseman deuce and a Candace Green trey capped the 13-0
drive to start the third frame and gave Gleason a 30-22
lead with 5:20 left in the third stanza. A brief 6-2 run
by the Lady Tornadoes cut the lead back to four, but a
free throw from Felts and a Wiseman jumper countered a
Annah McEwen jumper to give the Lady Bulldogs a 35-30
lead going into the final eight minutes of play.

Westview fends off Gibson
County upset bid for title |
By Jason Peevyhouse

Though the Lady Chargers had
handily defeated the Lady Pioneers in two previous
battles during the regular season slate, the Gibson
County girls made sure that the Westview team would not
get a third easy win as the game went down to the wire
before the Lady Chargers claimed a 71-68 win on Monday
night in the finals of the District 13-AA Tournament at
Dyersburg High School.
Led by Kaitlin Dudley Gibson County jumped out to an
early four-point lead before a pair of treys from Latoya
Bellamy and Laura Crittendon put the Lady Chargers on
top at 6-4. A three-point play from Dudley gave the lead
back to the Lady Pioneers, but a second three-pointer
from Bellamy gave the lead back to Westview. After a
pair of layups from Gibson County's Shanna Hurley put
the Lady Pioneers back on top, a jumper from Kendra
Owens tied the game at 11-11. A Shanice McElrath bucket
once again put the lead on the Gibson County side of the
scoreboard, but back-to-back three-pointers from Kala
Klidies and Dazarae Higgs gave Westview a 17-13 lead
with just under two minutes left in the first frame.
But, deuces from Hurley and Camille Coleman tied the
game at 17-17 at the end of the first quarter.
oints while Bellamy added 18. Dudley led everyone with
34 points while Pate added 14 and Coleman tossed in 10.

Greenfield takes fourth
place with loss to Lake County |
By Jason Peevyhouse
Sports Editor |
Though the Lady 'Jackets were
able to take an early lead on the Lady Falcons during
Friday night's District 14-A consolation game at South
Fulton High School, but the Lady Falcons were able to
fend of the Greenfield girls, answering multiple
second-half lead changes to take a 45-43 win and secure
the No. 3 seed from 14-A going into the Region 7-A
Tournament in Trenton.
After swapping a pair of early buckets, Greenfield got
three-pointers from Rhiannon Caudle and Keely Williams
to take an 8-2 lead with 5:18 left in the first frame.
Lake County answered with a jumper from Christian Clay
and a three-pointer from Queenie Jordan to cut the lead
to one point. But, a late jumper from Magan Cash put the
Lady 'Jackets up 10-7 at the end of the first frame.
Lake County was able to cut the lead to one again with
a jumper from Melia Boyd, but a free throw from Becky
Atnip gave Greenfield a slightly larger lead. However,
that lead did not last much longer as a deuce from
Renita Kinney and a three-pointer from Corsica Gross
gave Lake County a 14-11 lead with 3:12 left in the
first half. A three-point play from Atnip tied the game,
but a pair of Sarah Wallace free throws countered a late
Anastasia Allen freebie to give the Lady Falcons a 16-15
lead at the end of the first half.
