By Jason Peevyhouse

Both Dresden and Greenfield met on Tuesday night looking to get momentum going into the Christmas break. Both boys teams could have some momentum, as it took an extra frame before the Lions handed the Yellowjackets a 70-65 overtime loss while the Lady ’Jackets took a 47-30 win over the Dresden girls.

Greenfield Yellowjackets 65 OT

Both the Dresden Lions and Greenfield Yellowjackets gave local basketball fans a fitting end to the pre-Christmas schedule as the Lions needed an extra frame to fend off the pesky Yellowjackets.

Dresden took control early in the first frame as buckets from Wil Levister and Tyson Wright provided the foundation for a 12-2 run to open the game as three straight Matthew Pittman deuces capped the run to give the Lions a 10-point lead with 3:50 left in the first frame. But, Greenfield got back-to-back buckets from Reggie McHaney and a jumper from Jacob Laster to cut the lead to two points with 2:21 left in the opening stanza. A three-point play and a jumper from Wright countered a Laster jumper, but a late pair of free throws from McHaney cut the lead back to 15-12 at the end of the first frame.

Dresden was able to jump out to a bigger lead in the second frame as eight points from Wright countered a Greenfield tally. However, the ’Jackets answered back with a three-pointer from Jacob Laster sparked a 9-0 run as a jumper from McHaney capped the run and tied the game at 23-23 with 3:16 left in the first half. But, Wright answered with a jumper and Levister added a three-pointer to put the Lions up by five points with just under one minute left in the second quarter. Greenfield responded with five points from McHaney to tie the game with 18 seconds left. However, a three-pointer from Levister put the Lions ahead 31-28 at the end of the first half.

Greenfield's Rhiannon Caudle hit five of six from the line in the fourth quarter to give the Lady ’Jackets a 42-34 victory over the West Carroll Lady War Eagles.

UTM women suffer first home loss

UT-Martin women's basketball suffered its first loss of the season in Skyhawk Arena after being downed by Eastern Kentucky, 55-50. The Lady Colonels' record improves to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Skyhawks fall to 5-4, 1-2 in the OVC.
Sophomore Phyllisha Mitchell recorded her second consecutive and fourth overall double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Freshman Nicole Holman led all scores with 13 points.
The Skyhawks had their opportunities to put the game away early as the Lady Colonels managed to shoot only .154 in the first half, but 22 Skyhawk turnovers kept the Lady Colonels in the game. Tennessee-Martin got on the scoreboard first when Holman drained the first of her three baskets from behind the arc two minutes into the game.
EKU would fight back to take a short-lived lead at 8-6 before Tennessee-Martin went on a 13-0 run. The Skyhawks would eventually take a 10 point advantage into the locker room.
The second half saw the Lady Colonels shoot the ball with much more accuracy, firing 52 percent from the field and 60 percent from three point range. The 10 point halftime lead Tennessee-Martin had was quickly cut in half by the Lady Colonels when Andrea Jenkins and Niki Avery connected on their first shots of the second half.
