Quick change of schedule doesn't hamper Dresden effort
By Jason Peevyhouse

When the storms that ripped through West Tennessee caused the canceling of Dresden’s scrimmage at West Carroll on Friday, the Lions were still able to get some work in, as their scrimmage with Dyer County that was scheduled for Tuesday was moved up.

Dresden’s offense seemed to not be effected much by the quick change of plans. Early in the scrimmage, senior running back Matt Hewett broke free for a long touchdown run, break numerous tackles along the way.

On the Lions’ next offensive series, sophomore quarterback Justin Coleman, only a couple plays after a brutal tackle, found an open Randy Williams for a lengthy scoring strike.

After Dresden’s defense gave up a long touchdown run to Dyer County’s Andre Flowers, Dresden answered right back with a second 50-plus yard touchdown run Hewett.

The Lions will travel back to Newbern this Friday to play in the annual First Look Scrimmage against Ripley at 6 p.m. at Dyer County High School.

Chapman, Burton win Skyhawk summer football challenge

UT-Martin junior running back Donald Chapman’s running prowess is well documented. He’s rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons. He’s a proven competitor.

Chapman teamed with Skyhawk newcomer Jesse Burton, a wide receiver from McComb, Miss., and won the recent Skyhawk Summer Challenge.

The Summer Challenge consisted of 11 events, such as leg curls, wall squat, cone hops, bench press, iron cross, dips, pull ups, 100-pound farmer’s walk for 200 yards, 90-pound sled pull for 200 yards and five-minute tire flip.

The top five teams in each event received points. Five points were awarded for first place, four points for second place, three points for third place and two points for fourth and one point for fifth.

“Our goal was to compete,” said Skyhawk first-year head coach Jason Simpson. “We want to change the culture of this football team. We want them to compete all the time.”

Simpson said the Summer Challenge was an opportunity to test his players’ strength, stamina and endurance.

About 30 players, who were enrolled in the second session of summer school, participate in the one-day challenge on campus.

Skyhawk softball team signs catcher from California

UT-Martin head softball coach Donley Canary received great news when Laurie Lindow announced her intentions to become a Skyhawk.
Lindow comes to UT Martin after a stellar four-year career as catcher for Santana High School in San Diego, Calif.
Lindow capped off a great high school career this past season. She batted .418 while also contributing with four home runs, seven doubles, 26 runs batted in and 25 runs scored.
She earned such honors as Santana High School Team MVP and first-team all-league. Her senior season is the latest chapter in a great career, including more than five years of playing on top club and travel teams in Southern California.
"She is one of the best players I ever coached," said Tom Peronto, Lindow's summer league coach. "
Laurie will bring leadership to the Skyhawks even as a freshman. She will be a great addition on the field and in the dugout."
