Westview 2-0 after thumping Union City 49-10
By Rory Higgins
Sports Writer

The parking lot was packed and so were both sides of the stands Friday night over at Hardy M. Graham stadium in Martin, as longtime inter-county rivals Westview High School and Union City High School faced off once again as they have in past years.
Earning four touchdowns in what became a loss for the Golden Tornadoes, Charger Eric West led his team offensively point-wise and yard-wise in Westview's second game of the season, helping to secure what has now become a 2-0 record thus far.
Despite the point difference by the end of the game, the first quarter started out fairly evenly. The Golden Tornadoes led 3-0 at the end of the period after a 31-yard field goal from Will Arnold at about 6:32.
Following this change in the scoreboard, Westview took up ball control at its own 20-yard line after Union City's kick went into the end zone. From there, West brought the ball down the field several times, including a 29-yard rush straight through the middle on Westview's first down and, a couple plays later, a 19-yard run deeper into Union City's side of the field.
Despite making it to the Union City 21-yard line, Westview got pushed back a bit and was forced to turn over the ball after a fourth down attempt was stopped by a Union City defense that allowed the Chargers no further than their 18-yard line.
With the Union City crowd rallied at this stand, the Chargers turned on their defense as well, with a quarterback keeper stopped by Travis Edwards after only three yards on the first down, an incomplete pass, a stop by Matthew Tucker that pushed UCHS four yards
away from the two yards they were only lacking for a first down.
Forced to punt, the ball went back to Westview as the first quarter winded down, leaving the Chargers to wait to score the second play into the second stanza at 11:18 when West pushed through a final six yards for the touchdown. With the kick no good, WHS was now on top, 6-3.

Dresden falls on road to Obion County Central 21-7
By Jeff Washburn
Editor

Hold on to the ball. That surely is one line that members of the Dresden Lions football team have heard repeatedly from the Dresden coaching staff this week following their 21-14 loss to the Obion County Central Rebels last Friday night.

If there was any key to the Dresden loss, it was turnovers as the Lions had six fumbles during the game to give up possession on five of the miscues. Two of those turnovers came at the Rebel 15-yard line and third at the 23 to bring to an end what appeared to be offensive drives headed for the end zone and points on the scoreboard in each case. The Lions had another fumble at their own 20 which set up a TD march for the Rebels.

If the fumbles weren’t bad enough, Dresden had a 37-yard touchdown jaunt called back on their first offensive series of the game when the Lions were flagged for holding well away from the ball carrier. Two plays later, Dresden turned the ball over on a fumble to end the drive.

Obion Central did not play a flawless game by any means as they had five fumbles to give up possession three times and one pass interception. However, the Rebel miscues did not have as severe of consequences in the final scheme of the game as did those by Dresden. Central likewise was penalized only one time during the game to give up ten yards while the Lions were flagged six times to give up 45 yards.

DMS dominates Lakewood; Greenfield tops MMS

The Dresden Lions, back at full strength after missing five players during their season opening loss to McKenzie, got their first win of the 2006 season in a big way on Thursday night as they dominated the visiting Lakewood Middle School team 28-0.

It did not take long for the Lions to get on the board. Five plays into the game, Gatlin Hatchel broke free along the visitors’ sideline for a 42-yard touchdown run. Will Vernon added the two-point conversion to make the score 8-0 in favor of the Lions.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Lions coverage team stepped up and caused a fumble, which Todd Barton recovered at the Lakewood 7-yard line.

Greenfield Yellowjackets 12

McKenzie Rebels 8

Greenfield picked up its second win of the young season, this one Head Coach Jason Rodehaver calls a “big win for the overall program” as the Yellowjackets rallied to take a 12-8 win over McKenzie on Thursday at Greenfield.

“If we can learn how to fight and scratch for a win at the junior high level, it can carry over to the high school level,” Rodehaver said,

Trailing 8-0, the Yellowjacket defense made a big play as Dalton Potts broke through and blocked a punt. The ball was scooped up by Tyler Jones who returned it for a touchdown to cut the Rebel lead to 8-6.

Greenfield took the lead late in the game as the defense stepped up once again and stopped the bigger Rebel offense.
