Dresden opens 2006
campaign with 37-13 win |
|
Dresden’s Lions had a successful season opener this past
Friday night when they visited the East Robertson
Indians and came home with a 37-13 victory. This week,
Dresden will travel to Obion County Central where they
will take on the Class 3-A Rebels in the opening game of
the season for the Rebels. Game time will be at 7:30
a.m.
The Lions used a balanced offensive attack to overcome
the Indians as Dresden put up a grueling ground attack
by rushing for 318 yards during the game and then adding
another 88 yards through the air. However, the Dresden
defensive unit deserves special credit for limiting
Indian standout quarterback Tico Andrews to 42 yards
rushing and 245 yards passing. Lions fans who witnessed
the 2005 game between Dresden and East Robertson will
recall that it was Andrews who almost single handedly
engineered a second half rally to bring the Indians from
a 24-13 deficit at the half to a 42-27 win over the
Lions. This year was quite different as the Lions
defense limited Andrews ability to scramble out of the
pocket and forced him to put the ball into the air after
shutting down the Indian rushing game. In fact,
Dresden’s defensive unit was responsible for scoring 10
of the 37 points scored by the Lions during the game
this past Friday night.
The Lions were first to put points on the scoreboard
during the game by tackling a Indian running back in the
end zone and scoring two points on the safety. The score
came with 11:37 remaining in the second quarter after a
Dresden punt was downed at the one-yard line. The
Indians elected to try to run the ball on first down and
was met by Dresden’s Brandon Schultek and other members
of an unbendable left defensive line who brought the
back down one-yard deep in the endzone.
The Indians then free kicked the ball to Dresden and the
Lions took over with a first and ten at the East
Robertson 38 yard line where Josh Mitchell had covered
the short kick. On the first play from scrimmage
following the free kick, Dresden scored it’s first
touchdown of the 2006 on a 38 yard run by running back
Clay Adams around the left end with 11:24 remaining in
the second quarter. On the points-after-attempt, Matt
Hewett carried up the center of the line for a two-point
conversion and to give the Lions a 10-0 advantage.

Fulton City Bulldogs hand
Greenfield season opening loss, 30-8 |
By Rory Higgins
Sports Writer |
With
a Fulton City offensive led by Da Ron Williams that kept
pushing until the close of the game and a number of
turnovers on the home team's part, Greenfield suffered a
loss against the invited blue and white Bulldogs Friday
evening.
In the opening quarter of play, neither team gained any
pointwise, but the Fulton lineup kept the ball on the
Greenfield side of the field for the entirety of the
period.
As Greenfield had some trouble early on getting their
offense running smoothly, they were still able to get in
there defensively and stop the Bulldogs short of the end
zone, which the Fulton team pushed within eleven yards
of later in the quarter, before a couple incomplete
passes capped off by a fourth down stop by Robert Jones
to turn the ball over to the ’Jackets.
As the second stanza began, Fulton had the ball at the
Greenfield 28-yard line on a fourth down with about two
yards to go for a first down. Fulton City pushed through
just enough for the first down with Aaron Wilson
carrying the ball, stopped by a joint effort on the
parts of Eric Davidson and Chase McMullen.
From there, Wilson carried the ball to cut the distance
to the end zone in half with a 13-yard rush. After
edging closer towards a touchdown, a holding call and a
stop by McMullen and Kentavis Brent helps push the
Bulldogs back to the 14-yard line.

Charger RB Malik Thomas
suffers neck injury during win |
By Jason Peevyhouse
Sports Editor |
Westview’s win over Camden on Saturday night may be
costly as Westview sophomore running back Malik Thomas
was injured on a second quarter run during the
Chargers’s 7-6 win over Camden at Martin.
Thomas, who carried the ball eight times for 61 yards,
suffered a chipped C1 vertebra and cracked both sides of
his C2 vertebrae. These two vertebrae allow a person to
turn their head from side to side. The C1 vertebra also
connects the skull to the cervical spine.
Instead of performing surgery, doctors at Vanderbilt
Children’s Hospital drilled four pins in Thomas’ skull
to secure a halo and immobilize his head.
By keeping his head completely stable, doctors hope the
damaged vertebrae will fuse together and not require
surgery.
Thomas will have to wait about 10 days before being
evaluated again by doctors and will remain in the halo
for eight weeks.
Thomas will miss the remainder of the 2006 season and
his long-term football future may be in question. |
