Gleason rallies twice over Greenfield |
By Jason Peevyhouse
Sports Editor |
Gleason had all they could handle from the visiting
Greenfield Yellowjackets on Monday for the start of a
home-and-home series with the ’Jackets. It took two big
hits, one in the bottom of the fifth to cap a five-run
comeback and one in the bottom of the seventh to give
the Dawgs a 9-8 win over Greenfield at Gleason.
Gleason was the first to get on the board. A walk to
Brandon Bailey in the bottom of the second inning led to
a two-out single from Jacob Canaday to give the Bulldogs
an early 1-0 lead.
However, that lead did not last long as Greenfield’
offense erupted in the top of the third inning. After
Daniel Ricketts and Brett Perkins led off the inning
with a pair of singles, a walk to Adam Ledezma loaded
the bases with no outs. Aaron Davidson followed with an
RBI single, then Jakob Perkins knocked in two runs on a
single. Colin Medlin then cleared the bases with a
three-run homerun over the left-field fence to make the
score 6-1 in favor of the ’Jackets.
Gleason responded in the bottom of the third inning as
an RBI single from Bailey put the Bulldogs back on the
board. Ethan Lowrance reached on an error to plate
another run and the Dawgs cut the lead in half later in
the inning when another error led to a third Gleason run
to make the score 6-4 in favor of the ’Jackets.
Greenfield got one of those runs back in the top of the
fourth inning as Jakob Perkins got his second RBI single
in as many innings to push the ’Jackets lead to 7-4.
However, Gleason came right back in the bottom of the
fourth inning as a two-run single from Bailey plated
Jacob Howington and Adam Bennett to cut the Greenfield
lead down to one run going into the fifth inning.

South Fulton
escapes Lady Lion upset bid |
By: Jason Peevyhouse
Sports Editor |
After years of falling on hard times to the South Fulton
Devilette softball nine, the Dresden Lady Lions gave the
visitors from near the Kentucky border all they wanted
last Thursday as it took extra innings for the
Devilettes to claim a 2-1 victory in district action at
Dresden.
Dresden threatened right away as Katie McWherter reached
on an error to start the bottom of the first inning.
However, despite stealing two bases, McWherter was
stranded at third base.
After both teams went down in order in the second
inning, South Fulton was able to break the scoreless
tie. Pinion reached on an error to open the inning then
was singled in on a Kaci Beadles single to make the
score 1-0 in favor of the Devilettes.
The Lady Lions again threatened in the bottom half of
the third inning as Katie McWherter got a one-out
single. However, McWherter was caught stealing. Marlee
Mason followed with another single, but was stranded
when a flyball ended the inning.
Dresden was able to retire the side in the South Fulton
half of the fourth inning then went to work to get the
game tied. Lacie Kelley led off the bottom of the fourth
with a double. Kelley then scored on a Megan McWherter
single, running over the catcher and knocking the ball
loose from the tag in the process. Dresden was able to
load the bases, but a force-out at the plate and a popup
ended the Lady Lion offensive attack.

Dresden skid continues with loss to Bradford |
By Rory Higgins
Sports Writer |
As clouds overhead threatened
to end the game prematurely at any moment, the Bradford
Red Devils came up to Dresden for a match against the
Lions on Thursday afternoon. An initial gain from the
Red Devils was eventually equalized later in the game by
the Dresden team, but not before a last-inning point
surge on the part of Bradford to secure the win for the
visiting team, 11-5.
Bradford did not take long in
filling the bases up in the first inning, as a walk
brought home Matthew Wood and a single to right field
from Eric Evans brought both a couple more runners
completely around the bases.
Bradford's top of the first
came to an end with three scores, while Dresden's
portion of the opening inning ended three up and three
down, even though Randy Williams made it on base on a
walk but was tagged out by Clay Hampton on second during
a steal attempt. The other two were struck out by
Bradford's pitcher, Evans.
A change of pitchers brought
Wil Levister to the mound, which helped usher in a
tighter Lions defense that held off the Red Devils from
scoring in the next four innings. However, Bradford also
held off Dresden from scoring in the next four innings
as well, with both sides going three up and three down
several times through the second and fifth innings. In
the sixth, Bradford gained a bit, getting two more runs,
but not before catcher Adam Turbeville tagged out two
runners trying to make it home, preventing two less
scores on the part of the Red Devils.
