Billy Franklyn Mansfield
Billy Franklyn Mansfield, 64, of Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma, died Sunday, August 27, 2006, at St. Anthony
Hospital in Oklahoma City. Funeral services for Mr.
Mansfield were held Thursday, August 31, 2006, at 11:00 a.m.
at Gallimore Funeral Home in Gleason. Burial followed in
Matheny Grove Cemetery. Bro. Jerry Rainbolt officiated the
services.
Mr. Mansfield was a security guard. He was born July
27, 1942 in Dresden. Mr. Mansfield was preceded in death by
his father, Atlas "Beck" Silvester Mansfield.
Mr. Mansfield is survived by two sons, Christopher
Mansfield of McKenzie, and David Mansfield of McKenzie; a
daughter, Tami Maron of Plainsfield, Illinois; his mother,
Ada Adell "Ross" Mansfield; two brothers, Joe Mansfield of
Tullahoma, Tennessee, and Bobby Mansfield of Dresden; three
sisters, Sherry Ross of Greenfield, Jerry Sandbig of Fort
Myers, Florida, and Judy Cody of Madison, Alabama; and six
grandchildren. Evie Mae Barker
Evie Mae Barker, 86, of Paris, died Monday, September
4, 2006, at Henry County Medical Center in Paris. Funeral
services for Mrs. Barker will be held today, Wednesday,
September 6, 2006, at 1:00 p.m. at LeDon Chapel of Ridgeway
Funeral Home in Paris. Burial will follow in Olive Branch
Cemetery in Cottage Grove. Adam Barker and Douglas Nash will
officiate the services.
Mrs. Barker was a member of Hodges Chapel Baptist
Church in Weakley County. She was born May 4, 1920 in
Murray, Kentucky to the late James Ruebin Flowers and Nellie
Mohundro Flowers. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Barker
was also preceded in death by a son, Ralph Barker; two
sisters, Emma Morris and Mildred Kusemoto; and three
brothers, Herman, L.J., and Elisha "Cheatem" Flowers.
Mrs. Barker is survived by her husband, Herman Barker
of Paris; two daughters, Cherry Ann (Tim) Sutton of Sharon,
and Deborah (Terry) James of Gleason; five sons, Gary (Jane)
Barker of Paris, Kerry "Ted" Barker of Paris, Derrell
(Donna) Barker of Paris, Buddy (Cynthia Ann) Barker of
Cottage Grove, and Jack (Melinda) Barker of Palmersville;
grandchildren, Tommy, Mickey, Bridget, Jeffrey, Traci, Adam,
and Matthew Barker, Kimberly Wolf, Brandon Merrell, Jerry
and Brian James, and John and Roger Clendenin; and seventeen
great-grandchildren. Hermine
Christina Browning
Hermine Christine Browning, 63, of Dresden, died
Monday, August 28, 2006, at Douglas Nursing Home in Milan.
Funeral services and burial were held privately.
Mrs. Browning was a bartender. She was born November
24, 1942 in Germany. She was preceded in death by her
husband, John Browning; and her mother, Maria Rastel.
Mrs. Browning is survived by a son, Wesley Hagerty of
Martin; and a daughter, Kathrine Chappell of Martin.
Iva Smethwick
Iva Smethwick, 89, of Dresden, died Sunday, August 27,
2006, at Weakley County Nursing Home in Dresden. Funeral
services for Mrs. Smethwick were held Tuesday, August 29,
2006, at 1:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden.
Burial followed in Matheny Grove Cemetery near Dresden.
Elder Charles DeMoss and Elder Houston Patrick officiated
the services.
Mrs. Smethwick was retired from Bay Bee Shoe Company
and a member of Matheny Grove Primitive Baptist Church near
Dresden. She was a native of Dresden and the daughter of the
late Walter and Daisy Miller Thedford. In addition to her
parents, Mrs. Smethwick was also preceded in death by her
husband, Mr. Gerald Thomas Smethwick.
Mrs. Smethwick is survived by two daughters, Ramona
(James) Jackson of Dresden, and Judith (Junior) Harris of
Palmersville; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren;
and two great-great-grandchildren.
Juanita Overcast Winstead
Juanita Overcast Winstead, 86, of Dresden, died
Thursday, August 31, 2006, at Weakley County Nursing Home in
Dresden. Funeral services for Mrs. Winstead were held
Sunday, September 3, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral
Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in Olive Branch
Cemetery near Como. Bro. Richard Carlson and James F. Key,
Jr. officiated the services.
Mrs. Winstead was a housewife and a member of the
Dresden Church of Christ. She was a native of Como and the
daughter of the late W.F. and Dessie Scott Overcast. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Winstead was also preceded in
death by her husband, Mr. William Loyd Winstead; a sister,
Rosa Judson Key; and a brother, Dan A. Overcast.
Mrs. Winstead is survived by two nieces, Nancy McClure
of Palmersville, and Rosa June Key Schwartz of Cincinnati,
Ohio; and three nephews, James Key of Lebanon, Tennessee,
Alfred Overcast of North Carolina, and Franklin Overcast of
Cincinnati, Ohio. Nellie McGehee
Neblett
Nellie McGehee Neblett, 96, of Martin, died Saturday,
September 2, 2006, at VanAyer Manor Nursing Home in Martin.
Graveside services for Mrs. Neblett were held Tuesday,
September 5, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at Public Wells Cemetery in
Martin. Rev. David Rogers officiated the services.
Mrs. Neblett was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Pelia
Baptist Church. She was born December 6, 1909 in Weakley
County to the late Frank McGehee and Nancy Jane Trevathan
McGehee. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Neblett was also
preceded in death by her husband, Oren Neblett; and a
daughter, Nancy Neblett.
Mrs. Neblett is survived by a nephew, Don McGehee of
Martin. Ruth Woods Barrett McCoy
Ruth Woods Barrett McCoy, 80, of Dresden, died
Saturday, September 2, 2006, at Weakley County Nursing Home
in Dresden. Funeral services for Mrs. McCoy were held
Tuesday, September 5, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at Bowlin Funeral
Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in Sunset Cemetery
in Dresden. Rev. Dan Leslie officiated the services.
Mrs. McCoy was a homemaker and a member of the First
Presbyterian Church in West Memphis, Arkansas. She was also
a member of the Lightmanns Bridge Club in Memphis and a Life
Master Bridge Player. Mrs. McCoy was a native of Greenwood,
Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her father, Lee
Woods, Sr.; her first husband, Paul Barrett, Sr.; a sister,
Irene Birch; and two brothers, Lee Woods, Jr. and Talmadge
Woods.
Mrs. McCoy is survived by her husband, Mr. William
"Bill" McCoy of Dresden; two daughters, Pamela Barrett
(Allen) Strawbridge of Dresden, and Patty Michelle Barrett
of Dresden; a son, Paul Barrett, Jr. (Lisa) of Meridian,
Mississippi; her mother, Mrs. Ruby Woods Guess of Ferradin
Beach, Florida; three grandchildren; and two

Robert Monroe Stafford
Sergeant Major Robert Monroe Stafford, USA Retired, 65,
of Greenfield, died September 1, 2006, at the Volunteer
General Hospital in Martin.
Funeral services were conducted at Williams Funeral
Home on Monday, September 4, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev.
Dennis Beal and Rev. Don Bowlin of Pleasant Grove Baptist
Church officiating. Burial, with full military honors,
followed at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church cemetery, on
Stafford Store Road in Greenfield. Mr. Stafford, a Baptist
in faith, was a life-long member of the Pleasant Grove
Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Smith of Greenfield;
three daughters, Teresa Stafford of Dresden, Betty Stafford
Scott (husband, Dale) of Medina, and Connie Kramer (husband,
Terry) of Richmond Hill, Georgia; five grandchildren,
Jessica Kramer Beasley (husband, Joseph) of Rincon, Georgia,
Johanna Kramer of Los Angeles, California, Jonathon Kramer
of Richmond Hill, Georgia, Starla Scott of Medina, and
Secily Scott of Medina; one great-granddaughter, Camille
Suzanne Beasley of Rincon, Georgia; his mother, Imogene
Dunning Stafford of McKenzie; and one brother, Kenneth
Stafford (wife, Julia) of Greenfield. He also leaves many
brother and sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews.
SGM Stafford was preceded in death by his father, R.J.
Stafford; and three brothers, Randall Stafford, Joe
Stafford, and Harold Edson Stafford.
Robert Stafford was born in Trezevant and raised in the
Stafford Store community in Weakley County. He attended
school in Greenfield before joining the U.S. Army at the age
of seventeen. While dedicated to serving his country for
twenty-three years, SGM Stafford was stationed in Korea,
Vietnam, Berlin, East Germany, Fulda, Bad Hersfeld and
Bamberg, West Germany, Bozeman, Montana, Fort Bragg, North
Carolina, and Fort Knox, Kentucky. He served in the Vietnam
War and the Berlin Crisis.
As an E-9, Sergeant Major Stafford was one of an elite
group of Sergeant Majors to attend the U.S. Army Sergeant
Major Academy in Fort Bliss, Texas. He received numerous
medals and honors including the Good Conduct Medal 6th
Award, Overseas Service Medal, National Defense Service
Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal 4th
Award, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army of
Occupation Medal, Republic of Vietnam Staff Service Medal,
Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, M-16 Expert
Qualification Badge and the Meritorious Service Medal.
Upon retirement from the military in 1981, SGM Stafford
relocated to Greenfield. He worked in the manufacturing
industry, including Greenfield Products Company, where he
retired was Plant Manager. Subsequently, Mr. Stafford worked
as a Clerk in the U.S. Postal Service in Trenton.
