Ercell Smethwick McClain
Ercell Smethwick McClain, 89, of Martin, formerly of
Palmersville, died Monday, March 20, 2006, at Weakley County
Nursing Home in Dresden. Funeral services for Mrs. McClain
were held Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at 1:00 p.m. at Bowlin
Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in Fairview
Cemetery near Palmersville. Bro. Eddie Hutchens officiated
the services.
Mrs. McClain was a teacher's aide and a member of the
Martin Church of Christ. She was a native of Weakley County
and the daughter of the late Herbert Elbert and Cynthia
Brann Smethwick. In addition to her parents, Mrs. McClain
was also preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Seldon Knox
McClain; a brother, Gerald Smethwick; and one grandchild.
Mrs. McClain is survived by a daughter, Janice (Eddie)
Capps of Dresden; a son, Gale (Janice) McClain of Martin;
three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Ethelline Lee Scearce
Ethelline Lee Scearce, 93, of Sharon, died Saturday,
March 18, 2006, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin.
Funeral services for Ms. Scearce were held Tuesday, March
21, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home in Sharon.
Burial followed in Tansil Cemetery in Sharon. Rev. Tommy
Harrison and Rev. Barry Capps officiated the services.
Mrs. Scearce was a retired cook at Volunteer General
Hospital. She was born September 23, 1912 in Weakley County.
Ms. Scearce was preceded in death by three brothers, Dalton
Lee, James Lee, and Everett Lee; and three sisters, Ardell
Cooper, Beulah Mae Morgan, and Clara Belle Hill.
Mrs. Scearce is survived by a son, Danny Scearce of
Dresden; two sisters, Elva Pearl Hawkins of Sharon, and Anza
Rachels of Sharon; and two grandchildren, Robert Scearce of
Dresden and Ryan Scearce of Dresden. Lloyd L.
Griffin
Lloyd L. Griffin, 78, of Greenfield, died Saturday,
March 25, 2006, at McKenzie Regional Hospital in McKenzie.
Funeral services for Mr. Griffin were held Tuesday, March
28, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church in
Greenfield. Burial followed in Chapel Hill Gardens in Oak
Lawn, Illinois. Wayne Perkins and Dwayne Thomas officiated
the services.
Mr. Griffin was a painter and attended Bethel Baptist
Church in Greenfield. He was born January 3, 1928 in
Greenfield to the late Henry Griffin and Mossie Taylor.
Mr. Griffin is survived by a son, Chris Griffin of Hope
Mills, North Carolina; a brother, Williard Griffin of
Dresden; two sisters, Faye Hathcoat of Greenfield, and
Dorothy Yeager of Aurora, Illinois; and one grandchild.
Ludie Montgomery Gaines
Ludie Montgomery Gaines, 84, died Wednesday, March 22,
2006 at Jackson-Madison General Hospital. Funeral services
were conducted Sunday, March 26, 2006 at First United
Methodist Church with Bro. Bill Mullins officiating.
Entombment followed in Carroll Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Gaines, a homemaker, was born March 3, 1922, in
Pinedale, Mississippi, to the late Jodie William and Pearl
Morris Montgomery. She was a member of First United
Methodist Church in McKenzie.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years,
Ben Gaines Sr. She and her husband founded Gaines
Manufacturing Company from their garage in Memphis and
relocated to McKenzie in 1958. They were also involved in
the development of a motel, bowling alley, golf course,
trucking company, Wal-Mart shopping centers and a
restaurant. They were instrumental in a campaign that
brought Bob Hope to Bethel College in 1975, raising more
than $100,000 for the college. The school's six-lane, indoor
heated pool was named "The Ben and Ludie Gaines Pool" in
appreciation of the family's generous contributions. Many
scholarships have been made available by the Gaines family
for students attending Bethel College. The college in May
1997 honored both Ben and Ludie with honorary Doctor of
Humane Letters degrees.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia (Dr. Robert)
Kriebel of Franklin and Jodie (Jeff) Johnson of McKenzie;
one son, Ben Gaines Jr. of Jackson; seven grandchildren,
Scott Kriebel, Jennifer Johnson, Jessica Johnson, Jake
Johnson, John Johnson, Ben Gaines III, and Bailey Gaines;
and special nieces, Sandra Frayser, Rita Nanney, Janet
Whitehead and Wyvone Runyon.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials
be made to Bethel College or First United Methodist Church.
McKenzie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Lyndell McDurmon Thompson
Lyndell McDurmon Thompson, 96, of Dresden, died
Saturday, March 25, 2006, at Weakley County Nursing Home in
Dresden. Graveside services for Mrs. Thompson were held
Sunday, March 26, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at East Side Cemetery
in Martin. Speaking at the service was her granddaughter,
Aprill Lynn Jones.
Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker and a member of Central
Baptist Church. She was born December 31, 1909 in Weakley
County to the late Bill Riley and Arrie Harkey. In addition
to her parents, Mrs. Thompson was also preceded in death by
her husbands, Leonard McDurmon and Arden Thompson; and a
grandson, Joey Wright.
Mrs. Thompson is survived by a son, Doug McDurmon of
Martin; two daughters, Betty Wright of Martin, and Iris Bell
of Martin; seven grandchildren, Michael Wright of
Huntsville, Alabama, Tressa Wright Jacobs of Martin, Aprill
Bell Jones of Charlotte, North Carolina, Jason Bell of
Clarksville, Mark McDurmon of Ft. Lewis, Washington (Iraq),
Pat McDurmon of Ft. Campbell, Kentucky (Iraq), and Jennifer
McDurmon Forsythe of Martin. Martha Harrison Monroe
Martha Harrison Monroe, 83, of Martin, died Monday,
March 20, 2006, at Weakley County Nursing Home in Dresden.
Funeral services for Mrs. Monroe were held Wednesday, March
22, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at Martin Church of Christ. Burial
followed in East Side Cemetery in Martin. Bro. John Forgy
officiated the services.
Mrs. Monroe was retired from Northwest Tennessee
Development District and was Director of Nutrition Program,
Meals-On-Wheels. She was a member of the Martin Church of
Christ. Mrs. Monroe was born January 24, 1923 in Weakley
County to the late Webster Harrison and Hazel Lacewell
Harrison. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Monroe was also
preceded in death by her first husband, Ewing P. Wray.
Mrs. Monroe is survived by her husband, Joe Monroe of
Martin; a son, Steve E. Wray of Martin; a stepson, Doug
Monroe of Martin; a stepdaughter, Linda Nichelson of
Millington; a brother, Wayne Harrison of Houston, Texas; a
sister, Sue Powell of Bradford; and two grandchildren, Adam
Wray and Alex Wray. Vernon B. Bynum
Vernon B. Bynum, 99, of Dresden, died Tuesday, March
21, 2006, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral
services for Mr. Bynum were held Thursday, March 23, 2006,
at 11:00 a.m. at Gallimore Funeral Home Chapel in Gleason.
Burial followed in Sandhill Cemetery. Rev. Roy Auvenshine
officiated the services.
Mr. Bynum was a retired farmer. He was born January 19,
1907 in Gleason to the late J.W. and Ivie Bynum. In addition
to his parents, Mr. Bynum was also preceded in death by his
wife, Golda B. Bynum; a brother, Woodrow Bynum; and a
sister, Cecil McCord.
Mr. Bynum is survived by a son, Bob Bynum of Dresden;
four daughters, Pat Bynum of Dresden, Judy Cleek of Dresden,
Shirley Byers of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and Vivian Spence
of Austin, Texas; five grandchildren; and seven
great-grandchildren.
