Booker Maurice Smith
Booker Maurice Smith, 84, of Dresden, died Tuesday,
January 17, 2006, at his home. Funeral services for Mr.
Smith were held Thursday, January 19, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at
Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in
Woodlawn Cemetery in Sharon. Rev. Paul Williams officiated
the services.
Mr. Smith was a Bookkeeper for Whalley Construction Co.
and was a veteran of WWII serving in the Army Air Corp. He
was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dresden, former
deacon of Woodland Baptist Church in Jackson, Tennessee, and
a member of the VFW Post 1840. Mr. Smith was a native of
Gibson County and the son of the late Ernest and Etta May
Thedford Smith.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mrs.
Katie Lou Swearingen Smith of Dresden; and several nieces
and nephews.
Edna Parks Sinclair
Edna Parks Sinclair, 89, of Key Biscayne, Florida, died
Sunday, January 1, 2006. She was the daughter of the late
Obe and Agnes Collins Parks and was born and reared in
Gleason, where her teaching career began.
Mrs. Sinclair was a longtime resident of Key Biscayne,
Florida, one of the first teachers at Key Biscayne
Elementary School, and a charter member of Key Biscayne
Community Church.
She is survived by daughters, Mary Gail S. PY (Arthur,
Jr.) and Carol S. Robles (Joseph, Jr.); and five
grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, January 7, 2006, at
Key Biscayne Community Church.
Georgia Barner Mitchell
Georgia Barner Mitchell, 81, of Martin, died Wednesday,
January 18, 2006, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mitchell were held Friday, January
20, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin.
Burial followed in Rutherford Cemetery in Rutherford. Elder
Houston Patrick officiated the services.
Mrs. Mitchell was retired from Food Services at
Volunteer General Hospital. She was also a member of the
Baptist Church. Mrs. Mitchell was born April 16, 1924 in
Kenton to the late Fairham Barner and Dora King Barner. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Mitchell was also preceded in
death by her husband, Mr. Robert Mitchell.
Mrs. Mitchell is survived by a son, Tommy Mitchell of
Springville, Tennessee; a grandchild, Lisa Smith of Dresden;
a great-grandchild, Cassandra Smith of Dresden; and a
step-great-grandchild, Chad Smith of Dresden.
Nancy Marie Hammond
Nancy Marie Hammond, 68, of Union City, died Thursday,
January 19, 2006, at Jackson Regional Hospital in Jackson.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hammond were held Saturday,
January 21, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at White-Ranson Funeral Home
in Union City. Burial followed in Obion County Memorial
Gardens in Union City. Bro. Jerry Leggett officiated the
services.
Mrs. Hammond was a homemaker and a member of the First
Presbyterian Church in Union City. She was born February 17,
1937 in Madison County, Tennessee to the late Ed Lewis
Freeman and Willie (Vestel) Freeman.
Mrs. Hammond is survived by her husband, James Carl
Hammond of Union City; a daughter, Cindy Fagan of
Tiptonville, Tennessee; a son, Carl Wayne Hammond of Union
City; four grandchildren, Andrew Vaughan of Mobile, Alabama,
Adam Vaughan of Dresden, Mason Hammond of Union City, and
Aubrey Hammond of Union City; and two great-grandchildren,
Haley Vaughan of Mobile, Alabama, and Dylan Vaughan of
Mobile, Alabama.
Robert Wayne (Bobby) Hauhe
Robert Wayne (Bobby) Hauhe, 49, of Martin, died Friday,
January 20, 2006, at his home. Funeral services for Mr.
Hauhe were held Sunday, January 22, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at
Murphy Funeral Home in Martin. Burial followed in Gardner
Cemetery. Rev. Phil Mitchell officiated the services.
Mr. Hauhe was a contractor/carpenter and was a graduate
of Westview High School. He was born August 10, 1956 in
Chicago, Illinois. He was preceded in death by her mother,
Geraldine Capps Hauhe.
Mr. Hauhe is survived by his wife, Mrs. Paula Smith
Hauhe of Martin; two daughters, Christin Hauhe of Martin,
and Robin Hauhe of Martin; four brothers, Charles (Chuck)
Hauhe of Martin, David Hauhe of Martin, Doug Hauhe of
Martin, and Mike (Flip) Hauhe of Martin; and a sister, Donna
Bell of Martin.
William Russell "Pete" Crawford
William Russell "Pete" Crawford, 65, of Springville,
Tennessee, died Tuesday, January 17, 2006, at Henry County
Medical Center in Paris. Funeral services for Mr. Crawford
were held Thursday, January 19, 2006, at 1:00 p.m. at LeDon
Chapel of Ridgeway Funeral Home in Paris. Burial followed in
Walker Cemetery in Paris. Larry Williams officiated the
services.
Mr. Crawford worked for Roadway Express for several
years and was a member of the Teamsters and the Church of
Christ. He was born July 13, 1940 in Nashville. He was
preceded in death by his father, James Denver Crawford; and
his first wife, Blanche Holt Crawford, who died October
1973.
Mr. Crawford is survived by his wife, Sherry Nichols
Crawford of Springville, Tennessee; his mother, LaRue
Simpson Crawford of Martin; two daughters, Pattie (Tracye)
Nutting of McKenzie, and Vonda Stewart and special friend
Steve Cantrell of McKenzie; a stepson, Andy Jackson and
fiancé Sandra Norton of Puryear; three sisters, Elaine
Martin of Paris, Cherri Williams of Jefferson City,
Missouri, and Katrina Cobb of Martin; a brother, James
Crawford of Martin; and three grandchildren, James Russell
Washburn, Ashley Marie Stewart, and Gabrielle Elizabeth
Nutting.
Charlie Rawls
Charlie Rawls, 59, of McKenzie, died Friday, January
20, 2006, at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
Funeral services for Mr. Rawls were held Monday, January 23,
2006, at 11:00 a.m. at LeDon Chapel of Ridgeway Funeral Home
in Paris. Burial followed in Brocks Cemetery in Greenfield.
Jerry Drye officiated the services.
Mr. Rawls was a self-employed carpenter and a veteran
of the United States Navy serving 2 tours in Vietnam. He was
born November 6, 1946 in Como to the late James Leonard
"Pod" Rawls and Lottie Bell Crawford Rawls. In addition to
his parents, Mr. Rawls was also preceded in death by a
brother, Jerry Rawls, who died in 1969 in Vietnam.
Mr. Rawls is survived by his wife, Kathy Weaver Rawls
of McKenzie; a daughter, Jennifer Rawls of McKenzie; three
sisters, Sue (Charles) Turpen of Clarksville, Tennessee,
Betty (Bob) Jackson of New Port Richie, Florida, and Joy
(Lowell) Brisendine of Paris; two brothers, Kenneth (Denise)
Rawls of Paris, and Mark (Tina) Rawls of Paris; his
mother-in-law, Thelma Weaver Heath of Greenfield; and
several nieces and nephews.
Emma Nell Hall
Emma Nell Hall, 58, of Dyer, died Monday, January 23,
2006, at Trenton Health Care. Funeral services for Ms. Hall
will be held today, Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at 2:00
p.m. at Karnes & Son Funeral Chapel in Dyer. Burial will
follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Dyer. Rev. Tim Sanderson will
officiate the services.
Ms. Hall was an Avon Representative and Plasteck. She
was a member of Dyer First Baptist Church.
Ms. Hall is survived by two sons, Cletus Counts, Jr. of
Potts Camp, Mississippi, and Tommy Hall of St. Louis,
Missouri; two daughters, Shelley Milligan of Memphis, and
Carla Lawson of Dyer; her parents, Phillip J. and Christine
Upchurch of Dresden; a brother, Thomas J. Upchurch of Hazel,
Kentucky; and three sisters, Joyce Robertson of McKenzie,
Mary Jane Upchurch of Martin, and Paula Jean Stofleth of
Dresden.
James Louis Vowell
James Louis Vowell, 81, of Sharon, died Friday, January
13, 2006, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral
services for Mr. Vowell were held Monday, January 16, 2006,
at 2:00 p.m. at Sharon Methodist Church. Burial followed in
Campground Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Harold Stricker, Rev.
Tim Brown, and Kathryn Douglas officiated the services.
Mr. Vowell was a self-employed painter and a veteran of
WWII serving in the United States Navy. He was also a member
of the American Legion. Mr. Vowell was born September 27,
1924 in Weakley County. He was preceded in death by a
daughter, Linda Cantrell; a brother, A.J. Vowell; and two
sisters, Frances Darnell and Arvina Vowell.
Mr. Vowell is survived by his wife, Margaret Vowell of
Sharon; a daughter, Kay Douglas of Huntingdon; three
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Odella Adams
Odella Adams, 88, of Dresden, died Friday, January 13,
2006, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral
services for Ms. Adams were held Saturday, January 21, 2006,
at 1:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Greenfield. Burial
followed in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Milan. Al Seward
officiated the services.
Ms. Adams worked as a Surgeon Assistant at Miami Valley
Hospital. She was born March 13, 1917 in Trenton to the late
Percy Wright and Hallie Coley.
Ms. Adams is survived by a sister, Leona Willingham of
Dayton, Ohio; and a nephew, Chas Browning of Ontario,
California.
Roger Keith Norvell
Funeral services for Mr. Roger Keith Norvell, age 40,
of Trenton, were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 17,
2006, at Gibson County High School. Burial followed in
Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Norvell, employed by the Gibson County Sheriff's
Department, died Saturday, January 14, 2006, at Gibson
General Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Sherry Norvell of Trenton;
two children, Drew Norvell and Joey Norvell; his mother,
Shirley Norvell of Trenton; grandfather, Louis Riggs of
Dresden; two brothers, Robert Norvell and John Norvell, both
of Trenton; and one sister, Janet Turbeville of Dresden.
Mr. Norvell was a member of the Springhill Volunteer
Fire Department. He served as Gibson County School District
S.R.O. (School Resource Officer) and D.A.R.E. instructor; he
also was a bookkeeper and announcer for the Gibson County
High School basketball program for some 20 years.
