Doris D. Stafford
Doris D. Stafford, 74, of Dresden, died Monday, July
31, 2006, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral
services for Ms. Stafford were held Wednesday, August 2,
2006, at 3:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden.
Burial followed in West Union Cemetery in Dresden. Bro. Tony
Terrell officiated the services.
Ms. Stafford was born in Weakley County to the late
J.C. and Thelma Chappell Stafford. She attended West Union
Baptist Church and was a member of the Dresden American
Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She was also the Activities
Assistant at Weakley County Nursing Home. In addition to her
parents, Ms. Stafford was also preceded in death by her
nephew, Craig Stafford; and a brother, Joe M. Stafford.
Ms. Stafford is survived by a nephew, Mark (Cris)
Stafford of Gleason. Dorothy Ann
Mosley
Dorothy Ann Mosley, 74, of Sharon, died Wednesday, July
26, 2006, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral
services for Mrs. Mosley were held Saturday, July 29, 2006,
at 1:00 p.m. at White-Ranson Funeral Home, Inc. in Union
City. Burial followed in Cane Creek Cemetery. Rev. James
Kinsey officiated the services.
Mrs. Mosley was born June 18, 1932 in Weakley County to
the late Robert Henry Baker and Liza Pearl (Murray) Baker.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Mosley was also preceded in
death by her husband, William Harold Mosley; a daughter,
Mary Pearl Mosley; a brother; and a sister.
Mrs. Mosley is survived by two sons, William Arthur
Mosley of Drummonds, Tennessee, and William Henry Mosley of
Sharon; a daughter, Diane Aldridge of Dresden; a sister,
Margaret Frazier of Sidonia; seven grandchildren; thirteen
great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Douglas Allen Sherlock
Douglas Allen Sherlock, 56, of Martin, died Friday,
August 4, 2006, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin.
Services will be private at a later date.
Mr. Sherlock was born April 18, 1950 in Detroit,
Michigan to the late John Sherlock and Iris Irene Rhodes
Sherlock. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sherlock was also
preceded in death by three half-sisters, Iris Sherlock,
Virginia Sherlock, and Sandra Sherlock; and a half-brother,
David Sherlock.
Mr. Sherlock is survived by a daughter, DeSean Harris
of Martin; a sister, Victoria Kalfas of Mooresville,
Indiana; and two grandchildren. John
David Stroud
John David Stroud, 84, of Huntsville, formerly of
Greenfield, died Sunday.
Mr. Stroud was a World War II Army Air Corp veteran. He
began his career at Redstone Arsenal with the Army Ballistic
Missile Agency "ABMA" in 1951. He initially worked in the
test laboratory and subsequently transferred to the guidance
and control laboratory of ABMA. In the '50s, he served as
deputy chief of the organization responsible for the design
and development of electrical systems for the Redstone,
Jupiter, Pershing and Saturn launch vehicles.
In 1960, when Marshall Space Flight Center was formed,
he transferred to NASA and was assigned to the astrionics
laboratory and later to the systems analysis and integration
lab. He continued work in the area of electrical systems and
systems engineering. During his career with NASA, Mr. Stroud
worked on the Saturn-Apollo, Skylab, shuttle and Spacelab
programs. He retired from NASA in 1979.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine Moseley Stroud;
sons, Joseph David Stroud and Thomas Donald Stroud;
daughters, Sybil Bullington and husband, Barry, and Nancy
Beason and husband, Brent, all of Huntsville; brother,
William Donald Stroud; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral service was held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at
First Presbyterian Church with Dr. William Cockrill and
Pastor Rosemary McMahan officiating. Burial followed in
Maple Hill Cemetery. Lilamae Stearns
Reynolds
Lilamae Stearns Reynolds, 84, of Palmersville, died
Thursday, August 3, 2006, at Volunteer Community Hospital in
Martin. Funeral services for Mrs. Reynolds were held Monday,
August 7, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel
in Dresden. Burial followed in Wesley Chapel Cemetery near
Dresden. Bro. Kenneth Williams officiated the services.
Mrs. Reynolds was a machinist for National Lock Company
was a Lutheran by faith. She was a native of Merrill,
Wisconsin and the daughter of the late Harry E. and Adale
Radchke Stearns. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Reynolds
was also preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Boyd
Reynolds; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Reynolds is survived by two daughters, Jeannie
Kisling of Palmersville, and Judy Lee Battig of Rockford,
Illinois; a son, Roy W. Vickery of College Park, Maryland;
two sisters, Lois Jerovice of Merrill, Wisconsin, and Pat
Sargent of Madison, Wisconsin; eight grandchildren; ten
great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Mamie Sue Shaw
Mamie Sue Shaw, 89, of Gleason, died Monday, July 31,
2006, at McKenzie Regional Hospital. Funeral services for
Mr. Shaw were held Thursday, August 3, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at
Gallimore Funeral Home in Gleason. Burial followed in New
Hope Cemetery in Gleason. Bro. Earnest Pounds officiated the
services.
Mrs. Shaw was a retired H.I.S Inspector and a member of
the Gleason Church of Christ. She was born March 31, 1917 in
Gleason to the late Cleveland Louis and Maggie (Hedge)
Maynard. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Shaw was also
preceded in death by her husband, John Mitchell Shaw; and a
son, Ronnie Shaw.
Mrs. Shaw is survived by two sons, Larry Dean Shaw of
Milan, and Jimmy Shaw of Martin; a sister, Dell Taylor of
Gleason; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Margaret A. "Peggy" Kline
Margaret A. "Peggy" Kline, 61, of Elgin, Illinois, died
Tuesday, December 13, 2005, at her home. She was born in
Saint Louis, Missouri, on June 17, 1944. She was the
daughter of Allen B. and Alice (Sites) Simpson.
Ms. Kline attended Elmhurst College and earned her
Bachelors Degree in 1966. She earned a Masters Degree in
Speech Language from Northern Illinois University in 1971.
She worked as a Speech and Language Pathologist. Ms. Kline
was in private practice for one year before working for
Elgin School District U-46 for one year. After leaving
School District U-46, she began her career at the Elgin
Mental Health Center and was employed there for 37 years.
She retired in 2003. Ms. Kline was a member of the First
Baptist Church of Elgin and was an active member and past
president of the Illinois Speech and Hearing Association.
Ms. Kline is survived by her long time friend and
companion, James Tilly of Pingree Grove; her sisters,
Barbara (David) O'Malley of Nipomo, California, and Lucinda
(Mike) Wilson of Eldon, Missouri; her brother, Allen B.
(Sandy) Simpson of Queen Creek, Arizona; a nephew, Anthony
Allen (Darla) Simpson; and several grand-nephews and
grand-nieces.
Ms. Kline was preceded in death by her parents; and her
husband, Dale W. Kline in 1993.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 19, 2005
at 1:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in Elgin. The Rev.
Eric Reed officiated. Graveside memorial services were held
in West Union Cemetery in Dresden on Saturday, August 4,
2006, at 11:00 a.m.
Mozella Morgan Covington
Mozella Morgan Covington, 91, of Gleason, died
Thursday, August 3, 2006, at McKenzie Regional Hospital.
Graveside services for Mrs. Covington were held at West
Union Cemetery. Rev. Gene Price officiated the services.
Mrs. Covington was a retired factory worker. She was
born April 10, 1915 in Dresden to the late Ellis and Flora (Stallcup)
Morgan. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Covington was also
preceded in death by her husband, Jack Covington.
Mrs. Covington is survived by a daughter, Mable Griffin
of McKenzie; ten grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren. Patti Sue
Vowell Cate
Patti Sue Vowell Cate of Martin, 80, homemaker and
retired secretary, died early Sunday morning, August 6,
2006, at VanAyer Manor Nursing Home in Martin.
The daughter of the late Morris A. Vowell, Senior and
Mary Sue Addington Vowell, she was born in Martin on March
17, 1926. She graduated from Martin High School in 1944 and
attended the University of Texas and University of Tennessee
Junior College.
After marrying Billy F. Cate in 1948, her family lived
in several states as well as three tours in Germany while
her husband served in the U.S. Air Force. After her
husband's retirement in 1968, they returned to Martin. As a
life-long member of the First United Methodist Church, she
was active in her church, teaching kindergarten Sunday
school for many years.
Entering the work force late in life, she worked at UT
Martin from 1978 to 2000 as a secretary for several
departments. Her most notable responsibilities included
working as the GED examiner and in the administration of
Kids' College from its inception.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Billy F.
Cate of Martin; son, Bill (Carol) of Marion, Arkansas;
daughter, Cathy Cate of Martin; granddaughter, Sarah Cate of
Memphis; grandson, Wesley Cate of Aurora, Colorado;
sisters-in-law, Mary Kelly Vowell of Martin and Jacqueline
Dann Vowell of Wilbur-by-the-Sea, Florida; nieces and
nephews, David Vowell, Richard Vowell, Steve Vowell, Vickie
Vowell Vincent, all of Martin; Carolyn Vowell Williams of
Nashville; Donald Vowell of Knoxville; and Ronald Cate of
St. Augustine, Florida.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death
by her brothers, Morris A. Vowell and John M. Vowell.
An 11:00 a.m. memorial service will be held at First
United Methodist Church, Martin, on Wednesday, August 9,
2006.
Memorials may be made to the Martin First United Methodist
Church building fund or Community Developmental Services.
